![Cabernet Franc Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2023]()
Cabernet Franc Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2023
2023 was a year of contrasts in Friuli: Warm days, cooler nights and occasionally challenging weather conditions demanded sensitivity in the vineyard - but Cabernet Franc in particular benefited from this. The vines from the higher-lying plots in the Colli Orientali yielded perfectly healthy harvestwith lively acidity and clear flavours. The wine shows nuanced freshness on the nose: blackcurrant, green peppercorns, laurel and a fine balsamic note. Juicy and cool on the palate, with youthful tension, a slender body and a precise final. Not a loud performance, but a finely crafted red wine that impressively demonstrates the potential of this rare grape variety in north-east Italy. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Capsico" Rosso Colline Pescaresi IGT 2018]()
“Capsico” Rosso Colline Pescaresi IGT 2018
A wine with character and maturity: the pure Cabernet Franc Capsico Rosso comes from carefully selected plots in the Colline Pescaresi, where the interplay of sea breezes and cool nights produces powerful yet elegant red wines. The 2018 matured partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in wood - giving it structure, warmth and depth. Dark cherry, blackberry, cassis and a hint of balsamic spice on the nose. Soft and full-bodied on the palate, with supple tannins, a subtle herbal note and a juicy, mineral-accented finish. This is a very rare Cabernet Franc from Abruzzo with plenty of expression, substance and mature balance. SUPERIORE.DE

Cabernet Franc Costa Toscana IGT 2023 (BIO)
This is where Ampeleia's true masterclass is revealed: the Cabernet Franc from the single vineyard "Vigna dell'Asina" is the centrepiece of the "Monovarietali" project and shows why this grape variety has become the flagship of the winery. What began as a vision in 2003 has developed into one of the most precise expressions of the Tuscan terroir. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 500 metres and combines ideal conditions: Clay-rich soils interspersed with characteristic Galestro limestone rocks and Palombini formations create a unique microclimate. Contrary to the expectation that clay soils produce heavy wines, wines of surprising elegance and purity are produced here – a phenomenon that can only be observed in Roccatederighi. Vinification follows Ampeleia's purist approach: 20% of the grapes undergo carbonic maceration as whole bunches, the rest are destemmed. After two weeks of maceration, the wine matures for nine months in cement tanks – for nine months in cement tanks without the use of wood in order to preserve the varietal characteristics unadulterated.

The dark, seductive Cabernet Franc Poggio de' Colli takes its time in the glass and slowly awakens with a blend of redcurrants, peppery roses, exotic curries and a slight hint of musk that lends it gravitas. Velvety soft yet refined. Aristocratic and cool on the palate, with a powerful wave of tart raspberry fruit that feeds the palate with savoury spices and mineral notes. “Didacus” Cabernet Franc Sicilia Menfi DOC 2018
A Sicilian Cabernet Franc that can only be produced by Planeta – inspired by the elegance of great Bordeaux, yet deeply rooted in the terroir of the Menfi Hills. Didacus is a tribute to the family, named after Diego Planeta, the visionary founder of the winery. The grapes come from carefully tended plots on chalky soils, where they develop their aromatic ripeness and structure under the Mediterranean sun and fresh winds from the nearby coast. After fermentation, the wine matured for 21 months in French barriques before being left to rest for two years in the bottle.

Where the sun sets – campo di Tenaglia is located where the light last touches the steep slope before sinking behind the contours of the Val d'Orcia. This site covers just eight tenths of a hectare at an altitude of 500 metres, but what grows here on craggy limestone and coarse, sandy soil has an intensity that stands out even among Trinoro's crus. The soil is over two metres deep, the roots of the Cabernet Franc vines, which are over 25 years old, reach into the mineral, the skeletal, and give the wine its powerful character – and give the wine its powerful character. Tenaglia epitomises tension.

“Campo di Camagi” Cabernet Franc Toscana IGT 2023
Black as the night – is how Andrea Franchetti himself described this wine when it was first vinified separately in 2014. Campo di Camagi is the extreme pole in Trinoro's Cabernet Franc trilogy: where Magnacosta floats and Tenaglia stretches, Camagi condenses. One and a half hectares at an altitude of 550 metres, a flat, stony soil of crushed quartz and limestone – hardly any humus, hardly any depth. The vines, which are over 27 years old, fight for every centimetre, their roots penetrating the hard layer and completely filling the limited space. This struggle for space, this competition in the soil, manifests itself in the wine: concentration, density, heaviness. Twelve months in steel tanks, eight months in barriques, a further twelve months in concrete – a vinification that gives the wine time to organise its power without taming it.

“Campo di Magnacosta” Cabernet Franc Toscana IGT 2023
In 2011, Campo di Magnacosta was the first of three single-varietal Cabernet Franc crus that Andrea Franchetti created based on the realisation that his 20-year-old vines, with their deep root systems, are capable of precisely reproducing the distinctive flavours of each individual terroir. This 1.5-hectare parcel is located on the valley floor at 400 metres, where an old stream disappeared beneath the surface and ate into the slope – magna costa, the "eating slope" – and left behind river sediments of gravel and silt. The vines were planted over two decades ago with cuttings from a vineyard in Pomerol, where Cabernet Franc has been growing for three centuries. This deep, permeable soil gives the Magnacosta a character that is fundamentally different from its two siblings: The wine seems to bubble with energy, is complex and relatively light in colour, yet deep and straightforward with an airy, fresh appearance.

“Kappa Essenza” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016
The essence of chance. There are wines that are only created when the stars are right – and Essenza from Fattoria Kappa is one of them. In the language of physics, Kappa means the constant, but at this extraordinary winery on the border between Bolgheri and Maremma, chance reigns supreme. Only in exceptional years, when the Cabernet Franc grapes reach their fullest maturity and complexity, is this rare cru produced – a gamble that only a few winegrowers in Tuscany dare to take. 2016 was one such year of perfection. After a cool, damp winter and spring, July finally brought the longed-for heat and dryness. A welcome rain shower in mid-August cooled things down and paved the way for a textbook September: warm days, cool nights and the dramatic temperature fluctuations that allow Cabernet Franc to reach its peak. While other producers opted for tried and tested Bordeaux blends, Andrea Di Maio – the agronomist from Livorno and one of the three souls of Fattoria Kappa – went it alone with this capricious grape variety.

“Paleo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
Paleo Rosso - unmistakable Cabernet Franc and one of Bolgheri's most important wines, full of elegance and class. The name is unspectacularly derived from a weed that has long since been removed from the vineyards of Le Macchiole. Rich ruby red colour with violet reflections. Mint, white pepper, blackberry fruit and a hint of pomegranate on the nose. Finely melting on the palate with hints of tobacco and poppy seeds. Wonderfully structured and with a long final. French roots, Italian style
Cabernet Franc is one of the oldest and most important red wine varieties in Europe – by no means just a minor player in the shadow of the better-known Cabernet Sauvignon. As the parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, developed from a natural cross with Sauvignon Blanc, it has the potential for elegance, finesse and aromatic depth. In Italy, Cabernet Franc is increasingly appearing as a high-quality soloist; it is expressive, nuanced and emphasises the terroir.
Aromatically clear, structurally precise
Cabernet Franc has a fine and characterful aromatic profile: On the nose, there are notes of redcurrant, violet, green pepper, laurel and wet stone, often complemented by smoky or floral nuances. Compared to Cabernet Sauvignon, it is somewhat lighter in colour, less tannic and usually has a more lively acid structure. Especially in cooler growing regions, many winemakers emphasise the herbaceous freshness and aromatic precision, while in warmer regions, riper fruit aromas and a velvety depth dominate.
Friuli to Bolgheri – terroir diversity
In Italy, Cabernet Franc develops its potential particularly impressively in selected regions. In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, particularly in the Colli Orientali and Isonzo zones, delicate, mineral-rich wines with an often smoky undertone are produced. Producers such as Ronco del Gnemiz and Vie di Romans have established a style here that shows Cabernet Franc in its subtle depth. The variety is also proving its stature in Tuscany, especially in Bolgheri and Maremma. The "Paleo Rosso" from Le Macchiole, for example, has been one of Italy's great single-varietal Cabernet Francs for years, as has the biodynamically produced "Duemani Cabernet Franc", which impresses with its cool structure and aromatic clarity. Other exciting interpretations can be found in South Tyrol, Veneto and Umbria, where Cabernet Franc is more frequently integrated into cuvées. Other highly exciting protagonists can be found at the Tuscan wineries Ampeleia, Castello di Bolgheri, Tenuta di Trinoro, Tenuta di Biserno and Tenuta Meraviglia.
The grape variety is known under various names in Italy. In addition to the official name Cabernet Franc, it is also known as Cabernet Francese or simply Cabernet – which can lead to confusion with Cabernet Sauvignon in older vineyards. In some cases, it was not clear for decades which variety predominated in mixed plantings. Only modern genetic analyses have provided clarity here.
Culinary harmony with fresh flavour
Cabernet Franc is particularly versatile when paired with food. It harmonises excellently with grilled lamb, braised veal cheek or duck breast, as well as with mature cheeses such as Taleggio or mushroom dishes. Also Mediterranean vegetable cuisine. Fine lentils with herbs, ratatouille or baked aubergines, for example, benefit from its piquant spiciness and fresh acidity. The ideal drinking temperature is 16 to 19 degrees Celsius. Wines with wood ageing or longer bottle ageing also benefit from decanting and a generous glass volume.
From quiet accompanist to great soloist
An interesting aspect: Cabernet Franc is one of the few international grape varieties that can reach its full potential both as a cuvée partner in prestigious wines – such as Sassicaia – and as a single-varietal wine. Its expression always remains unmistakable: never intrusive, but with a lasting presence. Cinzia Merli, the pioneer behind Le Macchiole in Bolgheri, describes it aptly: "Cabernet Franc is not a by-product in Bolgheri, but a character in its own right; it brings elegance, finesse and structure like hardly any other grape variety".
