Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Venezia Giulia IGT 2024
Emilio Rotolo's Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso draws you into the glass with its deep, peppery black raspberry flavours, complemented by pretty violet and lavender tones. Wrapping the palate in a cloak of dark, ripe, textured fruit, it is incredibly elegant and polished, but also tangy. A layer of sweet tannins frames the expression and caresses the cheeks, while citrus fruit and a hint of spice linger. This is a very nice wine that will benefit from a slight chill. SUPERIORE.DE

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2023
A Friuli classic, here in an expressive interpretation à la Tunella: Refosco combines strength, fruit and regional flavour with a cool elegance. The vines are rooted in the calcareous Ponca soils of the Colli Orientali, which gives the wine structure and finesse. Ripe wild berries, sloe, a hint of violets and black pepper on the nose. Powerful on the palate, with fresh, invigorating acidity, firm tannins and juicy fruit. The vintage brings clarity and drinking pleasure without diluting the serious character of the variety. The finish is characterised by dark fruit, herbal spice and a hint of graphite. A stylistically balanced Refosco that brings origin and typicity to the glass with fine precision. SUPERIORE.DE

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso “Zuc di Volpe” Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2013
This mature Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso comes from the single vineyard "Zuc di Volpe" – a prime example of the ripening potential and aristocratic depth of this autochthonous variety. 2013 was a classic vintage: a cool spring, a moderate summer and a dry autumn allowed a late harvest of perfectly ripe grapes with a distinctive tannic structure and lively freshness. The wine was matured in large wooden barrels and barriques and then allowed to rest in the bottle for many years. Today it displays a multi-layered bouquet of dark cherry, blackberry, graphite, undergrowth and liquorice. Powerful and focused on the palate, with ripe tannins, savoury spice and a characteristic balsamic freshness that characterises the long finish. A hint of dark chocolate and a touch of iron add depth.

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2021
In the far north-east of Italy, where the Julian Alps meet the Adriatic Sea, one man once wrote wine history. Livio Felluga, affectionately known as "il contadino" by Luigi Veronelli, is considered the patriarch of Friulian wine culture. His family was already producing Refosco and Malvasia in Istria – when he came to Friuli at the end of the 1930s, he brought this heritage with him. The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, named after its characteristic red stems, is rooted in the flysch soils of the Colli Orientali, the interplay of marl and limestone that has produced the best red wines here for thousands of years. Twelve months in barriques give the wine depth without masking its origin.

Ronc di Vico's Refosco dal Peduncolo is a wine with rough edges - which is precisely why it is so fascinating. The autochthonous grape variety naturally brings depth, structure and an unmistakable flavour. The grapes come from old plots in the Colli Orientali, whose Ponca soils of marl and sandstone provide clarity and tension. The 2022 vintage offered ideal conditions for fully ripe, healthy harvest. After strict manual harvesting and a long maceration period, the wine matured for around 20 months in French barriques.

“Quar” Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2018
Quar 2018 is the first vintage of Antonio's single-varietal Refosco. It flows beguilingly and impressively into the glass with flavours of cherry, plum, olive and tobacco. Despite its unprecedented intensity and depth, it always shows harmony and a certain weightlessness, similar to a classic Amarone. Richness and velvety density right into the long finish, a wine with great potential. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Calvari" Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2020]()
“Calvari” Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2020
"Calvari" Refosco is Paolo Meroi's masterpiece - a wine that explores the potential of the autochthonous Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso to its limits and is only produced 2-3 times per decade. The grapes come from ancient, tiny, low-yielding vines in a tiny, south-west-facing plot above Buttrio. The barren Ponca soil, strict selection and uncompromising manual labour make this wine a true rarity. The 2020 vintage, characterised by a harmonious vegetation cycle with a balanced sun and rainfall profile, produced perfectly ripe, concentrated berries with exceptional aromatic tension. After manual harvesting and gentle mash fermentation, "Calvari" matured for 24 months in French barriques before maturing for a further two years in the bottle.

Refosco: flavour of north-east soil!
Refosco is one of the most authentic red wine varieties in northern Italy. Its roots go back to ancient times, but its modern history is closely linked to Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso in particular – recognisable by the red stem of the grape – is considered the most important variety today. Refosco has a deep ruby red colour in the glass, with a violet hue in more mature versions. The aroma ranges from dark cherry, blackberry and blackberry to violet, herbal spice and liquorice, as well as earthy and mineral notes. On the palate, it is powerful and structured, with present, fine-meshed tannins, lively acidity and an often surprisingly fresh core.
Regions, diversity and identity
Refosco is particularly at home in Friuli, in areas such as the Colli Orientali, the Isonzo and the Karst. It can also be found in Veneto, parts of Emilia-Romagna and in smaller quantities in Slovenia. Its style varies depending on its origin: in coastal areas, it has a more Mediterranean, warmer and rounder flavour. In higher-lying or cooler plots, it shows tautness, minerality and impressive precision and depth. The variety has a distinct identity, but remains multi-faceted. It can be powerful and distinctive, but also elegant, full of finesse and surprisingly long-lasting. It is precisely this range that makes Refosco one of Italy's most exciting indigenous red varieties.
Where Refosco gains profile
The renaissance of Refosco is inextricably linked to ambitious winemakers who take the variety seriously and develop its potential in a differentiated way. In Friuli, producers such as Meroi, Ronco del Gnemiz and Livio Felluga demonstrate the depth that Refosco can achieve when yields are deliberately kept moderate and soils are carefully interpreted. Modern interpreters in the Isonzo also show a clear signature with a focus on structure, elegance and expression of origin. Ageing ranges from pure steel tanks to large oak barrels, whereby Refosco reacts remarkably sensitively: Wood is allowed to support, but never dominate. This results in wines that preserve regional identity and at the same time impress internationally.
Culinary stage & moments of pleasure
Refosco is a wine for a cuisine with authenticity and substance. It is an excellent accompaniment to game, braised beef, lamb, dark poultry, polenta with spicy sauces or mature hard cheeses. Its multi-layered acidity also makes it an excellent partner for rich dishes with herbs or mushrooms. Refosco is ideally served at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in large glasses to emphasise its aromatic depth. It is a wine for autumn and winter, but also a charismatic partner for enjoyable evenings when a glass of wine should be more than just an accompaniment: a statement.
A wine with personality
A pertinent thought from the region: "Refosco is not a wine that aims to please. It is a wine that shows attitude." Perhaps this is precisely where its fascination lies. Refosco is authentic, undisguised and full of character. A wine with personality that proudly bears its origins and at the same time appears astonishingly modern. SUPERIORE.DE
