In the western heart of Chianti Classico, between Florence and Siena, lie the four historic vineyards of Castello di Monsanto: Il Poggio, Scanni, Il Mulino and Il Salcio. On 72 hectares between 280 and 320 metres above sea level, surrounded by a Mediterranean biotope of cypresses, junipers, brooms and strawberry trees, predominantly Sangiovese vines thrive on the characteristic Galestro soils – the slate-like rock that gives the wines depth and powerful characteristics. The Bianchi family has consistently favoured the quality of Sangiovese for over 60 years and created the first Chianti Classico cru in 1962 with Il Poggio. The Annata is made from a selection of grapes from the younger vineyards, which are particularly suitable for ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels. 90% Sangiovese is complemented by 10% Canaiolo and Colorino – a classic blend that combines freshness and accessibility with the characteristic depth of the Monsanto terroir.
The result is a wine with a ruby red colour. Blackberries, raspberries, tomato leaves, lemon peel and bark on the nose, also some tar and crushed stones. Medium-bodied on the palate with fine, slightly sturdy tannins. Beautiful character of rose petals. Fresh and mineral on the finish, very successful every year! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red colour with a violet hue. The nose is fragrant with small berries, reminiscent of raspberry, blueberry and strawberry. Some lavender on the finish. Balanced on the palate with spicy notes and pleasant tannins." Falstaff
"Fleshy and tangy, featuring cherry, cranberry, menthol and flint notes. Dense, dusty tannins flex on the long finish. This is engaging and full of personality." Wine Spectator
"The 2023 Chianti Classico is terrific. A model of classicism, the 2023 impresses with its balance. Crushed flowers, sweet red-toned fruit, spice, rose petal and cinnamon open with a bit of coaxing. In 2023, the straight Chianti Classico is an absolute delight, a wine that captures the essence of the house style at a very affordable price." Vinous
"Intense and meaty on the nose, this wine offers ripe red and dark berries alongside roasted spices, savory notes and hints of wet stones. It is structured and compact, with a medium to full body that shows a vivid, ripe core of fruit. Tightly wound and slightly chewy at the end. Well-made and potent." James Suckling
"Flint, graphite and wild purple flowers entice on the nose, and the palate pops with fruit purity. Dark bramble berries are underscored by succulent acidity, and silky tannins grip subtly as this lingers with zesty citrus. Just delicious." Decanter
"The nose blooms like a well-tended garden with aromas of wild strawberry, tomato leaf, top soil and rose petals. The cohesive palate adds a dollop of raspberry jam to more strawberries, soil and flowers, while bouncy acid keeps the energy high through a finish of dark chocolate and citrus. An immensely satisfying wine." Wine Enthusiast
