Castello Banfi is not only the largest winery of its kind in Tuscany, it also combines tradition and modernity in a unique way. Located in Sant'Angelo Scali not far from Montalcino, the company was founded in 1978 by the Italo-Americans John and Harry Mariani from New York. In the homeland of their grandfathers, the two brothers created a huge wine empire in close cooperation with the pioneer oenologist Dr. Ezio Rivella, who has since retired. After acquiring the almost 3,000 hectares of land, the Marianis selected the most favoured sites of different vineyards. The estate, which today has 850 hectares of vineyards, is connected to a large restaurant and a wine cellar.
Castello Banfi was the first winery in the world to receive an award for his exceptional commitment to the environment and for his great social and ethical commitment. The breeding of new Sangiovese clones has also brought the company much recognition. The parcels are mainly planted with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, but also with Syrah and white varieties. The Swiss enologist Rudy Buratty and the agronomist Maurizio Marmugi are responsible for the outstanding and continuous quality of the fifteen outstanding top wines. The owner interests are represented by Cristina Mariani-May and her cousin James Mariani. As General Manager, Enrico Viglierchio has carried out the comprehensive control of over 100 hectares of DOCG Montalcino vineyards. Each vineyard is considered individually and vinified separately. All the steps to be taken in the high-tech cellar - from the grape mill to fermentation and bottling - are computer-controlled. The steel and wooden barrels are developed by our own team of technicians.
Decades ago, Cristina Mariani-May succeeded in initiating the rebirth of Brunello. It contributed significantly to promoting the reputation of this truly royal wine as an important ambassador for Italy. In addition to the prize-winning Brunello di Montalcino, the Sant'Antimo wines and the Chianti Classico from Banfi are often awarded prizes. (superiore.de)
