Altare's Barolo is a Barolo of the four cardinal directions. Not geographically, but in terms of character: from La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba and the municipality of Barolo, a wine emerges that does not let any single vineyard site take centre stage, but rather lets them all speak at once. A map of the entire appellation in 10,000 bottles. What gives each vintage a different character is the climate. 2022 was hot, dry and concentrated in the Langhe – a year that Parker ranked among the most extraordinary of the last decade. The vines were under stress; the grapes ripened early and fully; and the extraction from 4 to 5 days in rotary fermenters yielded denser fruit and softer tannins than in a cooler year. Twenty-four months in used French barriques gave the wine structure and complexity without overshadowing the warmth of the vintage.
What Altare's philosophy ensures, even in warm years, is that there is no excess, nothing monumental for the sake of being monumental. The aim remains the same as it was in 1978: elegance. A deep, luminous ruby red. Opulent and warm on the nose: ripe red fruit, cherries, roses, spices, a hint of liquorice. Full-bodied on the palate and supported by soft, ripe tannins, with great warmth and a long, smooth final. The 2022 Barolo – four municipalities, a hot summer, an unmistakable signature. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Barolo is a racy, juicy wine that will drink well on release. A burst of sweet red-toned fruit, new leather, rose petal, blood orange and sweet spice races across the palate. This fruity, forward Barolo will drink well for another decade or more. Vineyard sites are Sarmassa, Bricco Ambrogio, Sorano and Pernanno. This is so drinkable." Vinous
"With a joyful manner, this classic Barolo divulges top-notes of ripe cherry, raspberry and nutmeg, while subtler accents of rose and rooibos arise as it opens. The palate is edgier; delicate red berries meet dry, confident tannins, but it is a surprising freshness that rules. Tar and sweet spice taper on the close." Decanter
