Etna Rosato DOC 2022 (BIO)
Terre Neres Etna Rosato opens flavoursome and animating in the glass. The bouquet has notes of fresh almonds, dried flowers, smoky mandarins and maritime minerals. On the palate, it has an excellent, silky texture and ripe melon with white stone fruit. A salty character hovers over everything, mingling with vibrant acidity and traces of tannin, providing plenty of tension and balance. A fabulous rosé of polished elegance and purity. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light, bright salmon pink with copper reflections. Delicate on the nose, with delicate aromas of cherry and fresh strawberries. Creamy and beautifully juicy on the palate, polished fruit, balanced and harmonious overall." Falstaff
"A plush rosé marked by succulent acidity, with peach skin, white cherry and watermelon aromas and flavors that burst from the glass. Offers floral, chalk, eucalyptus and smoke accents." Wine Spectator
"Notes of candied cherries and dried orange peel with hints of flowers and minerals. Clean and concentrated on the palate with a medium body, consistent acidity and a lively, flinty character on the finish." James Suckling
"This onion-skin coloured Etna rosé from one of the volcano's best producers is excellent value. It is made from the estate's youngest Nerello Mascalese vines and has an airy bouquet of oyster shells, wild herbs, wet stone and creamy lees, with some delicate red fruits meandering through. Initially very pithy and savoury, it soon gains creamy weight and a beautiful, balanced intensity of pure red fruit. The mid-palate is very stony and mineral, with savoury notes of lime and orange peel, and finishes long, bright, fresh and salty." Decanter

Dark, radiant ruby red colour. Pure and elegant, with spicy herbal aromas and fresh fruit notes of cherry and redcurrant. Etna Bianco from Terre Nere offers a surprising degree of depth and sophistication. The cuvée of Carricante, Catarratto, Grecanico, Inzolia and Minnella has an aroma of grapefruit, quince, dried sage and wild mint. Fine mineral notes on the palate, developing elegantly with notes of lemon curd. The balance is marvellous. Seamless. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Etna Bianco 2022 is smoky in the glass and excites the senses with a burst of crushed rock and raw almond before transitioning into a citrus-influenced peach. It is pleasantly soft and enveloping, with weighty textures lifted by vibrant acidity. Mineral fruit and sweet spices meet on the palate. The 2022 finishes remarkably fresh yet grippy and long, leaving the mouth wanting more. The complexity of this wine is unrivalled for an entry-level Etna Bianco. Delicious!" Vinous
"This crackles with an underpinning of salinity, working with vibrant acidity to buoy a well-meshed profile of apricot tart, persimmon, mandarin orange peel, chamomile and chopped almond flavors." Wine Spectator
"It shows attractive flavours of citrus and stone fruit with a hint of mussels, with stony and ashy undertones. Medium-bodied, tangy and fresh with lively acidity and a polished mineral backbone. Steady and concentrated with a crisp finish." James Suckling
"Bright and pithy on the nose, with notes of stone and peach. In the mouth, it's very savoury and juicy, vertical and pithy, with a lovely softness of yellow fruit with floral hints leading to a long, stony finish. So light on its feet yet intense in flavour, with a body that melts away and makes you want another sip." Decanter

“Le Vigne Niche Santo Spirito” Bianco Etna DOC 2022 (BIO)
This Carricante from vines up to 100 years old from a small single vineyard gives no indication of its varietal and terroir origins. Fine fruity aroma, mineral and with a fresh sea breeze. Powerful, well-structured, a fine woody note, balanced and long flavour. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Etna Bianco Le Vigne Niche Santo Spirito rises from the glass with a savoury blend of crushed green apples, wet stones and a hint of chamomile. The wine is silky and soothing, with flavours of ripe apricot and nectarine accompanied by sweet herbs and a hint of candied lime, carried by a lively acidity. The finish is long and lightly textured, leaving a mineral note and traces of Asian pear that slowly fade. I usually consider the Santo Spirito to be the more open and accessible Bianco from the Terre Nere portfolio, but in 2022 it holds its power in reserve." Vinous
"Santo Spirito Bianco is floral and light, with a distinct breeze of citrus, seashells and salt. Concentrated and intense, with a juicy, savoury attack, it is packed with citrus peel, white peach and flowers, yet remains light on its feet, stony and vertical. Soft and long." Decanter
"A very nice and typical white top Etna with aromas of dried apples, lemon shrub and lemongrass that develop into a medium to full body, with a nice fruit core and lots of undertones of nougat, lemon curd and ricotta. Multi-layered." James Suckling

Limitation of 3 articles per customer“Le Vigne Niche Contrada Montalto” Bianco Etna DOC 2022
This single-vineyard Carricante comes from the small Montalto vineyard on the southern slope of Etna at an altitude of around 950 metres. It is the most balanced and at the same time most exciting of all Etna Bianco from Terre Nere in terms of its overall impression and flavour; the whole Etna package is present here in exactly the right dose: Minerality, salinity, fruitiness and a perfect hint of orange peel and flint on the nose. On the palate, it is vibrant and fine, with an almost Burgundian dimension, full of finesse and length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lovely dried apple and lemon with some mineral and stone character both on the nose and palate. It also shows some pumice. Medium body. Crisp and multi-layered." James Suckling
"It is soft, fleshy and peachy in flavour, yet with excellent acidity. Notes of stone and pineapple add vibrancy to this delicious, flavoursome white wine with no alcohol content." Decanter
"Spicy and full of tension, the 2022 Etna Bianco Le Vigne Niche Montalto bursts from the glass with a blend of lemon zest, minty herbs, young peaches and crushed rocks. This opens with a pretty inner sweetness and crisp minerality, rushing the palate with ripe orchard fruits elevated by candied citrus. The Montalto finishes with fantastic length and potency, lightly structured and tactile. This gorgeous Etna Bianco is drinking beautifully today yet with the balance to promote medium-term cellaring." Vinous

Fantastic Etna crescendo from vines up to 60 years old from a small single vineyard with wonderfully balanced iodine and citrus flavours. Softly flowing on the palate, profound in flavour, the fine acidity, inner sweetness and delicate woody notes are well integrated into the overall concept designed for a long ageing period. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lots of honeysuckle and cut lemon with some crushed stone. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture and focused phenolics that add nice texture and length. Some flint on the finish." James Suckling
"This cru bottling from vines in Randazzo is youthfully creamy and offers little flavour other than that of the wood in which it has rested, along with stony patches of mango and peach. This Carricante is full, concentrated and highly acidic. It has enough earthy yellow fruit - such as pineapple, nectarine and yellow plum - to underpin its stony and acidic backbone; a vertical yet full style that will gain power and weight with age. Impressive." Decanter
"With a bouquet like chiseling through sheer limestone with all of the smoky and flinty nuances that come with it, the 2022 Etna Bianco Le Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana is impossible to ignore. It’s silky upon entry yet quickly builds with mineral tension. A savory, sweet interplay of citrus and spice offsets ripe nectarines and apricots. The 2022 leaves the palate reeling with youthful tension and watering for more as it finishes with outstanding freshness. This may not be the longest-lived Calderara Sottana Bianco, yet there’s no rush. It’s a total charmer." Vinous

Here comes a fairly new single-vineyard wine, similar in style to Santo Spirito, but with an "autumnal" component. Light ruby red, gravel, vanilla and a subtle hint of mint on the nose, plus some cranberry and cherry. Then fresh and exciting on the palate with a sweet and sour component and a delicate bitter vein. Compact tannin that certainly deserves a few more years of bottle ageing. The final is herbaceous, spicy and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"This is the third vintage made by Tenuta delle Terre Nere as a vineyard-designate wine, although Moganazzi has been farmed since 2009. The 2020 Etna Rosso Moganazzi shows a fun trajectory with grippy fruit tannins that lean into silky sensations over the palate. In fact, an appropriate word to describe this wine is caressing. The bouquet offers bright cassis, herb, flower and crushed stone. This site is located between Passopisciaro and Solicchiata at 700 to 730 meters in elevation. It offers a bit more volume and concentration in terms of mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"It shows dark cherries, dried flowers, bitter cocoa, slate, nutmeg and mocha. It is medium to full-bodied with firm, creamy and very well integrated tannins. A lot of power. And yet everything under control. Long lasting. Only 4,000 bottles. Already fantastic, but even better after 2023." James Suckling

“Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose smells of roses and small red berries. It is a heavy, tannic wine that requires a little patience, but finds its balance with time. A wine of exceptional finesse and great intellect. SUPERIORE.DE
"The tannins of this lively red wine are snappy and combine with a bright blend of wild cherry, boysenberry, tea rose and star anise, ending in a firm, mineral finish." Wine Spectator
"Offers a lovely rich fragrance of blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry and herbs. Rich and silky, it combines fruit forwardness with lip-smacking sapidity in a glorious way, backed by fine, ripe, grippy tannins, an undertow of fresh acidity, and some licks of wood and spice on the long finish. Lovely." Decanter
"Pure cherry fruit, reminiscent of kirsch, with orange peel and an ashy, mineral backbone, almost like flint or gunpowder. Similar aromas and flavours both on the nose and on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, very tense and firm with chalky tannins and a lingering sense of crushed granite and rock on the palate. Also mussel shells. Long. Try after 2025." James Suckling

"The 2021 Etna Rosso Moganazzi is very delicate and restrained. It unfolds slowly with a nuanced blend of incense, dried roses and exotic citrus fruits. It is supple, round and medium-bodied, with a zesty acidity and a crystalline core of minerals that slowly support the tart wild berry fruit. The finish is a little short but effective, leaving a bitter raspberry note and grippy tannins that tug at the cheeks." Vinous
"Sparkling, brightening ruby red colour. Fragrant, playful nose, lots of raspberries and blackberries, followed by violets and a hint of lemongrass. Extremely juicy and fruity on the palate, ripe, fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, spicy, mouth-watering final." Falstaff
"A spicy skein of graphite, ground white pepper and clove winds through flavors of ripe black cherry and black raspberry fruit in this red, with accents of sassafras, red licorice and tar. A crisp frame of well-integrated tannins and bright acidity carries the expressive profile through the lasting finish." Wine Spectator
"Fleshy red and black cherry aromas with some cocoa and balsam make for an enticing wine. In the mouth it's rich and intense, with good acidity injecting freshness into the black cherry, blackberry, violet and cocoa palate. The tannins are fine and grippy, clearly evident on the cheeks, supporting the concentrated, precise core. Full and delicious." Decanter
"It has a fresh and fragrant nose with beautiful cherries and raspberries as well as rose petals, liquorice and crushed stones. On the palate, it is firm and straightforward, with a medium body and lively acidity. It's hard to draw a line between the tannins and the earthy, mineral aspect, as both create a chalky mouthfeel and lead to a long, textured finish. I like the finesse of this wine, although it is still quite dense and firm." James Suckling

Limitation of 3 articles per customer“San Lorenzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
The Cru San Lorenzo, which is strictly limited in each vintage, comes from 4 hectares of vineyards in the district of the same name in the town of Randazzo. The vines are over 70 years old and grow around 750 metres above sea level; the soil consists almost exclusively of fine volcanic sand. The terroir in the small Contrada San Lorenzo was created by lava flows and deposits of volcanic origin that were formed between 60,000 and 15,000 years ago. This exceptional wine is particularly rich, fruity and has very soft tannins that make it velvety and luscious on the palate and ensure a never-ending finish. Magnificent! SUPERIORE.DE
"Mineral on the nose, with accents of stones, smoke and fresh earth, which merge into an expressive bouquet of ripe wild strawberries, cherry ice cream, dried thyme, graphite and fresh pepper on the full-bodied, creamy palate." Wine Spectator
"The 2021 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo seduces with a fragrant blend of roses, sour cherries, mandarins and a hint of cinnamon. This is pure elegance, lifted and refined, with dazzling acidity and a wave of pure, mineral fruit that crackles and pops on the palate. It is complex but truly delicious and retains its marvellous energy, even when a web of fine-grained tannins reminds the taster of its youthful state. Even today, the San Lorenzo 2021 is dreamlike and an absolute pleasure. That means the future remains very bright." Vinous
"This wine shows a very attractive, savoury character with red cherries and raspberries, accompanied by dried summer herbs, candied oranges and red spices. Also dry earth. Medium to full-bodied. Very even and seamless tannin structure. Refined and polished with a dusty earthiness that leads to a dry, delicate finish." James Suckling
"Intense, bright ruby red in colour with a brighter rim. Fragrant, compact nose, ripe fruit, strawberries and rosehips, followed by thyme and tomatoes as well as a hint of vanilla. Beguiling fruit and pronounced herbal flavours on the palate, precise and highly elegant, salty, great harmony between acidity and tannins, long final." Falstaff
"Fresh, floral and fragrant, it offers wafts of violet and lavender, cocoa, earth and black cherry. In the mouth its fine web of tannins and razor-sharp acidity provide tension for the ripe, balsamic hedgerow fruits to bounce off. Succulent and sapid with a very stony mid-palate, it displays excellent balance and depth, with incredible freshness and staying power." Decanter

Every year, one of the Tenuta's great single-vineyard wines, which represents the special terroir of the Etna hills in a highly complex way. Dark red fruit, orange peel and flowers on the nose. Then juicy fruit, wonderful depth and a finely chiselled tannin structure. A subtle spiciness on the finish and the outstanding structure, length and elegance are always present! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Vineyard shines from the moment the glass is tipped: Gravel, ash and sweet smoke give way to vibrant black cherries and autumnal spices. The 2021 Etna Rosso is elegant, silky and deeply textured, with salty mineral notes and an abundance of red and black fruits perfectly held by a core of vibrant acidity. The wine is complex yet full of energy and sultry depth, finishing salty and structured, with grippy tannins framing a lingering finish of liquorice and plums. These old vines have coped well with the dryness of the vintage, which is only evident in the hardness of the tannins. Otherwise, the 2021 is pure magic." Vinous
"This wine is more vibrant with red berries, blood oranges, light spices and a hint of terracotta. Medium-bodied, juicy and fruit-driven with tangy acidity and dusty tannins. A hint of bitter orange on the finish. Long and chalky, but now very attractive and enjoyable." James Suckling
"Brilliant ruby red colour with a brighter rim. Delicately fragrant and dynamic on the nose, with lots of floral notes, reminiscent of lavender and violets, some mint, followed by ripe rosehips and cherries. Ripe fruit and plenty of spice on the palate, compact and structured, gripping acidity and rich tannins, long, juicy final." Falstaff
"It offers a deep, full aroma of pure red and black fruits with some violet, spice, balsam and cocoa overtones. Fleshy, succulent and sapid, this is an incredibly beautiful Nerello Mascalese, with purity of red fruits underlined by some spice and stoniness, a hint of salinity and a long, silky, creamy finish. So inviting." Decanter

"Fresh, featuring rich hints of fig cake, fragrant smoke and iron that underscore the sun-dried cherry, thyme and rosehip notes. Light- to medium-bodied, with lightly chalky tannins." Wine Spectator
"Mediterranean brush, menthol and ripe dark fruit aromas waft out of the glass. Lithe and linear, the taut palate offers tart cherry, blood orange and licorice alongside fine-grained tannins. It closes on a hint of flint." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Moganazzi is spicy and intense, blasting up from the glass with crushed ashen stone, red currants, wild strawberries, sage and hints of cedar. It’s rich and pliant upon entry, yet quickly firms up through a mix of mineral-tinged berries, brisk acids and grippy tannins that arrive quite early and hold firm. That said, there is plenty of primary fruit and depth to balance, as it tapers off structured and long, leaving hints of licorice and inner rose to linger. This is only the third vintage of Moganazzi, which comes from steeply terraced 80-year-old vines at 650 meters on the north side of Etna." Vinous

"This charming red is well-balanced and fresh, firmed by fine-grained tannins and displaying a deftly woven range of wild strawberry and black raspberry, Earl Grey tea, rosehip, minerally stone and spice. Chewy finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo impresses with a dark and rich bouquet that pulls you close with notes of sugar-dusted plums, cloves, spiced citrus peels and hints of pine. It fleshes out across the palate with a salty mix of red berries and wild herbs, more lifted than anticipated yet potent. Grippy tannins mount toward the close. For all of its underlying power, the 2019 tapers off amazingly fresh, yet also structured, with a mix of inner violet and rose. Feudo di Mezzo combines both vivid fruit and the vertical build for a long and steady maturation." Vinous
"Dark spice, new leather, wild berry and eucalyptus are some of the aromas you'll find on this lovely red. Sleek and sultry, the elegant palate offers Marasca cherry, raspberry, cedar and star anise alongside lithe, fine-grained tannins. Enjoy through 2029." Wine Enthusiast
"A powerful Etna red with plenty of black-cherry and licorice character, plus a robust tannin structure. However, it also has a very exciting, cool and bright side, which comes out ever more clearly at the long, racy finish." James Suckling

"The 2018 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana keeps you at the edge of the glass, taking in its earthy yet gorgeous bouquet. Waves of crushed ashen stone, peppery herbs, blackberries and roses lift up effortlessly. This is silky in texture, with an unbelievably pure and vivid display of red fruits laced with salty minerals, as brisk acids create a sweet-and-sour tug of tension toward the close. The cheeks pucker, saturated with youthful tannin, as the 2018 Calderara Sottana clamps down hard, leaving only a hint of licorice and tart red berries in its wake. Close your eyes, and you might think this was a young, top-shelf Serralunga Barolo." Vinous
"So floral and fresh with cherries, watermelon, apples, crushed stone and flowers on the nose. It's medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins and fresh, vivid acidity that takes you down the palate." James Suckling

“Calderara Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2019 · MAGNUM
Every year one of the great single-vineyard wines of the Tenuta, representing in a highly complex way the special terroir of the high altitudes on Etna. Dark red fruits, orange peel and flowers on the nose. Then juicy fruit, wonderful depth and a finely chiselled tannin structure. A subtle spiciness on the finish and always present the outstanding structure, length and elegance! SUPERIORE.DE
"Aromas of French oak, camphor and Mediterranean brush lead the nose. Reflecting the aromas, the linear palate features coconut, vanilla, raw oak and cranberry before a saline finish. Taut, fine-grained tannins provide support." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana slowly blossoms in the glass, unfurling with a layered and deep display of black cherries, licorice camphor and pine. Further swirling unlocks balsam herbs, plum sauce and dusty rose. It rushes the palate with a wave of silken textures, filling the senses with red currants, blueberry and hints of candied citrus. Fine tannins emerge through the finale, previously masked by ripe inner fruits, making for a lightly structured finish. A salty flourish gives way to hints of graphite and black licorice that linger on and on. While I’m accustomed to Calderara Sottana being one of the more structured and backward wines from the Terre Nere portfolio, the 2019 possesses an early appeal that I find quite attractive. That said, there’s an underlying power here that only cellaring will unlock." Vinous
"If you love big Barolos, then this Etna red is a wine for you! Packed with ripe damson-plum character, this is rich, concentrated and well-structured with concentrated tannins that build on the moderately dry, silky finish." James Suckling
"Sottana lies on an ancient lava flow and hosts centenarian vines. Spice and graphite blends with aromas of violet, berry fruits and Mediterranean scrub. Long and dynamic in the mouth, with a splendid savoury note a flinty, mineral undercurrent and lithe, polished tannins. Captivating complexity." Decanter

“Prephylloxera” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Etna Rosso Prephylloxera Vigna di Don pepis a breathtakingly elegant, small-production Etna Rosso. Iridescent, pure dark red colour and an infinitely broad fruity aroma. Impeccable balance and structure on the palate. The tannins are present and yet wonderfully elegant and balanced. An explosive wine made from 100 per cent Nerello Mascalese - and from ancient vines in Calderara and Santo Spirito. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don pepCalderara Sottana is a feast for the eyes. The colour alone stuns the mind: a translucent ruby red that misleads the taster into expecting a delicate and lifted effort. The wine opens slowly in the glass, smoky and intense, with hints of ash and rosemary. A core of crushed wild berries and exotic spices comes to the fore. It is highly structured yet deceptively energetic, with silky waves of dark red fruit washing over the palate, leaving a salty hint of minerals and savoury herbs. A complex web of fine-grained tannins squeezes tightly and is balanced by a savoury residual acidity, while the inner flowers and a hint of tangerine slowly evaporate. Patience is required." Vinous
"This seamless, graceful red is long and supple, with a subtle, plump juiciness in the palette of red-hot cherries and dried raspberries, showing notes of fresh loamy earth, dried tea roses and thyme, dark chocolate and smoke. Fine-grained tannins firm up the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"Dusty and spicy with just a hint of orange peel overlaying some deep, dark berry scents, in the mouth it has a beautiful expression of sweet, concentrated balsam-laced red and black fruits showing levity and balance on a soft palate. There's floral depth to find here, given focus by the bright acidity, while the fine tannins cradle the succulent, joyous fruit. Persistent and vibrant." Decanter
"This wine has impressive depth and complexity with an array of red and dark berry flavours mixed with dark chocolate, ground spice and burnt orange peel. All these flavours lie on a bed of smoked, ashy, dark stone and wet asphalt undertones. Full and deep with very fine, silky tannins. So much tension and power here. It lasts for minutes and ends with a seamless, structured finish. From old vines from before the phylloxera plague. Try it now, but it will age beautifully. Best after 2026." James Suckling

You need good shoes if you want to go to your vineyards with Marco de Grazia. Best mountain boots. Because that's where you actually go mountaineering. Yeah, you could call it climbing in some places.
Marco de Grazia is well known in the international fine wine scene. You could say worldwide. He was one of the first in Italy to bring together several up-and-coming wineries and was thus able to achieve remarkable export successes. He was co-inventor and engine of the Barolo Boys.
In his constant search for good and authentic wines, he arrived in Sicily in 2002 and tasted Rosso dell'Etna - red wine from Etna. And was fascinated. From the wine, from the bizarre landscape with the black soils and from the introverted people who harvested there in many working hours the lowest yields of gnarled ancient wine trees. That's why there weren't twenty wineries left. Today there are ten times as many and wine from Etna is a sought-after speciality.
Marco and his brother Iano de Grazia, who joined in, are not innocent of this at all. Their commitment and fairly rapid success sparked the interest of some major wine producers, who eventually all invested around Etna.
The highest sites of the Tenuta delle Terre Nere stretch almost up to one third to the northern flank of the mighty towering and always smoking volcano Etna. From about 600 m up to almost 1,000 m above sea level. The higher, the steeper it gets. And rockier. The highest sites - called Contrade here - are real rock terraces. These "rocks" are black. Weathered lava. Hence Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The manor with the black floors.
You could write a book when Marco pulls his floppy hat into his face and starts telling stories. Because he has a lot to tell. From his locations, which he also likes to call "cru" and with which he draws comparisons with Burgundy. If one compares the wines, one also understands this, because "Rosso dell'Etna" from individual sites (Cru or here Contrade) could be understood as a combination of Barbaresco and Burgundy.
The winery is located on the northern slopes of the volcano, between Solicchiata and Randazzo. In the middle of the combed green of the vine rows on black soil lies the striking red house with the cellar. And here it is again, the comparison with Burgundy - "if one would compare the wine-growing area around Etna with Burgundy, then these sites would be here the Côte d'Or des Etna" says Marco de Grazia.
Already in his first vintages (2002) Marco de Grazia decided to vinify the individual "Crus" separately, because the soils and microclimates are so different. Even within a single small plot, which may have one hectare, the differences can be considerable due to the former eruptions and lava flows, the soils being of different ages - and a height difference of 200 metres.
Due to the altitude, it is relatively cool and always windy, even in midsummer. Offshore wind - after all, Mount Etna is 3,350 m high. And during the day the winds blow from the nearby sea across the land. All sites have been farmed organically since the beginning, some of them have been in organic farming for generations.
Feudo di Mezzo is the largest site in the region, which is why its volcanic soil is interspersed with various ancient lava flows. 600-700 m above sea level with 40-80 year old vines. The heart is called "Il Quadro delle Rose", from here comes a very elegant and complex Etna Rosso DOC, from Nerello Mascalese.
Caldera Sottana is the steepest and hardest rocky vineyard. Grapes - 50 to 100 years old - only 5 tons per hectare. 14 ha red (98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio) and 3.5 ha white (Carricante). A floor made of volcanic ash, black pumice stone and solid volcanic rock.
One hectare of it, divided into two small plots next to the cellar, is called "La Vigna di Don Peppino". These vineyards have survived the phylloxera and are still root true vines, more than 130 years old. A man cared for her all her life, for more than 70 years; without him they would hardly have survived. Today they are magnificent little trees. Low yield, but elegant and structured. Thanks to Don Peppino.
Santo Spirito is the most scenic location with a great view. At 700-760m above sea level, 40-100 year old vines grow on "younger" volcanic soils rich in nutrients and minerals. Around the vineyards grows a lot of green, meadows and wild herbs, and so are the wines from this location. Quite intense and finely spicy.
San Lorenzo is the "newcomer", but with sticks up to one hundred years old. 4 hectares of magnificent Nerello grapes on volcanic and rocky soils. At about 750 m above sea level you can reach mini yields of about 5 t/ha. These small berry grapes produce complex, finely structured and elegant red wines that are among the best in the region.
Guardiola is the highest "Contrada". One of the first vineyards to be purchased by Marco di Grazia and his brother Iano. 800 to almost 1,000 m above sea level, windy, cool, barren. Volcano, basalt, hard and steep. Extreme handwork, many hours of work for just three and a half to four and a half tons of grapes. This effort is only worthwhile for lovers, because they appreciate this herbal spice, this wonderful, clear dark fruit, structure and complexity, as well as elegance and potential for many years. SUPERIORE.DE
"The wines of Marco di Grazia have helped to put Etna at the top of the geological map. Its consistency in winemaking is one of the most important guarantees for the future of this up-and-coming wine region". Robert Parker
