The fact that the Barolo area, and indeed the whole of Piedmont, has become an important meeting place for gourmets and wine connoisseurs is due in part to the Conterno Fantino winery. Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino already came into contact with wine production in the heart of Piedmont through their own grandparents and parents. The resulting inspiration and many years of experience still characterize the winery's exceptional position in the Italian wine world today.
Guido Fantino states: "There is no mathematical formula for wine production. Each vintage is different and differs from the previous one. Without experience you won't get far". And the two estate owners have been able to gain a lot of experience in the meantime. When they founded their own winery together in 1982, they were considered "the young savages" who wanted to bring a new wind to the stagnating Piedmontese wine scene. They were one of the few winegrowers who, from the very beginning, were able to develop their wines according to individual vineyards. In addition, Guido and Claudio introduced pioneering innovations and methods early on, such as short macerations and low yields, which still define the finesse and elegance of this "modern" Barolo today.
The successful winery is located high above the small town of Monforte d'Alba in the province of Cuneo. From there you have an excellent view of the panorama of the Italian Eastern Alps. The ultra-modern operation is characterized by extremely low energy consumption and the constant striving for optimization - steps that the two business partners have pursued over the years, against all criticism. The impressive wine cellar is managed exclusively with renewable energy sources, and the winegrowing is based on sustainable cultivation of the vineyards.
Today 27 hectares of vineyards are planted with four grape varieties at different altitudes: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnay. Since 2012, the vines are organically cultivated. In the eyes of the two founders, the careful, manual selection of the grapes and the preservation of the typical characteristics of the varieties are decisive factors for a high level of quality. While Claudio Conterno is responsible for the work in the vineyard, Guido Fantino - once cellar master at Prunotto - takes over the responsibility in the wine cellar.
Ecological sustainability, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, low sulphite content and the careful use of French wooden barrels result in a unique wine collection every year. The Barolo wines from Conterno Fantino are now among the best in the region and (unfortunately) also among the most sought-after. They are rich in tannins, long-lasting and, due to the distinctive fruit, can be enjoyed young.
Through the combination of extensive experience, precision and attention to detail, Guido and Claudio have been able to enrich their portfolio over the years. Today this exciting task is also entitled to the following generations: Fabio and Elisa Fantino joined the company a few years ago. Soon the youngest, Noemi and Matteo Conterno, will also find their role in the family business and give the Conterno Fantino winery a great future. SUPERIORE.DE
