Intense statement wine from the south-west coast of Sardinia: Barrua combines 85% Carignano with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot - a powerful composition from old vines on calcareous sandy-clay soils close to the sea. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand, vinified separately and then matured for 18 months in French barriques. After a resting period in cement tanks and several months in the bottle, the wine is now impressively balanced. Deep dark in the glass, almost impenetrable. The aroma is reminiscent of black cherries, wild berries, Mediterranean herbs, clove, pepper, liquorice and a hint of tobacco. The ageing brings notes of vanilla and cedar wood into play, but always remains at the service of the fruit. Full and concentrated on the palate, yet cool-structured and harmonious. Fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and salty minerality provide depth and elegance. The long finish is spicy and precise. Barrua has long been more than just an insider tip: a modern, Mediterranean classic with a clear signature and plenty of potential - authentic, full of character and confident. SUPERIORE.DE
"Ripe dark berries, dried flowers and spices on the nose. Rich and concentrated, with a full body and creamy, supple tannins. Broad and mouth-filling with a juicy finish." James Suckling
"A fragrant version with notes of bay leaf, ground coffee, vanilla and woody spices. This fresh red wine offers a pure, dark core of blackcurrant and black raspberry. It shows mineral accents of iron and smoke. It is structured but not overly heavy, with a hint of tannins that firm up the long-lasting finish." Wine Spectator
"Dark as night, the 2020 Isola dei Nuraghi Barrua smoulders with a beguiling bouquet of sweet spices and pipe tobacco that fades into plum sauce, grilled herbs and pebbles. This is pure elegance. It has a velvety feel, with ripe red and black fruit flavours that linger on the palate with increasing tension. Notes of blood orange and dark chocolate join in towards the end. Notes of freshly ground coffee mingle with stony mineral tones and fine-grained tannins as the 2020 finishes long, powerful and structured. Although the 2020 is more approachable than the typical Barrua at this age, it still possesses exceptional balance and complexity. Give it another year or two to develop." Vinous
