Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2019
Deep, dark Riserva with a powerful berry bouquet and intense spicy notes and hints of damp forest floor. Taut on the palate, crisp fruit, solid tannins, good length. Lots of energy, nice spice and great potential! SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby colour with a fine garnet sheen. Very intense and inviting nose, flavours of raspberries, cherry jam and hazelnut biscuits. Firm tannins dominate the palate, lots of damson." Falstaff
"On the nose, the sweetness of cherry and vanilla is balanced by the gentle bitterness of orange zest and herbs. On the palate, a rush of chocolate invigorates the fruit element, but balance is maintained by an earthiness that's drawn out by chalky, clingy tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"The Chianti Classico Riserva 2019 is a blend of Sangiovese (90%) with smaller proportions of Merlot and Colorino. It shows a dark, saturated appearance and a heavy aromatic load of black fruits, ripe cherries, plums, spices and sweet floral earth. The wine finishes with medium concentration, herbal notes and the natural freshness of Sangiovese." Wine Advocate
"There's a good balance of fruit and oak here, with red berries and fine oak giving off a hint of vanilla. Medium to full-bodied with well-integrated fruit and oak tannins and a sort of plump feel on the palate. The finish is medium length at the moment but should lengthen with time in the bottle. Try it from mid-2024." James Suckling

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019
Intense ruby garnet colour. Powerful nose of savoury cherries, spicy notes, light leather, orange and plum. Equally powerful, juicy and multi-layered on the palate, with finely characterised fruit and present, fine-grained tannins. The tension of this polished wine extends into the long, elegant finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark red; reductive, barrel-like, a little caramel; dense, concentrated, fruit, fullness, lots of sweetness, fine tart, long." Merum
"Bright, brightening ruby red colour. Fragrant nose of blood oranges, watermelon, raspberries, plus fine notes of fruit tea, also fine floral notes. Very juicy and clear on the palate, with a nice salty note, precise, elegant, drinks very well, with a blood orange final." Falstaff
"The nose features a playful, fresh blend of aromas, which includes cherry, vanilla, coffee, strawberry jam and milk chocolate. On the palate, the cherry and chocolate elements intensify, but are balanced by the sweet astringency of oranges. Tannins are ripping, while the acid is more restrained." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a classic wine with lean fruit and elegant berry flavours that stays true to the Sangiovese grape, which is 100% represented here. The wine offers sultry, dark plum and spice with forest floor and black olive flavours. The wine ends with a medium-bodied finish and lovely freshness. Production is limited to 5,000 bottles." A small pearl in the confusing wine-growing region of Chianti Classico is the Tenuta di Lilliano. The winery has remained true to its guidelines even in the seductive times of the Chianti boom and produces fantastic wines with a classical approach and hints of modernity. In 1958, Princess Eleonora Ruspoli Berlingieri began producing and marketing fine wines. Her family had acquired the estate in 1920. Today, the Tenuta di Lilliano is owned by Giulio (managing director) and Pietro Ruspoli. Situated on the Elsa Valley between Castellina and Monteriggioni, the estate covers 460 hectares, 50 of which are planted with vines. Although the medieval layout has been preserved in terms of topography, cellars and ring wall, the architectural structure changed until the 19th century.
Tenuta di Lilliano produces wines, grappa and olive oil, but also offers travellers hospitality in ten ancient country houses that have been recently restored. The vineyards are planted exclusively with red wine varieties - the indigenous Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino del Valdarno as well as the French grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The grapes thrive on mostly stony and calcareous Alberese soils. In new vineyards, Sangiovese was planted exclusively with clones from the "Chianti Classico 2000" research project initiated by the Chianti Classico Consortium.
The vinification and ageing process at Tenuta di Lilliano is predominantly traditional. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled, glass-lined concrete tanks. Depending on the type of wine, the wines are then matured in steel tanks or barriques. Lorenzo Landi is the Oenologist and Andrea Brunelli the cellar master responsible for production. Among the bottle treasures in the estate's own wine cellar are the Ruspoli Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva and Gran Selezione and the IGT wine Anagallis, whose name is derived from a small orange flower that grows in the Chianti region. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Ruspoli family has not abandoned the belief in something like typicality of Chianti Classico, but with each new vintage stakes out what we might understand as terroir." Andreas März, Merum
