“Tralcetto” Pecorino d’Abruzzo DOC 2024
This white grape variety still unjustly leads a shadowy existence, yet it has so much fun and seriousness to offer: a fine, fresh bouquet of peach, quince and almond. Firmly built on the palate, with multi-layered primary fruit and beautifully integrated, lively acidity. A wonderfully sensitive accompaniment to light summer dishes, also ideal with bread and olives under an awning in the unexpected summer rain. SUPERIORE.DE

“Tralcetto” Pecorino Abruzzo IGT 2025
A grape variety like a phoenix rising from the ashes: Pecorino was considered almost extinct until the 1980s, displaced by higher-yielding varieties. Then it was rediscovered – and today this ancient Abruzzese grape is experiencing a spectacular renaissance. According to legend, it owes its name to the sheep (pecora), which loved to nibble on the sweet berries as they travelled through the vineyards. At Zaccagnini, pecorino grows on clayey soils in the provinces of Pescara and Chieti. The harvest at the end of August – later than for Trebbiano and Pinot Grigio – gives the wine its characteristic structure. After cryomaceration and gentle vacuum pressing, the must ferments at a low temperature in stainless steel.

!["Tralcetto Il Bianco di Ciccio" Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC 2025]()
“Tralcetto Il Bianco di Ciccio” Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC 2025
The small vine wood on the neck of the bottle tells a story: In Bolognano, the small village in the province of Pescara where Zaccagnini has been making wine since 1978, the local women tie each Tralcetto to the bottle by hand with raffia. A symbol of the connection with the land that has long since become a trademark. The Bianco di Ciccio comes from vineyards on clayey soils, where the vines grow partly on the classic pergola and partly on a trellis. An early harvest at the beginning of August preserves the lively acidity. After gentle vacuum pressing and cold clarification, only the fine must fraction ferments at a controlled low temperature – a process that maximises freshness and aroma.

!["Tralcetto" Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC 2025]()
“Tralcetto” Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2025
Cerasuolo is not a rosé – at least not in the fashionable sense. It is an independent type of wine with its own DOC since 2010, deeply rooted in Abruzzo's wine culture. The name is derived from cerasa, the dialect word for cherry, and describes the characteristic colour that has accompanied the region's tables for centuries. Zaccagnini's Tralcetto is a lesson in what Montepulciano can do without prolonged contact with the skins: The grapes are gently pressed and only the must is fermented at a low temperature – at a low temperature to preserve the fruit. Brief ageing in stainless steel, then into the bottle.

!["Tralcetto" Pinot Grigio Terre d'Abruzzo IGT 2025]()
“Tralcetto” Pinot Grigio Terre d’Abruzzo IGT 2025
Pinot Grigio from Abruzzo? Yes, and how. What often degenerates into a neutral mass-produced wine in Veneto or Friuli gains character in the hills of Chieti. The clayey soils and the combination of Adriatic breezes and Apennine coolness give the international grape variety a freshness and flavour that you will look for in vain elsewhere. The grapes are harvested early in the first half of August to preserve acidity and flavour. After gentle vacuum pressing, only the pre-fermentation must ferments at a low temperature. A short period on the lees gives the wine additional texture and depth before it is matured in stainless steel.

!["Tralcetto" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2023]()
“Tralcetto” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2023
The small vine wood on the neck of the bottle is more than just a nice gesture – it is the trademark of Zaccagnini and symbolises a philosophy: nothing from the vineyard is wasted, even the pruning finds its place. Since 1978, the Zaccagnini family has been working in Bolognano, deep in the mountainous hinterland of the province of Pescara, where the vineyards lie like an amphitheatre, protected by snow-capped mountains. Here, where fresh winds blow daily through a mountain gorge, the Montepulciano grape thrives in ideal conditions. After gentle manual harvesting and temperature-controlled maceration, the wine matures for six months in Slavonian oak barrels before finding its final harmony in the bottle for a further three months.

“Chronicon” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2022
Chronicon – the name sounds like history, and that is exactly what this wine delivers: a chronicle of what Montepulciano is capable of in the hills of Bolognano. The vines grow around the estate, overlooking the Majella National Park, on clayey soils with a westerly exposure. The grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September, followed by a good two weeks of maceration at a controlled temperature – long enough to extract colour, structure and the typical varietal fruit. Ageing in oak barrels for six to nine months gives the wine a polished finish without over-moulding it.

!["San Clemente" Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC 2024]()
“San Clemente” Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC 2024
Trebbiano can be more than just a fresh summer wine – as Zaccagnini's San Clemente has been proving for years. Named after the Romanesque abbey of San Clemente a Casauria, a national monument in the heart of the Valle Casauria, this wine is a commitment to the depth of an often underestimated grape variety. The grapes come from old vines on clayey soils with a south-westerly exposure, where the constant ventilation between the Apennines and the Adriatic ensures perfect ripeness. The grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September, beginning of October – later than Tralcetto, riper and more concentrated. The actual transformation begins in the cellar: 14 days of maceration at a cool 14-16°C extract texture and complexity without sacrificing freshness. The wine then matures for six months in untoasted barriques – the wood provides structure, not flavour.

“San Clemente” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Terre di Casauria Riserva DOC 2019
In the top "San Clemente" line, Zaccagnini takes Montepulciano from Abruzzo to a new level - towards origin, depth and maturity. The 2019 Riserva comes from the Terre di Casauria DOC area, one of the most characterful zones in the region, located between the Majella massif and the Adriatic coast. The vineyards there are located on calcareous and clayey slopes with good drainage and ideal exposure - a terroir that gives the Montepulciano structure, density and balance. The 2019 vintage was selectively harvested, fermented on the skins at a controlled temperature and then matured for around 24 months in a combination of barriques and large wooden barrels. The use of wood remains discreet, accompanying but not dominating.

From Bolognano to the world
In 1978, Ciccio Zaccagnini founded a winery in the small town of Bolognano in Abruzzo, which from the very beginning wanted to do more than just produce wine. Inspired by his passion for art, culture and tradition, he merged agriculture with aesthetics and moulded the winery into one of the most important symbols of modern viticulture in central Italy. The credo "Wine, the art of man" is not only written on the label, but has become the life motto of a house that is now recognised worldwide.
It all began in 1984 with the presentation of a project by the world-famous Düsseldorf artist and art theorist Joseph Beuys. It was entitled "Difesa della Natura" (Defence of Nature). This already says a lot about the philosophy of this great winery, which has always been an integral part of the Abruzzo wine world.
Departure and transition
What began as an ambitious family project developed into one of the leading wineries in Abruzzo under the management of son Marcello Zaccagnini. With around 300 hectares of vineyards and an annual production of around three million bottles, Zaccagnini set standards for quality, continuity and branding. A significant step followed in 2022: the majority of the Zaccagnini winery was sold to the holding company Argea, a merger of major Italian wine brands led by the private equity fund Clessidra. Marcello Zaccagnini retains a 20% stake in his life's work. The family also retained around 60 hectares of the vineyards in its own ownership. The winery is ideally equipped for the future: Marcello remains a brand ambassador and strategic partner. Together with his children, who are also active in the company, he forms an important link between tradition and the future.
Between the Apennines and the Adriatic
The vineyards around Bolognano are situated in a privileged location at the foot of the Majella massif, in the immediate vicinity of the national park. Here, continental freshness from the mountains meets mild Adriatic influences, a microclimate that particularly favours autochthonous grape varieties. The vineyards are spread over a wide range of altitudes and soils and offer ideal conditions for varieties such as Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino and Passerina. Sustainability, greening, minimal intervention in the vineyard and careful use of resources are firmly anchored in the business model.
Diversity with a clear signature
Zaccagnini's portfolio is broadly diversified, but thoughtfully structured. At its heart is the internationally renowned Il Tralcetto line, recognisable by the small piece of vine on the neck of the bottle, which has become an icon. The San Clemente line stands for long-lasting, characterful wines with depth and concentration. Chronicon offers modern interpretations of classic grape varieties with a high drinking flow and terroir reference. The Selections line focuses on single-vineyard and speciality bottlings, while Aster stands for freshness, accessibility and suitability for everyday drinking. Clematis is a rare dessert wine made from dried Montepulciano, a meditative sweet wine with expression and structure. The range is complemented by the Le Terre dell'Abate line. Despite the diversity of the portfolio, the house's signature remains clear: regional grape varieties, fine fruit, drinking pleasure and authenticity.
A story bound in vines
The famous Tralcetto tie on the neck of the bottle was originally a spontaneous idea, a tactile symbol of the vineyard's origin. However, its success soon outgrew the capacity of the hard-working hands in the village. The Zaccagnini family then had a machine developed that attaches the small pieces of grapevine by hand with the same care as in the past, keeping a small piece of craftsmanship alive in modern times. "From the vine to the glass – without nuances and with a lot of soul", says Marcello Zaccagnini, summarising the philosophy of his company. A phrase that not only unites the past and the future, but also perfectly describes the essence of Zaccagnini wines. SUPERIORE.DE
"From the precisely defined base wines to the sophisticated Montepulciano single-vineyard wines, all the wines are powerful and impressively manage to combine their typical Abruzzese character with international flavour." Gambero Rosso
