In 1991, the Frescobaldi family at CastelGiocondo embarked on an experiment that caused a stir in the Sangiovese-dominated world of Montalcino: a single-varietal Merlot, made from the first Merlot vines that had been planted on the estate back in the 1970s. The Lamaione became the solitary, powerful and self-assured figure that it remains to this day in the Montalcino landscape – a wine that defies all the appellation's conventions.

The vines grow at 300 metres above sea level, in soils composed of marine clay deposits facing south-west – ideal conditions for the power and richness that this grape variety develops here, far from its home in Bordeaux. Harvested by hand, destemmed and sorted by hand, the Merlot ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and is then aged for 21 months, 80% of which is spent in new French barriques, before the bottle takes over the final stage of maturation.

Ruby red with violet highlights. Wild berries and cherry mingle with roasted coffee beans and cocoa powder, accompanied by fresh balsamic and liquorice notes. Full-bodied on the palate, with dense yet velvety tannins and a very long finish blending fruit and balsamic notes. An exceptional Merlot that proves Montalcino is not just a Sangiovese world.
