Rosato Toscana IGT 2022
Delicate salmon pink. Fresh and discreet raspberry nose with a hint of pomegranate. Clean and precise on the palate with fine acidity and subtle hints of red berries and some crisp Braeburn apple. The finish is long and smooth - and again with a fine Sangiovese acid wire of acidity that only Sean O'Callaghan can put in the glass. An indispensable companion for happy and carefree days. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, brilliant salmon pink with pink reflections. Beguiling, complex nose, redcurrant, blackberry, behind it thyme and fresh rosemary. On the palate additional cherry, juicy and tense, fine, animating tannins, persistent finish." Falstaff

“Il Randagio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
Il Randagio, the "stray", is Sean's new Bordeaux cuvée made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Initially quite closed, the delicately spicy nose creeps up with increasing aeration and opens up further into a wonderfully complex bouquet of dark red to black berries. The palate is wide-ranging with delicate forest berry flavours, perfectly polished tannins and a fresh, very invigorating acid wire that uninhibitedly enhances the drinkability of this once again typically different red. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich, bright ruby red colour. Delicately scented on the nose, small red berries and orange zest. Lots of cherry on the palate, delicate, well-balanced, ripe, well-integrated tannins, savoury final." Falstaff
"The 2021 Il Randagio, the estate's red blend, is another wine in this range that demands cellaring. Dark and muscular, yet with the finesse that characterizes all these wines. Black cherry, lavender, spice, leather and sweet pipe tobacco emerge with air. The wine's best days are in the future though." Vinous
"The Tenuta di Carleone 2021 Il Randagio is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot and features the cartoon character of a bulldog with a top hat and eye patch on the label. You can taste the flavours that come from the long maceration with grape skins and dried plums. Matured exclusively in cement, this wine shows energy and a bright, powerful personality. It offers a very authentic or individual quality with raw blackberry and cherry flavours." Wine Advocate

“Pianvecchio” Bianco Toscana IGT 2021
"1,500 bottles and a destination yet to be determined - maybe it will be a wine just for friends." Thank you, dear Sean, for letting us be one of your friends!
Exciting, balsamic, white cuvée of Vermentino, Trebbiano and Malvasia - with a handful of Traminer and Riesling. Reductive in the nose at first, then dark yellow fruits, some smoke. In the mouth, very direct, straightforward and grippingly mineral, with crisp acidity, citrus zest and a fine-juicy yellow fruit. It lingers long in the mouth and, with its race and alpine freshness, makes you forget for a moment that this unadorned and very concise white comes from Tuscany. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, bright straw yellow. Intriguing nose, slightly reductive, relatively little fruit, some lemon, sage, a hint of rose petals. Gripping on the palate at first, mineral, then lively acidity, fresh, persistent, mouthwatering final." Falstaff

Sparkling ruby with a pronounced garnet shimmer. Very inviting aroma of cherries and delicate meadow herbs, with a nutty touch. Medium-bodied on the palate, again wonderfully juicy fruit, cool, mineral style, very finely structured and balanced, with lively animo, lingers quite long and makes you want to drink the next glass. Perfect companion to Italian dishes. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Chianti Classico is a very beautiful wine. Bright and lively, the 2020 offers scents of dried herbs, tobacco, mint, lavender and bluish fruits. The 2020 has an unmistakable transparency. I admire this wine for its absolute precision and nuance. harvestshould expect a fresh and distinctive interpretation of Chianti Classico. This is one of the best wines of the year, without question." Vinous
"Bright, radiant ruby red. Initially with slightly volatile acidity on the nose, then very fragrant and floral of rose hips, blood oranges, some rose petal, minimal spice in the finish, inviting. On the palate with great juiciness, shows clear, juicy cherry fruit, pithy-salty final, nice length." Falstaff
"The 2020 takes some time to develop, but then it unleashes its floral aromas of roses, violets and red currants. It achieves lightness with insidious structure; a textural symphony of suede-like tannins and juicy acidity racing through plump nectarines and raspberries in this delicious annata." Decanter
"The Tenuta di Carleone 2020 Chianti Classico boasts a very bright and vibrant set of fruit aromas with summer cherry and blueberry. There are mild spices and clove on the close. Dusty minerality also appears. This a very fun wine." Wine Advocate

“Il Guercio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
Treat yourself to a big glass or better: decant the wildly racy Il Guercio, then a dark berry mix with black cherries and a hint of dark chocolate will be in the air. On the palate, equally juicy Sangiovese fruit, full-bodied with fine silky tannins, elegant and finely structured, with animating acidity, very precise and animating in the long finish. Potential for many years in the cellar. A not at all loud, but highly impressive wine full of elegance and the masterpiece of the winery. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Il Guercio is a wine with class. Bright, silky and beautifully perfumed, the 2021 has tons of finesse. Sweet red Sangiovese fruit opens first, followed by a burst of exotic floral and spicy notes that give it character. The wine has real substance and presence. The racy yet light-footed Il Guercio 2021 is a true star." Vinous
"Radiant, shiny ruby red. Open and inviting nose, floral, of violets, roses and juicy fresh cherries, underpinned by vegetal spice, plus sugared wild strawberries. Opens up on the palate with great crispness, juicy, clear, showing youthful fresh tannin on the final, can still age." Falstaff
"The Tenuta di Carleone 2021 Il Guercio, named after the Tuscan word for "one-eyed rogue", is a pure Sangiovese aged in cement barrels for up to five months. The wine delivers a very clear and true-to-type expression with bright plums, wild cherries and iris roots. You can taste the artisanal approach of this beautiful wine. Dusty lime notes provide a cool finish. I am pleased to recommend this very special wine." Wine Advocate

“Uno” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019
This wine is the essence of Sangiovese from the Radda commune and the result of the rigorous selection of Sangiovese grapes from the estate's best sites. An elegant, terroir-driven red that is (in Sean's words) "made the way we like it.
Bright shining ruby garnet. Attractive, precisely marked nose with distinct notes of raspberry, some pomegranate. Fine fruit, freshness and a good acid structure on the nose, also shows a distinctive tannin, which withdraws characterfully after minutes of further aeration. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby with brightening rim. Very fragrant and appealing on the nose, of goji berries, pomegranate, plus some plums, clear and present. Juicy in attack and course, unfolds with grippy, hearty tannin, fine salty notes, firm pressure in the final." Falstaff
"Closed with a white wax capsule, the Tenuta di Carleone 2019 Uno is all Sangiovese that sees two months on the skins during fermentation and a year and half of cellaring between cement, stainless steel and large oak casks. The wine offers a fun and distinctive bouquet with candied cherry, crushed limestone, herbal nuances and crushed flowers. There could be a distant hint of entrapped CO2 that you perceive on the finish. It adds some spice and snap." Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Uno shows the darker side of Sangiovese. Wild and potent, Uno is another compelling wine from Tenuta di Carleone. Dried flowers, herbs, incense, leather and tobacco lead into a core of wild cherry fruit as the 2019 gradually opens in the glass. Stellar and compelling, Uno is absolutely fabulous in 2019." Vinous

Silky and polished in the attack and course, fine raspberry note, very juicy, opens with fine-meshed tannin in many layers, firm pressure in the final, pithy." Falstaff
"The 2020 Il Guercio (Sangiovese) is airy, gracious and perfumed. Crushed red berry fruit, flowers, white pepper, orange zest and mint lend notable aromatic presence to this mid-weight, eccentric Sangiovese. All the elements are so nicely balanced. Il Guercio is one of the most distinctive wines in all of Chianti Classico." Vinous
"The Tenuta di Carleone 2020 Il Guercio is all Sangiovese that sees an extended skin maceration lasting five months and aging in cement vats. Fruit comes from an especially high vineyard located 700 meters above sea level, which is unusual for this area. This special wine reveals an exotic personality with layers of cumin, exotic spice and honey that frame a core of dark fruit. There is crushed white pepper over a very delicate and streamlined mouthfeel. This wine shows how closely Sangiovese can get to Pinot Noir." Robert Parker

When "newcomers" fall in love with a region, it can happen that they not only stay, but also put more love into their products and pay much more attention to quality than the locals themselves. This is particularly common in Tuscany. And when two quality lovers meet and run a winery together, the result is simply terrific wines.
Austrian entrepreneur Karl Egger and his family fell in love with a wonderful spot in the south of Tuscany near Radda in Chianti and acquired an old country estate there. It is actually a hamlet with a chapel, a small village, you could say, because that's what Castiglioni means in Italian. Its history goes back to the year 1078. Back then, the monks of the nearby Badia a Coltibuono monastery founded this estate, which has been lovingly restored and reactivated by the Eggers in recent years. It comprises around 100 hectares of land. Most of it is wooded, but there are also around 20 hectares of vineyards and around 10 hectares of olive groves, which have been cultivated since 2012.
Sean O'Callaghan - affectionately called "Il Guercio" by his friends, which could be loosely translated as "the one-eyed rascal" - is actually English and was born in Sri Lanka, where his family ran tea plantations. Back in England, his father planted vines near Somerset and sent Sean to Germany, where he studied viticulture in Geisenheim and then - instead of taking over the vineyard in England - stayed there and became cellar master at the Diel winery, among others. During a holiday in Italy, he met John Dunkley, the owner of Riecine, a pioneer in Chianti Classico and his OenologistSergio Manetti (Montevertine - Le Pergole Torte), got the job as winemaker and stayed there for almost a quarter of a century until he met Karl Egger.
Perfect conditions for two visionaries.
Karl Egger offered Sean O'Callaghan the opportunity to build up the Tenuta di Carleone winery, gave him a free hand in winemaking and let him re-equip the cellar. From stainless steel to wooden fermentation racks, oak barrels in various sizes to modern cement tanks like those in the most expensive Bordeaux cellars - Sean can vinify each individual parcel as he sees fit. The new wine cellar is an impressive 600 square metres in size and the temperature and humidity are constant. Concrete and stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels for fermentation are available, as well as oak storage barrels in various sizes. Sean O'Callaghan summarises the perfect conditions in the cellar as follows: "To get the best out of the outstanding quality of the grapes, the processing, maturation and storage of the wines are extremely important - and we have them now more than ever". The cultivation is organic-biological, partly biodynamic, fermentation is only carried out with the winery's own yeasts and spontaneously. Long skin contact and slow fermentation, sometimes with whole grapes, make all the difference.
Specification: "Sangiovese with a twist. Sean's twist".
The vineyards around Radda, all the way over to Gaiole, are among the best in Chianti Classico. This densely wooded, mountainous landscape is somewhat cooler and always characterised by a fresh breeze. Some vineyards reach up to almost 700 metres above sea level. During the day, the onshore winds blow in from the sea, while at night the wind from the mountains freshens up and cools the vines. This interplay produces a juicy, pronounced fruit, and the barren, chalky soils allow the vines to take deep root and bring elegance and mineral notes to the wines. Sean O'Callaghan's wines are often described as Burgundian. They are always elegant and delicate. The result of his passionate work is not only a pleasure to savour, but also a pleasure to behold. Numerous awards, including from Italy's most important wine guide Gambero Rosso, bear witness to this. The wines of Tenuta di Carleone are also regularly praised by Robert Parker, James Suckling, Antonio Galloni and Falstaff. But the Tenuta is not just a winery, it has also long been an oasis of rest and relaxation surrounded by picturesque nature. Melinda Egger puts her heart and soul into managing 15 luxurious flats on the noble estate and has created a place for her guests that leaves nothing to be desired. SUPERIORE.DE
