Monica Larner from Robert Parker's "The Wine Advocate" published her latest tasting notes of the last South Tyrolean vintages 2017-2020 these days. It shows that the wines are getting better (fresher and more complex) every year and that the South Tyrolean winemakers know very well how to parry the effects of climate change. But read for yourself:
"This is my annual report of exciting new releases from Alto Adige, the northern Italian wine region that each year moves closer to icon status, especially with regards to its phenomenal production of white wines. The report contains 234 reviews and half a dozen discovery producers, or wineries that have never before been reviewed in this publication. These new names are seriously worth your attention. The "three Cs" sum up the magic of Alto Adige's wines: These are crystalline, crisp and complex expressions from cool-climate, high-altitude mountain vineyards. They are an important part of the greater embroidery of vino italiano, yet the Alto Adige remains an autonomous region, not just from a political point of view but also in terms of its enological identity.
The Alto Adige landscape is characterized by the jagged peaks of the Dolomites and wide fertile valleys planted to grapevines, apples and other fruits. This is a view of the heart of the winemaking region between Trento and Bolzano. Alto Adige's vinous autonomy plays out in the grapes planted here, borrowing from both Latin and Germanic traditions, and from the way the wineries are structured. The region is highly linked to a cooperative approach in which dozens or sometimes hundreds of small growers band together under a single brand. There is economic power in unity, and Alto Adige remains an unparalleled example of the cantina sociale, or co-op. However, it is also home to plenty of boutique, family-run wineries that add to the energy and dynamism of the local wine community.
A string of excellent vintages is hitting the market now. This report contains mostly white wines from the 2020 and 2019 growing seasons and red wines from 2018 and the warmer 2017 vintage." MONICA LARNER (The Wine Advocate/Sept. 2021)
