“Bagnara” Fiano del Salento IGP 2025
Bagnara is a village between Cellino San Marco and Campi Salentina. Limestone hills, Mediterranean scrub, figs, olive groves, the wind from the Adriatic Sea. Here, along the old "Limite dei Greci" – the historical borderline of the Greek colonies in Apulia – grows the Fiano of Due Palme. A grape variety with a long history in Salento, already known at the time of Frederick II. Hand-picked, cold maceration at 4°C for 24 hours, temperature-controlled fermentation in steel. Straw yellow in the glass, fresh. The nose opens with citrus, white peach, a hint of almond and Mediterranean herbal spice. Lively on the palate, with good acidity and a long, salty, mineral finish. “Genius Loci” Fiano del Sannio DOP 2025
"Genius loci" – the spirit of the place. Not a name that advertises modestly. But the Fiano vines of the Famiglia Iacobucci on the clay-limestone slopes of Guardia Sanframondi actually deliver what is promised: a clearly territorial interpretation of a grape variety that defines Campania like no other. Steel tank, sur lie, no wood intervention. Pale golden yellow in colour. Ripe peach, vanilla, almond, a hint of hazelnut, subtle saline note on the finish. Fuller than the Aurora, with a glyceric texture that warms the sip. Fresh and round at the same time. SUPERIORE.DE

Medium straw yellow with golden reflections. The bouquet is multi-layered: ripe apricot, candied lemon, hazelnut, white flowers and a hint of honey, underpinned by mineral notes. !["Campanaro" Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOC 2023]()
“Campanaro” Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOC 2023
Since the 2022 vintage, Campanaro has proudly carried the designation Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOCG – a step that takes the years of work on this wine to a new dimension. What began as Irpinia Bianco DOC with a Fiano-Greco cuvée is now a single-varietal Fiano from the best vineyards in the DOCG zone. Feudi di San Gregorio has thus made a clear decision: The Campanaro should show the potential of a single, great Campanian grape variety, not the harmony of two grapes. Vinification takes place in tonneau, where the must ferments at a controlled temperature and then matures for six months on the fine lees. This time in small wooden barrels gives the wine the texture and complexity that distinguishes it from simpler Fiano versions. The fine lees are stirred regularly to develop a creamy fullness without masking the typical freshness of Fiano. After bottling, the Campanaro is left to mature in the bottle for a few months before being released onto the market – patience as part of the Riserva philosophy.

Famous, single-varietal Fiano from calcareous, clayey-sandy soils in the Contrada Dispensa near Menfi. Bright straw yellow in colour with a greenish tinge. The bouquet is complex and full of finesse: white flowers, Williams pear, ripe citrus fruit and a hint of exotic notes such as passion fruit and guava, underpinned by a salty, almost chalky nuance. Silky and broad on the palate, with polished fruit, lively acidity and a cool minerality. The texture appears creamy, but remains clearly contoured and convincingly expresses its origin. Cometa impressively demonstrates that Fiano can shine not only in Campania: Planeta moulds it into one of the most distinctive white wines in Sicily – confident, independent and stylistically unmistakable. “Exultet” Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2024
Exultet – the Latin imperative that has been resounding in the churches of Campania for centuries: "Rejoice!" This name encapsulates the entire philosophy of Luigi Moio, one of Italy's most renowned Oenologist, who has recognised that great wines not only need technical perfection, but above all a soul that moves people to rejoice. If the professor transforms his science into poetry, then Exultet is the most shining example of this alchemy. In the volcanic hills of Mirabella Eclano, where the Via Appia once led Roman legions through the heart of Irpinia, Fiano thrives on soils that owe their origin to the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. This ancient connection between fire and earth characterises every drop of this exceptional white wine.

“Bocca di Lupo” Fiano Puglia IGT 2023 (BIO)
A white wine that challenges everything you think you know about Puglia. While the region is known for powerful red wines from Primitivo and Negroamaro, this Fiano shows that great whites can also be produced here – perhaps even the best in the entire region. The organically cultivated vines are rooted in the barren limestone tufa soils of Tenuta Bocca di Lupo near Minervino Murge, at an altitude of 250-300 metres in the heart of the wild Murgia. Harsh winters, striking day-night fluctuations and the proximity to the extinct volcano Vulture characterise a terroir that produces white wines of rare minerality. The grapes are gently destemmed and pressed. The must rests for 24-48 hours at 10 °C for natural clarification before fermentation begins in stainless steel and is completed in French tonneaux. There the wine matures on the fine lees, followed by further bottle ageing.

Piante a Lapio is a rich and complex white wine produced in small quantities (about 3,000 bottles per vintage) from the grapes of a single vineyard parcel of just under one hectare in the municipality of Boschi in Lapio (AV). It consists of 35-40 year old vines planted on stratified and complex calcareous soils with basaltic subsoil at an altitude of about 550 metres. The vineyard is protected at the back by a namesake forest, which contributes to the vineyard's special microclimatic conditions. Here, in the heart of Irpinia, white wines are produced with great freshness and good acidity levels, which, vinified with the necessary care, can age for over 20 years.

Fiano is one of the oldest autochthonous white grape varieties in Italy. It is mainly found in the southern Italian region of Campania. Probably cultivated by the Romans, it was widespread and very popular from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. After the phylloxera disaster, international varieties such as Chardonnay or the easily cultivated Trebbiano varieties were preferred in many areas. Autochthonous grape varieties largely died out. So did the Fiano.
In the 1970s a return to the past began and it is thanks to Antonio Mastroberardino that the variety was saved. The Mastroberardino winery invested a lot in research. In cooperation with universities and grape nurseries, other old grape varieties such as Greco di Tufo, Falanghina, Piedirosso, Aglianico or Coda di Volpe have been successfully recultivated over the years. In 1990, there were no more than 500 hectares of Fiano in the whole of Italy, now there are more than three times as many, with a strong upward trend, very pleasing.
The relatively late ripening Fiano grape produces aromatic, spicy white wines with a peach and grape aroma reminiscent of Muscat, often with a delicate honey and nut bouquet. When properly matured, they have a long shelf life. If you happen to have read in Wikipedia that Fiano should be drunk young, please forget that. Mastroberardinos Fianos are still in the barrel for the drinking window indicated there. On the contrary, Fiano from the good growing regions Cilento, Sannio or Avellino only tastes really good after two or three years of bottle ripening in the cellar and remains a fine pleasure and a wonderful universal food companion for a few more years.
Wine journalist Steffen Maus describes Fiano this way: "Aromas of lime blossom, dried fruit, hazelnut, almond and wild fennel are just some of the complex aromas, always accompanied by a wonderful minerality and juiciness on the palate, which invites you to continue drinking. Wonderfully independent and not to be compared with other Italian or French grape varieties."
The most famous growing areas are the DOC Sannio, DOC Cilento and the region around Avellino, which has been upgraded to DOCG since 2003. The Fiano di Avellino is probably the best known. Its vineyards, situated in the heart of Irpinia, reach up to 700 m above sea level, are always well ventilated and particularly fine fruity due to clear temperature differences between day and night.
After new plantations in the last century, Fiano can also be found outside Campania on a small scale in Basilicata, Marche and Sicily, where Planeta has proven what impressive wines can be produced from Fiano. About a handful of producers in Australia are also involved with this variety. SUPERIORE.DE
