Vermentino sounds like sun, sea and a salty breeze. Hardly any other white grape variety in Italy transports Mediterranean lightness so directly into the glass. Sometimes fresh and lively, sometimes mineral and serious, but always with unmistakable elegance. "Vermentino is a summer wine that is best enjoyed cold on the beach. Its more ambitious variants often have remarkable ageing potential, which is sometimes enhanced by oak or amphorae. It is worth noting that Maremma introduced the designation "Superiore" in 2023: The wine must consist of at least 95 per cent Vermentino, the yield is limited to nine tonnes per hectare and it may be sold no earlier than 1 January of the second year after the harvest. In addition to Maremma, the most important areas for growing Vermentino in Italy include Gallura in north-east Sardinia, Colli di Luni in north-west Italy, the Apuan Mountains in the north of Tuscany and Bolgheri. Gallura has sandy soils of decomposed granite, rich in minerals and constantly exposed to the winds of the Strait of Bonifacio. Colli di Luni and the Apuan Mountains benefit from calcareous soils that give the wines a mineral elegance – just a stone's throw from the marble quarries of Carrara. (...)
