CastelGiocondo is one of the great, historic estates in the Montalcino appellation, situated south-west of the town. The estate's origins date back to a fortress built in 1100, which once secured the road from the coast to Siena, long before wine was ever a consideration in this area. At an altitude of around 300 metres, the vines grow in three fundamentally different soil types – galestro, clay and Pliocene sand – whose interplay gives the wine its complexity, as each plot contributes its own distinct character to the cuvée.

Carefully sorted on the sorting table, the Sangiovese ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with frequent pumping over during the early stages, before ageing in oak and a further period of maturation in the bottle, as required by the appellation.

A deep, luminous ruby red. Sweet violets and wild rose mingle with wild berries, alongside star anise, black and white pepper, tea leaves, tobacco and coffee beans, with a slightly balsamic finish and a hint of liquorice. On the palate, it is fresh and round, supported by ripe, never harsh tannins, with a very long, lingering finish. A Brunello that brings together the full range of its terroirs in a single glass.
