Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 (BIO)
With the 2018 vintage, Camigliano joins the still very small community of certified organic winegrowers in Montalcino. Everything is in the right place here and Camigliano's 2018 edition of Brunello di Montalcino presents the classic vintage in a very appealing form. Accessible early on, it reveals its fruity bouquet with notes of Mediterranean scrub, small red berries and eucalyptus. The palate is then medium-bodied, the primary flavours are beautifully reflected here, its freshness and well-proportioned acidity allow it to dance into a remarkable finish. For us, this is a wonderful (and also very attractively priced) entry into the Sangiovese Olympus of Montalcino, fruit-orientated, graceful and full of character. SUPERIORE.DE

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
Beautiful and very well-balanced red wine from the three main historical areas of Montalcino, which have different geoclimatic characteristics due to their different slopes and altitudes - and thus provide a unique balance between freshness and structure, body and elegance. Ruby red in colour with garnet hues, it opens immediately with a rich, complex nose. Initially dark cherry, chinotto orange and violet. It then opens up to broader, more complex notes of blueberry, vanilla, tobacco, cinnamon and chocolate with a subtle menthol finish. When we discovered this winery by chance in the early 2000s, we were struck at first sight by the modesty and purism of the Biliorsi family. This is still the case today, here they remain true to themselves and their philosophy and in good years bring just 10,000 bottles of a "somewhat different" Brunello into the cellar.
Deep dark ruby red, on the nose small black berries, cedar wood, forest floor and a fine nutty roasted aroma. The palate is complex and powerful, with earthy-rustic nuances and a complex mixture of dark fruit, precious woods, a fine plum note and some chocolate. Very intense, impulsive and long and not at all for lovers of polished standard wines. SUPERIORE.DE

Generous Brunello made from grapes from different vineyards in different subzones in Montalcino with the classic charisma of its 2018 vintage. The aromatically intense bouquet opens in a scent of violets and then develops aromas of wild berry, vanilla, tobacco and chocolate. The Brunello di Montalcino 2018 from controlled organic cultivation shows its graceful and delicate side, with wild cherries, blue flowers and warm earthiness. On the palate, the wine is silky and supple, with a hint of crushed minerals and limestone. The fresh acidity makes for a long but wonderfully elegant finish. The final is surprisingly fresh, almost juicy, with a subtle tug of youthful tannins and a hint of liquorice that slowly fades. Not a powerhouse, but a beautifully balanced Brunello of the vintage. Rose petals, mint, cinnamon, dark sweet cherries and smoke lift from the glass in a translucent, wiry Brunello that builds on energy, power and opulence. Here, length and fruit are in the foreground and, together with a clearly defined tannin structure, Leopoldo Franceschi's team has produced a wine here in a very classic vintage that will really reveal itself over the next few years. In the classic Brunello vintage, the 2018 edition is a fine example of the Ciacci style. Opulent, deep bouquet of small red berries, plus multi-layered hints of crushed flowers, tobacco and cherry pits. Very resonant and expressive on the palate, the fine tannins and a well-dosed acidity lead into a soft, very open finish. On the classic bouquet, ripe cherry, tobacco and some damp earth. On the palate, first the pure Sangiovese feeling: beautiful small red berries, wild cherry, lively acidity. Then an impenetrable mesh of red and black fruits, which together with a fine web of tannins and minerals reveal more and more of themselves. Compressed and with each sip more open and present, the beautifully diversified taste components present themselves until they then lead into an aristocratically long and fresh finish with a hint of liquorice. The vineyard on the western side of the Montalcino hills is so secluded that you can enjoy the starry sky to the full without being disturbed. It is therefore not surprising that this supple, very classic Brunello bears the name "Sky of Ulysses". As is well known, Odysseus had the ability to navigate the seas without a compass and by simply orientating himself by the stars.

Pelagrilli 2018 offers a great package of intensity, freshness, firmness and complexity. It delivers generously on all fronts. Lisini's vineyards are located between Sant'Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell'Abate on the inner edge of the Sesta area and are cleansed by the constant breeze from the Tuscan coast. The stony soils with a significant proportion of limestone and the altitude of over 300 metres help to maintain the freshness of the wines. The 2018 is wonderfully fragrant, almost exotic. Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna del Lago” DOCG 2018
In the past, the northern slope of Montalcino was not planted with vines, but was cultivated with cereals, olives and cherries. In this area influenced by the Apennines, the seasons are more pronounced, continental and the north wind significantly lowers the temperature in winter. It is therefore the coldest Brunello region at this time of year, but also the wettest. This northern slope is a gentle hill: a characteristic that is more reminiscent of the Crete Senesi area, right next door, than the two stiffer, steeper and warmer southern slopes of Montalcino.
Due to the climate and the origin of the soil, the grapes in this area of Montalcino are harvested last every year. Vigna del Lago is the vineyard that welcomes all visitors travelling from the north of Montalcino. It takes its name from the lake that surrounds it and which plays a fundamental role in the microclimate of the area; the soil is a constant alternation between clay and strips of very fine Galestro.
Brunello Vigna del Lago is a historic cru from the Val di Suga winery, it is an old-school Brunello, from the times before the arrival of barriques and technology. An authentic product that is enjoying increasing demand. Unlike the Poggio al Granchio, which is aged in new Liters French barriques, this wine matures in large 30- and 50-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels.
It is a wine with a low alcohol content, light orange-ruby colour, with very fine and almost imperceptible tannins, with a floral nose of citrus notes, myrtle and fresh cherries. It is a Brunello of great richness and balance and also has a very pleasant lightness, well-contoured acidity and a salty, mineral finish. SUPERIORE.DE

The year 2018 began with a very cold winter and the subsequent rainfall in spring ensured that flowering only began in the last week of May. The climate in the summer of 2018 was within normal limits again for a long time, and the temperature differences between day and night were also rather classic. And so the grapes were able to ripen gradually and in a very balanced way and the harvest did not have to be brought forward as in 2017. If one wants to classify the 2018 vintage already today, then one could describe it as a mixture of the fresh 2008 and the elegant 2013. Even though the wines still have a long life ahead of them, they are already quite approachable - as in the wonderfully opulent 2015 vintage - and yet display great strength of character. After further months and years of bottle ageing, the picture will certainly become more precise, but we can at least already say that this is a vintage that one should certainly devote more time to. "In Montalcino, the 2018 vintage is one of the most unique and idiosyncratic vintages in living memory, but this is not to say that the wines are not good. They are fruit-driven and open-knit –interpretations. At the top, the 2018 wines offer a level of depth that supports very good ageability; at the "lower end" they are rather supple and already very approachable. The warmth this year was balanced, especially compared to current trends, making it more of a cool vintage by today's standards. 2018 is a producer's vintage where diligence in the vineyard and rigorous selection paid off. "Brunello 2018 - enjoy these wines while you can: 2018 is perhaps not quite a great vintage to kneel down to, but its freshness may be remembered wistfully in years to come. 2018 is a transparent vintage, with no room for error. In Montalcino, most vineyards are planted with the same clones and the same rootstocks. They are usually trained and pruned in the identical way, although some producers throughout the region are changing their vines from –training and spur pruning to –training and cane pruning. "Can the cool and classic 2018 –vintage be described as great? - Our tastings of 315 Brunellos have shown that 2018 is a vintage of inconsistent quality. Some wines are extremely polished and well integrated, with bright, ripe fruit and fine, structured tannins. These wines are attractive to drink now, but are only suitable for medium-term cellaring of up to –years. So be selective when buying 2018 Brunello. In addition, we recommend you buy Brunello from the 2015 and 2016 vintages, here it is worth taking a look at particularly well-rated drops. The 2015s are particularly attractive because they are very good to drink now, but will also mature wonderfully in the future.
"I think we can define the 2018 vintage as a normal and classic vintage," Alex Bianchini, whose family has run the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona winery in Montalicino since the late 19th century, said in a –interview. "We had a rainy spring until mid-June; July and August were not too hot." One of our top three rated 2018s is the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso 2018, which is not a perfect wine like the 2015 vintage, but it is intense and structured, with firm and seamless tannins – one of the few 2018s that needs some time to soften. Many of the best Brunello in our tastings come from the magical hill of Montosoli, north of Montalcino. Altesino, the pioneer of the Montosoli "crus", stands out with its intense, powerful and complex Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2018. Characteristic of the vintage, it is already lovely to taste but will linger in bottle for some time. The 2017 Montosoli is equally impressive and stylish and one of the best wines of the hot and difficult vintage, but best tasted after a few years. The 2018 and 2017 are both rated as highly as the 2016 and 2015, highlighting the complexity and quality of Montosoli grapes in great and difficult vintages.
The 2018 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa is another outstanding wine, every bit as good as the 2016. It is full-bodied and powerful, with muscular, ripe tannins, an impressive achievement for the vintage, sourced from the five-hectare La Casa vineyard on the sunny southern slope of Montosoli. Our top-rated Brunello 2018 is a new single-vineyard wine from Casanova di Neri. The 2018 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino "Giovanni Neri" comes from a seven hectare plot of 50 year old vines on the south-eastern slope of Montalcino and features beautiful ripe fruit combined with white pepper and white truffle complexity, framed by very fine, creamy and expansive tannins.
