Why produce gin, herbal liqueur and vermouth in the heart of the Langhe, in one of the most famous wine regions in the world? Quite simply because these products are an ancient local tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. Because distilled spirits, herbal liqueurs and vermouths have been produced by the Penna and Currado Vietti families for generations. Elena's family produced and sold them as part of their many years in the catering industry – mixology was tradition and everyday life for them. Luca's father Alfredo Currado worked as a cellar master for famous local vermouth and amaro producers in the 1950s before he and his wife Luciana Vietti took over the winery.
Elena Spirits was born from a deep-rooted desire: to carry the spirit of Piedmont out into the world, to share the passion for the Langhe, to live on a centuries-old tradition of exceptional flavours. The TIM23 – named after the Timorasso grape variety and the 2023 vintage – is Elena's white Vermouth di Torino Superiore, an intense and elegant flavoured wine based on Derthona Timorasso vintage 2023. The Currado Vietti family's challenge: to create a Vermouth that puts the almost extinct, rediscovered grape variety centre stage – refined with a selection of Piedmontese botanicals and natural herbs according to an old family recipe, which are only infused once ("one-shot" method). The botanicals – fresh and dried, finely chopped – are cold-extracted for three weeks to intensify the natural flavours. The Timorasso wine, alcohol and sugar are then added to the extract. Before the final maturation of 50 days, the vermouth is stabilised by cooling and filtered.
Straw yellow in colour. The nose is vinous, elegant and refined with notes of sweet orange, thyme, mint, gentian and vanilla nuances. The spicy component – very delicate – with hints of cinnamon. The perception of vermouth is clearly defined in the final. Vinous, fruity and extremely harmonious on the palate. Long, spicy persistence with a pleasantly sweet final. The significant vinous component – despite the use of traditional spices – increases in volume on the finish. A Vermouth di Torino Superiore – protected by guidelines that stipulate that at least 50% Piedmontese wines must be used and flavoured with herbs grown or harvested in the region. But Elena goes further: she uses 100% Timorasso, one of the most fascinating renaissance stories of Italian white wine. A tribute to tradition, true Langa style. SUPERIORE.DE
