The sibi et paucis project is Luciano's answer to the question of what time does to great Nebbiolo. While other wines are released on the market after the prescribed ageing period, Sandrone keeps some of his Barolo in his own cellar for ten years longer – not out of restraint, but out of the conviction that Nebbiolo only reveals its true nature after years of silent evolution.

The 2015 Le Vigne – the Barolo from four vineyards that has long since equalled the Aleste – shows, after a decade of additional ageing, why patience is the greatest virtue when dealing with Nebbiolo. Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli, vinified separately and combined in the final blend, have had a decade to integrate their tannins and refine their flavours.

In the glass, it is bright garnet red with orange-coloured reflections. The nose is complex: dried cherries, blackcurrants, truffles, tobacco and a hint of Earl Grey tea. On the palate, the wine shows the silky texture that only mature Barolo possesses: powerful yet elegant, with a polished tannin structure, earthy notes of forest floor and chocolate, and an endless final.
