There is a vineyard in the Roero that has played a quietly special role for decades. Valmaggiore, in the municipality of Vezza d'Alba, is a steep, almost impossible to cultivate amphitheatre with a south-westerly exposure – one hectare, almost pure sandy soil, hardly any organic matter on the surface. The vines have to dig deep. And the deeper they dig, the finer what they bring back. Bruno Giacosa recognised this early on. He has been leasing land there for decades, cultivating the Alberello vines, which are now around 45 years old, with the same care that he reserves for his Barolo and Barbaresco vineyards – and produces a wine that systematically exceeds the expectations of a DOC appellation. Alessandro Masnaghetti, the cartographic conscience of top Piedmontese wine, has classified Valmaggiore as one of the most important cru sites in the entire Roero. No surprise for anyone who knows this wine.
The 2024 vintage finally brought significant rainfall to the Roero after two dry years – the soils filled up, the vines breathed a sigh of relief and ripening was even and slow. The Nebbiolo grapes were harvested in the first half of October, when the phenolic ripeness of the well-exposed vineyards was optimal. Vinification as always: spontaneous fermentation, 27 days maceration in steel tanks with regular pumping over, complete malolactic fermentation. Matured for 14 months in French oak. Bottled without filtration.
Transparent garnet red with orange tones in the glass – a bright picture of lightness. The nose is the opposite of loud: wild strawberry, raspberry, dried violets, rose pastille, white pepper and an almost ethereal minerality that no limestone marl terroir produces in this way. Medium-bodied on the palate, fine sandy tannins with a delicate bite, vibrant freshness and a long, salty-spicy finish. Nebbiolo in its silkiest, most transparent form and with the complexity of a Barbaresco. SUPERIORE.DE
