“Flaccianello della Pieve” Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

Dark ruby red. In the compact fragrance dark berries, smoke, liquorice, tar and graphite. This opulence continues on the palate with mountains of juicy, ripe fruit and dense tannin. Fantastic Sangiovese elegance with high maturity and cult potential! SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark cherries, blackcurrants, brambleberries, eucalyptus, vanilla, tar, sandalwood and dried violets are the calling cards on the nose. This is certainly a very refined and delicate Flaccianello, that weaves its way through fresh dark fruit and layers of intricately wrought tannins. Delicious now, but better in 2022." James Suckling

"Ripe, with mulberry, plum, black cherry, mineral and spice flavors, this red is both lush and firmly structured. Complex, well-defined and persistent, courtesy of the racy acidity. Though balanced, this needs a few years to really knit together." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Flaccianello della Pieve is off the charts. Fresh, vibrant and explosive, with tremendous overall intensity, the 2016 possesses magnificent richness, with sumptuous fruit purity and simply unreal balance. Creamy, silky tannins add to the wine's sophistication and overall polish. The 2016 is dark, inky and powerful, but not at all heavy. Giovanni Manetti gave the 2016 18 months in French oak (75-80% new), followed by 6 months in cask. This is the first vintage in which a small amount (2%) of the wine was aged in amphora. In a word: stunning! Don't miss it." Vinous

"Fontodi's 2016 Flaccianello della Pieve is a masterpiece. This review represents a composite of notes from two separate tasting sessions, one at the winery and a second bottle tasted repeatedly over the course of 24 hours at my own pace. In the case of the second sample, it ended up in a blind flight next to the 2016 Masseto, and as beautiful as that Merlot-based wine is, this wine paints an even more beautiful portrait of a perfect Tuscan landscape, thanks to that tangy Sangiovese typicity. This vintage shows amazing depth and poise, with a sheer sense of elegance that comes from the undisputed quality of fruit achieved in this balanced vintage. The bouquet opens to dark cherry, blue flower and tilled earth. The tannins are taut, almost crunchy, and the wine offers profound pedigree and persistence that is driven by the evident acidity. That depth is what stands out most. This 2016 vintage includes a small part from clay amphorae for the first time. This slight change in the relationship of wine to barrel size has resulted in a more elegant and finessed wine." Robert Parker

“Vigna del Sorbo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2014 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC

The bouquet of red fruits, violets and graphite forms a synthesis of rare refinement. In the dense and rich, but very fine taste, an extremely interesting tannin component emerges, which, however, does not touch anywhere. A Riserva that shows a high level of professionalism and is also organically grown. SUPERIORE.DE

"An elegant version, with a keen edge of tannins underlining the pure cherry, blackberry, leather and earth flavors. Turns more polished with air, finishing up with a hint of bitter almond." Wine Spectator

"I tasted the 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo the day before it was to be bottled. The time the wine spent in barrique was shortened slightly to compensate for the delicate quality of fruit produced in this cool vintage. This 2014 edition is aged in barrel for 20 months, compared to 24 months for a warmer vintage such as 2012. The wine’s time in botte grande was extended to four months (instead of the usual one month usually employed) to afford more time for complete integration. The age of the Vigna del Sorbo vines is old enough to protect the plants from extreme temperatures. The vines are comfortably in their production prime. The fruit is balanced and bright with lively cherry and raspberry flavors followed by ethereal tones of crushed mineral, blue flower and balsam herb. Although the wine sports less overall volume, the finish is extremely polished and fine. It should flesh out further over the next year." Robert Parker

"A powerful, structured wine, the 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo won't be ready to drink for a number of years, much less be at its best. In recent years, the Sorbo has been much more forward, but the 2014 is decidedly austere and ungiving. Graphite, smoke, black cherry, plum and licorice notes infuse the dark, mysterious finish." Antonio Galloni

"Solely owned by Fontodi, Vigna del Sorbo is a 40-year-old parcel within their Panzano property. Until 2012 it included a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, but is now made entirely from Sangiovese. It is aged in equal percentages of new and used barriques. While the 2014 needs time to come around, it won't be the longest-lived vintage, but it's an excellent wine with good cellaring potential. It's smoky and quietly alluring, with hints of balsam, truffle and baking spice. Layered without being lush, it is also sternly tannic." Decanter

"A wine that leaves no questions unanswered, but simply invites you to sit back and enjoy. Everything appears crystal clear and transparently defined, the fruit interacts with elegance and creamy juiciness, powerful appearance, all-round success". Weinwisser

"Lustrous deep ruby. Very closed and brooding. Bags of ripe fruit on the palate, but spectacularly balanced. Huge focus as well as concentration. One for the cellar." Jancis Robinson

"This is concentrated and monolithic, with blackberry and black cherry flavors augmented by tar, tobacco and iron notes. Offers excellent potential, but needs time to absorb the tannins. Powerful, showing fine length." Wine Spectator

"Fontodi's Vigna del Sorbo sits in front of the estate. Southwest facing on galestro soil, the vineyard totals 8ha at an altitude of 450 metres. First produced in 1985, it has been designated as a Gran Selezione since the 2010 vintage. Initially closed, this expands slowly with nuances of red cherry, currants, earth, sage and liquorice coming into clear focus. The palate is well-endowed with compact fruit that has effortlessly absorbed the oak and maintained its integrity. The tannins are vigorous yet harmonious, making for a powerful wine that manages to remain elegantly poised." Decanter

"What a nose of clay, earth, crushed stones, rose petals, red licorice, baking spices, tar and Chinese spices. The level of sophistication to the red-fruited core, laser-sharp acidity and polished tannins, which grip and caress the palate, make this the greatest Chianti Classico ever made by Fontodi. From organically grown grapes. A long, long finish." James Suckling

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo (100% Sangiovese) is a wine that inspires a deep, deep breath into your glass. There's so much to take in and admire. So where to start? First, the wine shows a beautiful appearance that is thick and dark but allows for just enough ambient light to make it shine with ruby rays from deep inside. Then you have the bouquet that presents a solid wall of interwoven and ultimately beautifully balanced aromas. There is dark fruit, tobacco, leather, spice and polished river stone. Lastly, the mouthfeel reveals a similar level of extreme flavor equilibrium with very fine but still very young tannins. That mid-weight structure, matched to the wine's natural acidity, is a major guarantee of longevity." Robert Parker

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is flat-out stunning. Rich, ample and seductive, with tremendous intensity, the 2015 will go down as one of the truly epic wines of the year. All the elements come together in a deep, sensual Chianti Classico loaded with class and personality. I would give the 2015 at least a few years in the cellar to shed some baby fat, but it is very clearly a tremendous wine in the making, and even more impressive than it was last year. Wow!" VINOUS

“Vigna del Sorbo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2011 (BIO) · Double-MAGNUM in OWC

Vigna del Sorbo 2011 is already pleasing alone with its full, powerful ruby red. With a clear, intense fruitiness, to which herbaceous notes are added, it captures the nose before the wide, consistent taste and the straight, flawless finish begin. An excellent harmony between structure and elegance and already one of the biggest Gran Selezione of the new 2011 vintage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep dark, rich ruby with violet shimmer. Intense and dense nose, smells of blackberries, tobacco and sandalwood, multi-layered. Very dense and substantial on the palate, shows ripe fruit, then starts with dense tannin with supple core through, as if formed from a strand, very long aftertaste."Falstaff

"This is so layered and complex with dark chocolate, mineral, wet stone and black cherry character. So much fruit and polished tannins in this wine yet tight and composed. It needs another three to four years to completely open and show what great quality it truly has."James Suckling

"Black stone fruits, smoke, tobacco, incense and sweet spices jump from the glass in the 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo. The 2011 is going to need a few years for the baby fat to melt away. Today the flavors are ripe, dark and resonant, while the tannins are quite silky, but the best is yet to come. Even with all of its richness, the 2011 clocks in with acidity above 6%, which is virtually unheard of for a wine with this much dry extract, but, then again, we are talking about Sangiovese."Antonio Galloni

    • "Flaccianello della Pieve" Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO) <br>Double-MAGNUM in OWC

“Flaccianello della Pieve” Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO) · Double-MAGNUM in OWC
