In Abruzzo, Trebbiano was long regarded as a simple "workhorse" grape variety, hardly worthy of any serious reputation. Gianni Masciarelli saw something different in it: the most organoleptically interesting variety in the entire Trebbiano family, capable of standing stylistically alongside the great white wines of Burgundy, whilst retaining the unique vigour and character of its Abruzzese origins. In 1991, this wine was created, and it has since maintained its place amongst the most significant Italian white wines. Thirty-five years later, a tasting in direct comparison with a Burgundy Chardonnay from Albert Bichot confirmed precisely this vision.

The grapes come from the hills of the Colline Teatine near Bucchianico, at the foot of the imposing Calanchi erosion landscapes, between San Martino sulla Marrucina at 400 metres and Bucchianico at 250 metres, on clayey soil with a moderate limestone content. The vines are trained using the Guyot method; they are between 18 and 20 years old, with a high planting density of 6,000 vines per hectare and a deliberately low yield. The harvest are harvest between 10 and 20 October, by hand into crates. Following a twelve-hour cold maceration in the press, the must ferments directly in new French oak barriques. The wine matures for twelve months in oak, followed by a further twelve months in the bottle.

On the nose: lemon, green apple and jasmine, followed by pear, blood orange and a hint of lemon meringue. Concentrated and juicy on the palate, with a long-lasting finish. SUPERIORE.DE
