In that year, when the wine world still believed in rules and traditions seemed sacrosanct, Sergio Manetti did something unheard of: in 1977, he vinified pure Sangiovese. One hundred per cent. No white grapes, no Canaiolo to round it off, no compromises. In Radda in Chianti, in the heart of Chianti Classico, where such boldness resonated particularly loudly, the region’s first pure Sangiovese was born – le Pergole Torte, named after the crooked pergolas in the steep vineyard. Giulio Gambelli, the legendary Sangiovese whisperer, stood by Manetti’s side. Together they created a wine that rewrote the rules of the game. The Consorzio del Chianti Classico, of course, balked, as this wine did not comply with the regulations, lacking the prescribed blend of other varieties. Yet critics and collectors worldwide cheered. What began as an affront became a legend. In 1981, Montevertine left the Consorzio – not out of defiance, but out of conviction. Out of love for Sangiovese in its purest, unadulterated form. Since 1982, the labels have been adorned with portraits of women by Alberto Manfredi, a friend and artist from Reggio Emilia. A new face for every vintage, a work of art on every bottle.
An intense ruby red with garnet-coloured highlights, sparkling like a gemstone. The bouquet is breathtaking: complexity and elegance blend into a symphony of aromas featuring red fruits, fine spices, cocoa and espresso, underpinned by minerality and graphite. On the palate, aristocratic refinement unfolds – a Sangiovese with a silky texture, perfectly balanced tannins, vibrant freshness and salty minerality. The final seems endless, spicy, multi-layered, sublime. Le Pergole Torte is more than just a wine in every vintage. It stands for an attitude, a philosophy, a legacy. Sergio Manetti is no longer with us, but his son Martino carries on the legacy with the same uncompromising spirit. Le Pergole Torte remains what it was back in 1977: a Sangiovese that bows to no one. A wine that broke the rules – and thus became immortal. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Le Pergole Torte is just as magnificent as last year’s. Deep and expansive in the glass, with breathtaking depth, the 2022 coats the palate with layers of dark fruit, mocha, new leather and cedar. With a little time in the glass, the 2022 begins to blossom, leading to a finish that explodes on the back end. As has been the case for some time now, the differences between Montevertine and Pergole Torte are increasingly about style. The 2022 spent a year in French oak barrels from Damy, followed by a second year in barriques. It will need a few more years to shed its baby fat so that it can unfold its full expressiveness." "A spicy, complex wine with aromas of liquorice and bergamot. The fruit is bright and multi-layered, with notes of plums and red cherries. But it is on the palate that you really sense the quality of this wine. It is full-bodied with ripe, velvety tannins and a long, refreshing acidity. A polished finish. It is made for the long haul, but is also very drinkable right now." James Suckling
"Here is another masterpiece from vintner Martino Manetti. The 2022 Le Pergole Torte is 100% Sangiovese made in a similar winemaking style as the others, although both botte and barrique are used here. It opens to a dark garnet appearance that is velvety and rich yet shiny on the inside with a ruby brightness that is specific to this Tuscan grape. This is an amazing wine, so precise and balanced. I love the boldness of the vintage, and I am delighted by how elegantly it unfolds over the palate. The wine is contoured and pretty in terms of texture, and yet there are mineral notes that add freshness and vertical lift. This portfolio offers good scale with three wines, an entry-level, middle-level and top-end wine, each offering a distinct identity." Wine Advocate
