Between 23 and 29 September 2024, JR roamed seven districts of Naples. Seven days, seven neighbourhoods, 606 portraits. The photographer and street artist JR – born in 1983, known for his monumental black-and-white installations in public spaces around the world – had chosen Italy for the first time for the eighth instalment of his Chronicles series. And with Naples, the city with the most complex, contradictory and yet most beautiful identity in the country. The question he posed: Chi sei, Napoli?

The result is a monumental photographic mosaic on the façade of the cathedral – 606 faces from 606 conversations, pieced together to form a single image of the city. Identity, resilience, community. JR entrusted this photograph to Feudi di San Gregorio to create a limited-edition bottle, the proceeds of which will go entirely to the Fondazione di Comunità San Gennaro – that foundation which has been working for years in the Rione Sanità, the neighbourhood beneath the cemetery that embodies Naples’ raw character and beauty. The wine featured beneath this image is a Greco Metodo Classico Blanc de Blancs from small vineyards in Tufo, Santa Paolina and Montefusco – that volcanic hilly region of Irpinia where the Greco takes on its most distinctive, mineral-rich form. Aged on the lees for 42 months, to be disgorged in 2025. Just 2,000 bottles.

The bubbles rise finely and evenly. The bouquet offers fresh citrus zest, white flowers, brioche, and a mineral depth – complex and imbued with great inner tranquillity. On the palate, it is precise and carried by lively acidity, with a long, clear, slightly salty-mineral final. An exciting spumante that bears the mark of Naples – and answers the question.
