Eisacktaler Müller Thurgau Alto Adige DOC 2024
This characterful Müller Thurgau, which embodies the cool elegance of South Tyrol's north-easternmost growing region, comes from the high vineyards at the beginning of the Eisack Valley and on the Ritten at an altitude of 600-700 metres. The Isarco Valley, where sunny, warm days follow cool alpine nights, offers ideal conditions for this sophisticated cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale with its mineral-rich, sandy and gravelly soils. The grape variety, named after the Swiss botanist Hermann Müller from Thurgau, finds the best conditions here on warm hillside terraces with a delicate soil structure. The harsher climate with increasing altitude and the marked differences in temperature give the wine the freshness and variety of flavours that make it so popular.

Müller Thurgau Alto Adige DOC 2024
Professor Hermann Müller's legendary cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royal finds its alpine perfection on Andrian's calcareous dolomite soils between 500 and 700 metres. The east-facing slopes provide the temperature-sensitive grapes with morning freshness. Temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, followed by six months of ageing on the lees, provides additional texture.

Müller Thurgau Alto Adige DOC 2024
A white wine from the heights. Peter Zemmer's Müller Thurgau thrives at 800 metres above sea level on terraced slopes in the South Tyrolean lowlands. The cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royal – named after the Swiss botanist Hermann Müller from the canton of Thurgau – finds ideal conditions here on calcareous gravel soils from moraine sediments. The exposed altitude, gentle slope and optimal sunlight ensure that the grapes ripen slowly and evenly.

The Palai area is one of the most representative areas for the production of Müller-Thurgau in Italy due to its microclimatic characteristics and the influence of the Cembra and Isarco valleys. In order to preserve its varietal characteristics (aromas and natural antioxidants), the grapes are processed using the hyper-reduction technique (in the absence of oxygen) developed and patented by the company.

One grape variety bears the name of its creator: in 1882, Hermann Müller crossed Riesling Renano with Madeleine Royale in Thurgau, Switzerland. The globetrotter only found his true home in the Alps – nowhere does Müller Thurgau thrive better than in the Val di Cembra, where terraced steep slopes between 500 and 800 metres above sea level combine porphyry soils with extreme day-night fluctuations. It is precisely these grapes that Nonino chooses for one of its rarest cru grape brandies. Unlike grappa, the whole fruit is distilled here – peel, pulp and juice together – using the method that Benito and Giannola Nonino invented in 1984 and christened ÙE: Friulian for grape. Fermentation takes place anaerobically in stainless steel, distillation slowly in copper steam stills.

The exposed location of the estate on the Fennberg at around 1,000 m above sea level, with late autumn morning dew and high humidity, provides the ideal conditions for the development of noble rot (botrytis cinerea), which naturally leads to an additional concentration of grape sugar. The raisin-like dried grapes are harvested from mid to late December. After gentle pressing of the grapes, alcoholic fermentation takes place in small steel tanks, where the young wine rests on the fine yeast for around six months. The bottled wine matures in the cellar for another five years.

Müller-Thurgau: alpine lightness
Müller-Thurgau originated in Geisenheim at the end of the 19th century, but it was only in Italy that the grape variety found its special form of expression. Trentino and South Tyrol in particular recognised its potential early on. It thrives at altitudes between 500 and 900 metres in a climate that gives it freshness, fragrance and tension. While in many countries it is considered a rather uncomplicated variety, in Italy's mountain regions it displays a precision that surprises: clear flavours, cool structure, fine herbal accents.
Where Müller-Thurgau shows character
The most important growing areas are in Trentino, around Cembra, Faedo and the plateaus above Trento. In South Tyrol, for example in the Isarco Valley, wines with delicate acidity and a fine mineral profile are produced. The variety was long known internationally under synonyms such as Riesling-Sylvaner or Rivaner, but in Italy Müller-Thurgau has established itself as a regional speciality in its own right. The Alpine locations in particular, with their porphyry soils, cool nights and intense sunshine, characterise the typical style: fragrant, bright, crystalline.
Italy's high altitudes as a stage
It is above all the mountain winegrowers in Italy who show what Müller-Thurgau can do. Producers such as Cantina Terlan or Kellerei Tramin in South Tyrol focus on precision, clarity and a balanced acidity. In Trentino, for example, Pojer e Sandri characterises the image of a wine that combines lightness with depth. Whether matured in stainless steel or with brief contact on the fine lees, Müller-Thurgau gains expression here without losing its accessible, charming nature.
Fine flavours, clever companions
The Müller-Thurgau grape variety is an ideal accompaniment to fresh cuisine: trout, zander, marinated vegetables, light pasta dishes or mild goat's cheese. It is also surprisingly harmonious with Asian-inspired cuisine, for example with ginger, lime or fresh herbs. It is best served at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, more complex varieties can also tolerate 11 degrees. It is particularly appealing on warm summer days outdoors, where its lightness and aromatic clarity come into their own.
A voice from the mountains
The South Tyrolean winegrower Mario Pojer once put it like this: "Müller-Thurgau is like a walk at dawn. Clear, fresh and full of fine flavours." An image that aptly captures the alpine soul of this grape variety. Hardly any other variety transports the cool elegance of its origin so directly into the glass.
And a glance at the range shows: This freshness comes in many guises. From taut, mineral interpretations to fragrant, light, almost dance-like variants, Müller-Thurgau from Italy surprises, delights and suits an infinite number of occasions. If you want to discover the alpine side of Italy, Müller-Thurgau is a subtle ambassador: clear, precise, cool, aromatic and surprisingly versatile. SUPERIORE.DE
