!["Hill" Pinot Grigio Alto Adige DOC 2024]()
“Hill” Pinot Grigio Alto Adige DOC 2024
The hill. A solitary, 50-metre-high ridge south of Margreid, which gives the Pinot Grigio its name and character. The soil is unusual: grey, loamy sand with a high clay content – —no porphyry, no limestone gravel—but a soft, nutrient-rich deposit that gives the Pinot Grigio a richness and freshness that poorer soils simply cannot provide. Margreid’s Mediterranean climate – — warm summers, mild winters, and the afternoon ‘Ora’ breeze from Lake Garda – ensures the grapes ripen evenly and develop their aromas. Hand-harvested, clarified must, three weeks’ fermentation in stainless steel, five months on the fine lees.

!["Saxum" Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2024]()
“Saxum” Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2024
Saxum: the rock. A wine name derived from Latin that states quite simply what this Sauvignon grows on: Ice Age limestone soils, shaped and left behind by glaciers, with a minerality that gives the wine its unmistakable character. Not the volcanic depth of the Schlerngestein, but the bright, clear precision of Alpine limestone. Montan is best known as the home of Pinot Nero. The fact that Sauvignon Blanc of such high quality also thrives here is down to the very same conditions that lend the red wines their elegance: cool sites, good air circulation and well-structured soils. Pfitscher vinifies the Saxum in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of 18°C, with yeast ageing to develop texture and body.

!["Andrius" Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2023]()
“Andrius” Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2023
Andrius. Here, where in 1893 courageous winegrowers laid the first foundation stone of South Tyrolean co-operative history, a Sauvignon Blanc of rare strength and elegance is still produced today. The vines thrive on the calcareous slopes between 260 and 380 metres, where dolomite rock and Andrian porphyry characterise the terroir like two old friends who complement each other. It is the Mediterranean climate that shows its cooler side up here. Temperatures drop at night, allowing the vines to breathe. During the day, the South Tyrolean sun warms the stony soils – an interplay that gives the Sauvignon Bianco that special tension that characterises great wines. In the hands of cellar master Rudi Kofler, selected grapes from the oldest vineyards are turned into a wine of remarkable depth. Six months on the fine lees. Eighty per cent in stainless steel for freshness, twenty per cent in large wooden barrels for structure.

!["Fontanasanta" Nosiola Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2023 (BIO)]()
“Fontanasanta” Nosiola Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2023 (BIO)
In the gentle hills above Trento, where the Dolomites majestically watch over the Adige Valley, lies a vineyard called Fontanasanta, the "Holy Spring". Here, at an altitude of 400 metres and on calcareous clay soils, Elisabetta Foradori preserves one of Trentino's most precious treasures: the Nosiola, an ancient indigenous grape variety that was once at the heart of the region's wine culture but is now threatened with extinction. Only three hectares are dedicated to this rare variety. Nosiola, whose name is derived from the dialect word "nosela" for hazelnut, requires patience and sensitivity. In wet Alpine years, it can be capricious, but under Elisabetta's biodynamic guidance, it unfolds its full aromatic complexity. The vinification process follows the revolutionary Foradori philosophy: after hand-picking, the de-stemmed berries are placed in Spanish tinajas, where they ferment on the skins for eight months – a process that gives the Nosiola its characteristic golden yellow colour and structural depth. A short maturation in used acacia barrels rounds off the profile.

!["Vigna Kolbenhof" Gewürztraminer Alto Adige DOC 2022]()
“Vigna Kolbenhof” Gewürztraminer Alto Adige DOC 2022
Gewürztraminer is named after Tramin. This is not a marketing story – this is etymology. The name of the world's most famous aromatic grape variety bears the village itself, where Hofstätter has been based since 1907. And the Kolbenhof plot is located above Tramin, in the hamlet of Söll, on an eastern slope between 360 and 420 metres above sea level – one of the most historic estates in the entire village. This is where the Bolzano quartz porphyry slab meets the limestone of the Mendelzug. A geological interface that does not exist in this form anywhere else in the South Tyrolean wine-growing region. The soils with a high clay content absorb the warmth of the morning sun – the Kolbenhof is exposed to the east, protected from the midday heat – and slowly release it again. Cool, structured, elegant. This is the opposite of a sweetish mass-produced spiced Traminer: dryness with character.

!["Sgarzon" Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2023 (BIO)]()
“Sgarzon” Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2023 (BIO)
There are words that tell more than entire stories. Sgarzon: In the ancient dialect of Campo Rotaliano, it means "young shoot", "sapling" and embodies the essence of youthful vitality and the impetuous vigour of new beginnings. This name is the programme for a Teroldego that revolutionises conventional ideas of this powerful grape variety. Just one kilometre from the famous Morei vineyard as the crow flies, but completely different in character, is the 2.5-hectare Sgarzon vineyard. Here, the Noce River has deposited sandy sediments over thousands of years, creating a cooler, more open microzone. While other Teroldego vineyards are already harvesting their grapes, the Sgarzon berries ripen a week longer – a decisive difference that gives this wine its exceptional finesse.

“Morei” Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2023 (BIO)
Between light and shade, between strength and elegance, sometimes only a few hundred metres decide the character of a wine. Less than ten minutes' walk from Sgarzon, but geologically in a different world, lies Morei, "the dark one" in the old Trentino dialect. Here, on the warmer, rockier terrain of Campo Rotaliano, Elisabetta Foradori has been writing another exciting chapter in the Teroldego story since 1984. The name says it all: where Sgarzon embodies youthful freshness, Morei reveals the deep, mineral soul of this extraordinary grape variety. The 2.5-hectare plot rests on the ancient riverbed of the Noce, where thousands of years of erosion have left behind a mosaic of pebbles, sand and dolomite rock. This stony matrix stores the heat of the dolomite sun and releases it to the vines at night – a natural heat reservoir that gives Teroldego its characteristic depth and concentration.

Juvelo is the crown jewel of Andrian. A wine that only comes into being when nature plays its part. December in South Tyrol – while others have long since harvested their grapes, here a few Gewürztraminer vines are still waiting for the perfect moment. The grapes hang on the vine until they are clearly covered in noble mould. Botrytis cinerea, the "noble rot", perforates the grape skin and allows the water to evaporate. What remains is pure concentration. The harvest are picked by hand, berry by berry. There is no rush. The grapes are gently pressed, then fermentation begins in small oak barrels. This is followed by 11 months of ageing in barriques, time that this wine needs to develop its complexity.

“Anrar” Pinot Nero Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2022
Anrar is the answer to a simple question: what happens when South Tyrol's second most important red grape variety is given time in wood? While the classic Pinot Nero retains its freshness in stainless steel, Anrar takes a different approach. Approx. 12 months in French barriques for malolactic fermentation and further ageing. No wood show, but elegant integration. That makes the difference. But not alone: the best Pinot Nero vineyards around Andriano provide the grapes. Altitudes between 350 and 450 metres, where the calcareous clay soils are interspersed with dolomite rock. The cooler microclimate ensures slow ripening, more acidity and finer tannins. Perfect for a Pinot Nero with Burgundian ambitions.

Metodo Classico Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2019 brut nature
We are delighted to be one of the few retailers who receive a few cases of this finesse-rich sparkling wine every year. Brilliant pale yellow in colour, this clarity is also immediately apparent on the nose, where delicate fruit and citrus notes combine harmoniously with a refreshing minerality. On the palate, it has a pronounced elegance and finesse, supported by a freshness and precision that gives it great persistence. No dosage, less than 0.5g residual sugar, very convincing! James Suckling has just published his long-awaited South Tyrol Report 2025. Under the title "On the Brink of a New Leap Forward", he reports on the last three vintages and takes a look at the status quo and the changes in this dynamic wine region. As always, you will find an extract from the exciting travel and tasting report below:
"From the vineyards around Lake Kaltern to the slopes above St. Eppan, the vines are carefully pruned in early June, removing unwanted shoots and exposing the grapes to the mountain air. The aim is to maximise ripening depending on the soil and climate, but it is also a reflection of South Tyrol's identity: a region of winemakers obsessed with precision who have now perhaps found their signature grape variety in Pinot Bianco. This care in viticulture results in wines of exceptional quality – open and expressive, which not only reflect the character of each vintage, but also the speciality of the grape varieties grown in South Tyrol.
During our trip there in the summer, we tasted hundreds of wines from the region, visited wineries and spoke to producers to assess the last two or three vintages of South Tyrol, which is essentially a patchwork of sub-regions and small winegrowers. In total, we tasted almost 400 South Tyrolean wines. Many of these winemakers are small producers, sometimes too small to bottle their own wines, and form the backbone of a long-established co-operative system.
The figures are impressive: according to the South Tyrolean Wine Consortium, 4,800 winegrowers work here, organised into 160 wineries, most of which are cooperatives. These cooperatives account for 70 to 74 per cent of the total annual wine production of around 40 million bottles; private wineries account for around 25 per cent, and independent winegrowers for the rest. For all three categories of winemakers, the 2024 vintage was a challenge, at least for the red wines, as late frosts, hailstorms and uneven ripening led to harvest losses of 15 per cent to 70 per cent at some wineries. "2024 was a difficult year for red wines, but an excellent one for white wines, with rain during the harvest and little sunshine after 25 September," sums up Martin Foradori from the J. Hofstätter winery.
The year 2022 in South Tyrol was the opposite of 2024 and a pleasant surprise. While large parts of Italy suffered from drought, South Tyrol's pre-Alpine climate brought rich afternoon rains and a wonderful harvest. Wines such as the Terlaner I Grande Cuvée 2022 from Cantina Terlan – just below the exceptional 2021 – are proof of this. However, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius in 2022, the Pinot Noir grapes came under pressure, so the harvest had to take place up to two weeks earlier, between 6 and 14 September. And the 2023 vintage put both the winegrowers and the vines to the test: a dry spring gave way to heavy rainfall and hot, humid summer days, with stability only returning in autumn. Warm days and cool nights then favoured late-ripening grapes.
Despite the capricious weather, viticulture in the region continues to develop rapidly. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir remain reliable varieties, but Sauvignon Blanc has recently reached new heights, shedding both the green notes of the Loire and the opulence of New Zealand. And Pinot Nero, once defined by its wood treatment, is also evolving. Regions such as Mazzon and Montagna are gaining attention for their complex, expressive wines. Alois Lageder's Pinot Noir Krafuss 2021 and J. Hofstätter's Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano 2021 are both lively, profound and perfectly balanced, confirming the quality of this vintage. Chardonnay is also undergoing a quiet transformation. Many now show a leaner and more mineral approach than they did 15 or more years ago. Outstanding examples include Alois Lageder's Chardonnay Löwengang and Nals Margreid's Chardonnay Nama.
The grape variety that perhaps best captures the essence of South Tyrol is Pinot Bianco, even if the figures do not necessarily reflect this. The variety accounts for only 10 per cent of the region's total wine production, putting it behind Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer, but its area under cultivation in South Tyrol has grown steadily over the last ten years and now rivals that of Pinot Noir. The best Pinot Biancos in the world today probably come from South Tyrol. Thanks to altitudes of between 200 and 1,000 metres, the grape achieves a variety of nuances and verticality here that cannot be found anywhere else.
It is also worth mentioning that the Eisack Valley now produces salty and highly lively wines. Grüner Veltliner is an insider tip here, and Gewürztraminer shows a whole new energy. In the Vinschgau Valley, Pinot Noir reveals rare excitement alongside the famous Montagna and Mazzon vineyards. With 86 officially recognised additional geographical units (UGAs), the region is ready for a new leap forward – driven not by mass, but by origin, detail and quiet confidence." James Suckling
