The winery Dievole (engl. "God wants it") was founded in 1090. Two friends of Abbate Rolando, the head of the monastery, leased the land for grape harvesting and paid three loaves of bread, one capon and six silver coins per year. The Fattoria, which lies twelve kilometres northeast of Siena and about one kilometre from the picturesque village of Vagliagli in the Chianti Classico region, has been regularly awarded prizes for its excellent wines by experts for many years.
Since 2013, the Dievole Winery has belonged to billionaire Alejandro Pedro Bulgheroni, who already owns several estates in Argentina, Uruguay and California. The much-noticed production site is now to be given a new management. Wine production was already entrusted to Alberto Antonini. The renowned oenologist and wine consultant has worked for Antinori and Frescobaldi as well as wineries in the USA and South America. Antonini had already been engaged years ago by Bulgheroni to take responsibility for his wine production in the Bodeka Garzón in Uruguay.
The change of ownership marked the end of an era. In the early 1970s the Fattoria di Dievole was taken over by the stamp dealer Hartmut Schwenn. In 1989, the long-time owner and his son Mario brought their first own harvest onto the market. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the wine range was completely realigned. The restructuring took place at a time when Edmund Diesler, President of the Association of German Oenologists, managed the estate. Extensive new plantings carry fruits meanwhile.
The total area of around 750 hectares includes 16 vineyards, each cultivated by a single winegrower. Today the production of Fattoria di Dievole ranges from red IGT, Chianti Classico DOCG and Riserva to products such as Vin Santo, Grappa and olive oil. Already in the 1980s the main building, a Renaissance villa, had been renovated and transformed into a hotel and wine resort. SUPERIORE.DE
