In 51 years of Il Marroneto, it has only happened three times. 2004, 2013 and now again with the 2020 vintage: a single barrel – botte number 18 – refused to follow the usual rhythm and demanded more time, more attention, more of everything. Alessandro Mori calls it "a monster" – not in the sense of brutality, but of wilfulness. A wine that refused to submit. "Fermentation with wild yeasts, without temperature control, was exceptionally slow and gradual." The wine matured for a total of 58 months in Botte no. 18. 16 months more than the regular Madonna delle Grazie. "Wine is not perfect," says Alessandro. "It becomes perfect with time. That's how it finds its true balance."
Deep purple in the glass with violet reflections. The nose is a mystery: black tea, incense, allspice, then wild blackberries, sun-dried tomatoes, undergrowth. The palate reveals that paradoxical combination that only the very greatest wines achieve: powerful yet weightless, concentrated yet fresh, complex yet with crystalline clarity. The tannins are as fine as sand, the acidity supports the wine like an invisible scaffold, the final fans out in nuances of sweet chestnut, liquorice and dark cherry – and there is no end to it. Only 150 magnums were filled. No coincidence, no marketing strategy – but the logical answer to the question of how much a single cask can give when there is everything. More than just a collector's item! SUPERIORE.DE
"A deep and smoky wine that’s multilayered and compact. The nose shows dried flowers, incense, licorice, graphite, restrained red cherries and pomegranates. Full-bodied, dense and velvety, it’s still youthful on the austere palate yet ripe and tight-knit with crisp acidity. Not ready to drink. Best from 2030." James Suckling
"The Mori family nailed it when they identified this single barrel of their Madonna delle Grazie cru and let it continue refining in cask for an additional nine months. Despite spending a full four-and-a-half years in wood, the 2020 is still incredibly youthful – starting with its opaque purple colour. Haunting scents are reminiscent of rambling through the forest; the wet mulchy floor, mushrooms and wild berries. Nuances of flint, lilac and tobacco are teasingly ethereal. Tense yet confident, it vibrates with scintillating acidity. Velvety tannins are tightly woven into the layers of crunchy brambles. It's exquisitely sculpted but will take years to divulge the full spectrum of its splendors. A true Riserva if there ever was one." Decanter
"The incredibly complex 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie Riserva takes its time evolving in the glass, drawing you in with nuances of black tea, incense and allspice. Further swirling invokes depths of dried black cherry, ashen stones and cinnamon. This is a textural masterpiece, weighty yet graceful, penetrating, tart and intense, all balanced by radiant acidity as masses of red fruit envelop the senses. The 2020 leaves the palate stained with primary concentration, finishing structured and long with the silkiest tannins imaginable. A tinge of pomegranate and clove fades over the course of a minute or more. Deceivingly approachable yet harmonious and balanced for the long haul, the 2020 Madonna delle Grazie Riserva is one of the most captivating wines I've ever tasted from Montalcino." Vinous
"he 2020 Riserva leans into a dark fruit spectrum with elegant aromatics and a profoundly silky texture. High phenolics were evident from the outset, prompting Alessandro Mori to call it “a monster,” yet the wine completed an extraordinarily slow and gradual fermentation lasting three and a half years, a rarity made possible thanks to native yeasts and the absence of temperature control. That long evolution has shaped remarkable texture and stability, finishing with generosity, freshness and a finely etched tannic lift. Full-bodied yet seamless, this is a true 360-degree wine, sensual, rich and deeply expressive." Wine Advocate
