Geologists speak of erosion. Winegrowers speak of fate. Over millions of years, the rocks above Castiglione Falletto weathered and formed the soil on which Pira now thrives. When Luca Roagna acquired half a hectare on these very Rocche in 2016, a circle was completed: the mother rock returned to the child. The parcel is located in the historic heart of the site, at the top of the hill at three hundred metres, with a pure southern exposure. Calcareous clay soils, interspersed with white rock and sand, nourish Nebbiolo vines from the 1960s and 70s – planted with vines from ancient stocks. Situated right next to the new winery, this vineyard is Roagna's most intimate property: just 0.48 hectares, from which a Barolo is created that Antonio Galloni simply calls "pure sensuality".
In the glass, it displays the luminous transparency that characterises great Nebbioli – light cherry red colour with a characteristic rusty tinge. The nose combines floral elegance with the mineral rigour of limestone: crushed rose petals, violets and red berries meet leather, spices and a hint of smoke. Rocche's signature on the palate: silky tannins with an almost floating expression, backed by the structural depth that only old limestone can provide. Finesse meets backbone, grace meets tension. A Barolo that whispers and yet will resonate for decades. SUPERIORE.DE
"A solid, consistent red wine whose tart cherry, strawberry, rosehip and mineral flavours combine with a viscous texture on the palate. However, this wine is never heavy and finishes with finesse and excellent length. It is so balanced and appealing that one would like to pop the cork immediately, but it will improve with time." "The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is one of the highlights of this range from Luca Roagna. It is also a wine that needed 12+ hours to open. The wine's aromatics and inner perfume are total seduction. That's Rocche di Castiglione. Bright and focused on the palate with striking red-toned fruit, the 2020 Rocche is utterly mesmerizing. It is a Barolo that satisfies the hedonistic and intellectual senses. Readers who can find the 2020 should not hesitate, as it is a deeply moving, utterly profound wine of the highest level."
