Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021 (BIO)
The Ghezzi family has been cultivating the extensive estate on the south-western slope of Montalcino since 1957 – 530 hectares in total, 50 of which are planted with Sangiovese Grosso alone, on clay-limestone soils with silt and fossil inclusions. A Brunello that combines the power of the south with the elegance of careful clonal selection comes from this sunny, warm location on the Ombrone. 20 to 30 days of maceration on the skins, fermentation at 26–28 °C, followed by 24 months in oak barrels and a full year of bottle ageing. The 2021 vintage is considered a classic great Annata: late frost in April noticeably reduced the yields, a warm but never overheated summer and two saving August rains brought the grapes to full, slow phenolic ripeness.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Sometimes a great vintage needs a little scare first. In April 2021, the thermometer dropped to minus seven degrees in parts of Montalcino – late frost, which hit the more sensitive sites and reduced the harvest to around 15 per cent below the previous year. What was a loss for some farms proved to be a gift for quality. Fewer grapes, more concentration. The surviving vines seemed to know what was at stake. The rest of the year followed the textbook pattern of classic Brunello meteorology: regular spring, hot and dry summer – then two decisive rain events in the second half of August, which gave the vineyards water and the grapes their final aromatic complexity. The September nights cooled the Sant'Angelo vineyard in Colle to temperatures that distinguish phenolic ripeness from genuine elegance. Harvest did not start until mid to late September – patiently waited, fully redeemed. Col d'Orcia's vinification remains almost meditative in its consistency: selection at harvest, maceration for 18 to 20 days at a maximum of 28°C in shallow steel tanks, then the long journey through three years in large Slavonian and Allier barrels (25 to 75 hectolitres). Bottle rest for at least twelve months. Count Francesco Marone Cinzano decided early on that the Sangiovese from this site needed no intervention – only time, wood and respect.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021
In 1985, estate manager Giuseppe Bianchini inherited the estate from the childless Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona – a vote of confidence that is renewed every year. Today, his children Paolo and Lucia continue the legacy, 55 hectares in the privileged area of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, in the shadow of the Romanesque Abbey of Sant'Antimo. The 2021 vintage is considered one of the most brilliant of the last decade: bright September days and cool nights gave the Sangiovese that rare balance of aromatic precision and tannic finesse. 24 months in large Slavonian barrels, then further rest in the bottle.

Forty vintages. You have to let that melt in your mouth: When Pierluigi Talenti left the mountains of his native Romagna in the early 1950s and came to the hills of Montalcino, he not only found work at Sant'Angelo in Colle, but also his life's work. For over four decades, he shaped one of the appellation's most famous addresses as cellar master of Il Poggione – and is still considered one of the founding fathers of modern Brunello. He selected his own Sangiovese clones, set new quality standards and became a role model for an entire generation. In 1980, at the end of this era, he bought the Podere Pian di Conte – an old estate with a round tower overlooking the Orcia Valley – and began to press his own Brunello. Pierluigi died in 1999. Since then, grandson Riccardo has run the estate with the same tenacity, advised by Carlo Ferrini and supported by the knowledge that there is something special in these soils of sandy loam, clay and galestro.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Montalcino is not a homogeneous terroir – it is a mosaic of microclimates, altitudes and soil formations that produces completely different interpretations of Sangiovese in a very small area. San Polo is located in the south-east, on the hill of Podernovi, where the extinct volcano Monte Amiata shields the vineyards from the hot Scirocco winds and has left behind pyroclastic deposits that give the Sangiovese a mineral signature that few other sites possess. At 450 metres above sea level, the estate belongs to the cooler zones of the appellation – large temperature amplitudes between day and night promote flavour and acidity structure, while the dryness of the summer concentrates the berries without stressing them.

Brunello di Montalcino “Pianrosso” DOCG 2021
Pianrosso: the red field. The name tells of iron-rich soils that give the Sangiovese that mineral depth that no cellar in the world can imitate. 11.7 hectares on the south-eastern edge of Montalcino, between 240 and 360 metres above sea level, where ancient marine material meets Galestro slate. Giuseppe Bianchini had the vineyard replanted in the 1980s, knowing that the heart of the winery lies dormant here. Pianrosso is only bottled in superior years, a strict selection of the best grapes, a whole year longer in Slavonian vats than the classic Brunello. 36 months in large wood, then further rest in the bottle. The result is not a wine for quick enjoyment, but a document of patience. In 2021, Montalcino produced one of those vintages that you never forget: bright September days, cool nights, perfect phenolic ripeness.

Brunello di Montalcino “Pian delle Vigne” DOCG 2021
A railway station from the 19th century still stands on the estate – silent, fallen out of time, functionless. The wine that is produced here has something of this image: it doesn't hurry, it waits. And the 2021 came quietly anyway – no record-breaking summer, no headlines, just a cool spring, moderate heat and day-night fluctuations that gave the Sangiovese exactly what it needed: room to mature. Tenuta Pian delle Vigne is located six kilometres southwest of Montalcino, on calcareous clay soil with fine gravel, exposed to the southwest, around 130 metres above sea level. Antinori-owned since 1995 – and has been unyieldingly committed to the same principle ever since: large wooden barrels of between 30 and 80 hectolitres that preserve rather than dominate the Sangiovese fruit. No barrique dictates, no fashionable make-up. Only conviction.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021 (BIO)
In 1991, Luigi Fabbro and Katia Nussbaum found an abandoned hill southeast of Montalcino: no water, no electricity – but 600-year-old olive trees and soil that had not seen any chemicals for decades. This is exactly what they were looking for. Gigi, a Friulian with experience in biodiversity mapping in the Amazon, and Katia, a London anthropologist, became pioneers of the biodynamic movement in Montalcino. All vintages have been certified organic since 2001. Of the 35 hectares, only four and a half are planted with vines. The rest: forest, wilderness, corridors for animals and insects. "I see every bottle as performance art," says Katia. "Our entire philosophy of life is in the wine." The basic Brunello comes from the northern slopes, on clayey, marly soils. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, matured for three and a half years in large Slavonian barrels.

Brunello di Montalcino “Comunali” DOCG 2021
"Fragrante, definite e verticale." This is how some Masters of Wine describe the 2021 Brunello vintage – fragrant, precise, vertical. Rarely does an official assessment so accurately capture the essence of a wine. Yet 2021 was not an easy year. An unusually late frost in April decimated the quantities, delayed growth and – and quietly did the wine some good. No extreme heatwaves afterwards. No drought stress to panic the vines. Instead: an even summer, dry ripening, a relaxed harvest from the end of September. The soils on the eastern slopes of Montalcino, a mixture of red clay, limestone and slate, came into their own in 2021. San Filippo's organic certification pays off particularly well in years like these: living soils that retain water and deliver precision.

Montalcino in November 2008. Gianni Brunelli's thread broke – as Laura herself put it (he passed away). Anyone familiar with the elegance with which the winery has been run since then will understand that this was not the beginning of an end, but rather a different kind of continuity: quieter, more focussed, perhaps even more resolute. Laura Brunelli, biologist, Sardinian, soul of two institutions for decades – osteria Le Logge in Siena and the wineries on the slopes of Montalcino – has not replaced Gianni. She has carried on. And that's a difference you can feel in the glass.

![Brunello di Montalcino "Helichrysum" DOCG 2021 (BIO)]()
Brunello di Montalcino “Helichrysum” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
On warm days, a resinous, musky scent rises from the hedge edges. Helichrysum – the immortelle, the Italians also call it "Immortelle", the immortal. It grows wild among the rocks and bushes that line San Polino's highest vineyards. When Katia and Gigi were looking for a name for their best wine, they didn't have to look far. The five hectares surrounding the farmhouse lie at an altitude of 450 metres, facing south, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and forest. The view extends to Monte Amiata – the sacred mountain of the Etruscans, seat of their highest gods, the Tuscan Olympus. The soils tell of two powerful forces: the volcanic eruption of Mount Amiata 180,000 years ago, which left behind quartz and metamorphic clay, and the retreat of the Pliocene sea, which left behind sandy loams and shell fossils. Thin, complex soil – poor in nutrients, rich in character. Up here, the scirocco blows from the Sahara. The temperature differences between day and night are enormous. The grapes ripen slowly, develop thick skins and concentrated flavours. "Ah ... 2018," Katia once said about a cooler vintage, "finally you can smell Sangiovese grapes instead of just blackcurrant and undergrowth." Helichrysum is all about precisely this clarity – terroir instead of heat, soil instead of opulence.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021
Gigliola Giannetti was born on the Argiano wine estate, the daughter of an employee in the wine cellar. She grew up among barrels and vines, the smell of fermenting must was the scent of her childhood. At 19, she joined Franco Biondi Santi, and later Giulio Gambelli encouraged her to make wine herself. In 1993, the time had come: first parcel, first child – daughter Viola. Three years later came two more hectares and daughter Sofia. Today, three women stand together in the cellar and three generations of Montalcino in one line. Le Potazzine is one of the highest vineyards in the appellation: 450 to 530 metres, where the harvest begins up to three weeks later than in the valley. What used to be considered a disadvantage is now worth its weight in gold – the grapes ripen slowly, retain their acidity and develop finesse instead of mere vigour. Vinification is uncompromisingly traditional: spontaneous fermentation, 30 to 45 days of maceration, no temperature control. The wine then rests for 42 months in large Slavonian oak barrels – six months longer than is even required for a Riserva. So every Brunello from Le Potazzine is actually a Riserva. Why don't they call it that? Modesty, or perhaps quiet pride.

Brunello di Montalcino “Podernovi” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
There are vineyards that are named after the place where they are located. And there are vineyards that give the place its name in the first place. Podernovi is one such case – the three hectares of Sangiovese that have been growing on this plot for over thirty years are so inextricably linked to the hill that the vineyard and district bear the same name. When San Polo bottled the first single-vineyard Brunello from this vineyard in 2015, it was less a debut than a recognition of what the soil had long known. Podernovi lies at 450 metres above sea level, facing south-east, where the view sweeps across the Val d'Orcia to Monte Amiata. The soils are a kaleidoscope of Tuscan geology: marl and galestro, the slate-like clay that gives the best Sangiovese vineyards in the region their unnerving minerality, interspersed with clay that stores water and supplies the vines even in dry summers. What sets this vineyard apart from others is not just its terroir, but the rigour with which San Polo cultivates it: four to five grapes per vine, no more – 700 to 800 grams per vine, a yield that is reminiscent of Burgundy conditions and forces the Sangiovese to achieve a concentration that it rarely reaches elsewhere.

Sometimes it takes a single vineyard to understand what a vintage really means. 2021: "fragrante, definite e verticale" – is the official verdict of some Masters of Wine. Fragrant, precise, vertical. For Le Lucére, this east-facing parcel on Galestro and slate, this sounds like a description of the wine's characteristics. No vintage in recent years fits the DNA of this site as well as 2021. The late frost in April decimated the quantities – what remained was more concentrated, healthier, more focussed. No heat stress in summer. A relaxed harvest at the end of September, in which the vines gave the last of what the season had to offer: clear fruit, lively acidity, fine-grained tannins. When Alessandro Mori and his young family moved into the dilapidated house on the northern walls of Montalcino in 1993, there was only one habitable room. The rest was decay and promise. Today, three decades later, Il Marroneto is a monument to what perseverance and conviction can create. The building itself dates back to the 13th century – a drying house for chestnuts (marroni) that once belonged to the nuns of the small Madonna delle Grazie chapel. Here they prepared bread for weary pilgrims on the Via Francigena. Alessandro still remembers the bells ringing over the vineyards of his childhood.

Brunello di Montalcino “Pianrosso” DOCG 2021 · MAGNUM in OWC

Brunello di Montalcino “30°vendemmia” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
The year 1991 was the first. With the 2021 vintage, Poggio di Sotto is celebrating its thirtieth Brunello – an anniversary that the estate is marking with a special label in gold print, discreetly and without pomp, entirely in the style of the house. Thirty vintages that have proven that elegance is not a weakness. 2021 was not an easy year. Late frosts in spring decimated the harvest, summer brought heat, August finally brought rain – a sequence that could have been disastrous in other hands. Cellar master Leonardo Berti sees this as the special character of this vintage: fewer grapes, more concentration and an intensity gained through stress, which was kept in balance by the freshness of the long growing season. The soils – a mosaic of white and red clay, galestro and grey marl – did the rest. Spontaneous fermentation in wooden vats, maceration for at least 30 days, 42 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, unfiltered. The recipe is the same. The wine is not.

Brunello di Montalcino “Vignavecchia” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Frost fell over Montalcino on 7 April 2021. And again on 15 April. In some vineyards, it destroyed a third of the harvest. In Vignavecchia, on its steep western slope at an altitude of 420 metres, it hit the vines differently: not as destruction, but as selection. What survived were the strongest shoots, the best protected grapes – a natural yield limitation, more radical than any human intervention. Nature cut what the winegrower would never have dared. What followed was a summer of extremes and an autumn of perfection. The months up to August were hot and dry, followed by sporadic rainfall that gave the vines a rest. September brought what Sangiovese needs: warm days, cool nights, those temperature amplitudes that preserve flavour and acidity while phenolic ripeness progresses. The harvest began almost two weeks earlier than was usual just a few years ago – a sign of climate change, but this year also a sign of good fortune: the grapes reached perfection before the autumn rains set in.

![Brunello di Montalcino "Madonna delle Grazie" DOCG 2021]()
Brunello di Montalcino “Madonna delle Grazie” DOCG 2021
The vines cover two hectares directly below the small chapel that gave the wine its name. This is the steepest, oldest part of the estate, where Alessandro Mori heard the bells over the vines as a child. If there is a wine that is to become his legacy, then it must come from here. Brunello Madonna delle Grazie does not appear every year. There was none in 2002 and 2014 – the grapes were not good enough. This decision costs money, but Alessandro Mori has never acted on it. What distinguishes the Madonna from all other Brunellos in the appellation – even from its own basic Brunello – is the vinification. While the classic Il Marroneto is born with fermentation temperatures of up to 40°C and intensive extraction, the Madonna follows the opposite path: two days of rest after the harvest, then cool fermentation at 28°C for three to four weeks. The extraction is gentle, almost tender – more of an infusion than a maceration, closer to Pinot Noir than to classic Sangiovese. Then matured for 40 months in neutral vats.

Two vintages, two characters – a great chapter of Montalcino
Sometimes great vintages stand out not because of their volume, but because of their inner order. Brunello di Montalcino 2021 belongs precisely in this category. A vintage that draws its excitement not from opulence, but from precision, balance and fidelity to its origins. It is contrasted with the Brunello Riserva 2020 – a year that was demanding, must be considered selectively and, where everything came together, was able to produce impressive depth.
Rarely have the differences between a classic Brunello vintage and its riserves been so obvious. And rarely have international critics been both so unanimous and so differentiated in their assessment. Four voices, four perspectives – together they paint a precise picture of these two vintages.
Montalcino in transition
Montalcino is at an exciting point in its history. Climatic extremes, changing consumer habits and a growing need for origin and identity characterise the debate. At the same time, it is clear that great vintages are not created despite these challenges, but because of them – if they are answered wisely.
The 2021 vintage is a prime example of this. Frost in April, a moderate summer without extreme heat, marked differences between day and night and an ideally temperate September produced wines with freshness, structure and remarkable inner calm. The yields were lower, the selection strict – but this is precisely where the quality of this vintage lies. "We see a harmonious, elegant vintage with great ageing potential," explains Giacomo Bartolommei, President of the consortium. "Now we are waiting for the market reaction – the first signals for the vintage available from January are very positive."
Over the coming weeks and months, numerous Brunello di Montalcino 2021s and selected Riservas from the remarkable 2020 vintage will be successively added to our climate-controlled warehouse. At the same time, it is worth taking a look at the assessments of those international critics who tasted these vintages early and intensively. We have summarised and classified some of the most important opinions for you below.
FALSTAFF | Structure, verticality and patience.
Falstaff describes Brunello 2021 as a vintage with clear architecture. The wines are "fragrant, precise and vertical" – a term that means more than just freshness. It is about resilience, length, the interplay of acidity and tannin, which does not chum up but wants to be developed. "We see a harmonious, elegant vintage with great ageing potential." Falstaff
Many Brunello 2021 wines currently appear reserved, even closed off. That's exactly what makes them credible. Falstaff recommends patience – not as a warning, but as an invitation. Those who wait will be rewarded. Buying now is buying the future.
DECANTER | Expression, finesse, early joy.
Decanter approaches the vintage from a different perspective – and completes the picture perfectly. The 2021s surprise with structure without heaviness, with clarity without coolness. "A symphony of fragrant aromas." Decanter
What is particularly emphasised here is the balance between accessibility and depth. Many 2021 Brunello wines are already showing charm, ripe fruit and an impressive aromatic openness – without being covered by wood. The winemaker's signature, the meticulous work in the vineyard, the precise harvest: all of this can be tasted. Decanter also emphasises the remarkable quality across the entire growing region. A vintage that not only produces individual lighthouses, but also impresses across the board.
VINOUS.COM | Modern classic with provenance.
Vinous has clear words: 2021 is a triumph for Montalcino. The wines combine early drinking pleasure with a maturation potential of 15 to 20 years – a rare balancing act. "The 2021s are all about grace, vibrancy and purity." Vinous
The return of the expression of origin is particularly noteworthy. While warm vintages such as 2015 or 2020 often suffered from homogeneity, the 2021s once again show a pronounced sense of place and location. Fresh acidity, precise fruit and a lively texture give the wines tension and direction. Vinous ranks the vintage just below legendary years such as 2016 or 2019 – with the decisive advantage of earlier accessibility. A vintage that is enjoyable without losing its seriousness.
THE WINE ADVOCATE | Clarity, generations and the Tramontana
Monica Larner's report in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate is more than a vintage review – it is a snapshot of Montalcino. The cold Tramontana winds become a metaphor for clarity, precision and inner order. "You can taste the wind in the wines."Wine Advocate
The 2021 Brunello wines show freshness, structural clarity and comparatively moderate alcohol levels. They appear polished, focussed, almost ascetic – without being austere. Larner also emphasises the dynamism within the region: young winemakers, experienced technicians and the founding figures are working together more closely today than ever before. Montalcino, he concludes, is alive. And the 2021 vintage is an expression of precisely this vitality.
Brunello Riserva 2020
The 2020 Riserva vintages were quite different: a warm, sometimes irregular year in which location, timing and ageing made the difference between success and disappointment. Antonio Galloni (VINOUS.COM) speaks openly of inconsistent quality. High alcohol, ripe fruit and long periods in wood could jeopardise the balance. But where everything came together, outstanding wines were produced – true character pieces with depth and personality. The Riserva 2020 is not a vintage for sweeping judgements. It demands selection, knowledge and trust in the producers. This is where mediocrity separates from greatness.
Understand now, choose wisely, think long-term
Brunello 2021 stands for precision, origin and long-term greatness. A vintage that does not focus on quick impact, but on inner balance and ageing potential. The Riserva 2020, on the other hand, demands attention and experience – it rewards where origin, timing and ageing work together perfectly. Both vintages tell the story of today's Montalcino: of selection instead of arbitrariness, of passionate craftsmanship instead of compromise and of wines that gain even more stature over time. Great Brunello vintages are not a promise – they are an investment in time. SUPERIORE.DE
