VINOUS | Italy's best sparkling wines

Italy's sparkling wines have undergone a remarkable development in recent years. Origin, structure and ageing ability are now clearly in the foreground. The latest report by Vinous author Eric Guido categorises this dynamic as historic. Never before has the stylistic range of high-quality Italian sparkling wines been so broad, particularly in the case of classically fermented qualities. Four appellations exemplify this new class.

Franciacorta DOCG is regarded as a reliable benchmark. Sparkling wines with depth, elegance and clear prospects for ageing in the bottle are produced around Lake Iseo. Long ageing on the lees and strict production specifications ensure consistency and longevity that have long been recognised internationally.

Trento DOC represents alpine precision. The high altitudes and cool climate give the wines tension, freshness and a firm structure. With increasing maturity, the best examples gain additional complexity and expression without losing their clarity.

Alta Langa DOCG remains an insider tip for many. Only vintage-related and with at least 30 months of ageing on the lees, serious, broodingsparkling wines are produced here that need time and benefit from it. Patience is rewarded with depth, substance and character.

Prosecco Superiore DOCG shows its most sophisticated side in the UNESCO-protected core zone of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Steep slopes and careful selection produce wines that combine origin and balance. The best qualities prove that Prosecco can also have structure and development potential.

Together, these appellations show how versatile and mature Italy's sparkling wine landscape is today. They are wines with an identity that accompany festive moments as well as delighting connoisseurs.
