“Vigna del Sorbo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 (BIO)
Vigna del Sorbo pleases at first sight with its full, strong ruby red. It takes over the nose with a clear, intense fruitiness, to which herbaceous notes add, before the wide, consistent flavour and the straightforward, flawless final set in. An excellent harmony between structure and elegance and for years one of the greatest Gran Selezione in Chianti Classico. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich, deep ruby. Rich and fleshy nose, smells of blackberry and ripe plum, some cinnamon in the background. Meaty and gripping also on the palate, lots of dark berry fruit, opens with present, dense tannin." Falstaff
"The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is expressive, dark and thickly concentrated. I received my samples early and found that this wine was a little shy or slow to open in this early phase. If given extra time, the bouquet warms up to dark fruit, plum, rum cake and dried violet. I came back to the wine about two hours later and discovered a pretty note of crushed aspirin or carbon, with more crushed flower. The oak adds sweet spice and scorched earth, but these too will integrate with time." Wine Advocate
"Powerful, tight red with currant and plum character. Hints of new wood and bark. Full-bodied with dark berries and hints of dark chocolate, as well as other dark fruit. Flavorful finish. Solid. Needs time to open." James Suckling
"The summer was dry and warm without extreme heat and leading up to harvest, the nights cooled down substantially. His Vigna del Sorbo is one of the top wines among a robust set of stellar offerings from this outstanding vintage. It is remarkable for the freshness and purity that rises above the concentration and density. A mix of smoke, liquorice , black cherry and thyme emerges slowly. Even in their commanding grip, the tannins are perfectly polished and sophisticated. Full, packed with fruit but with incredible agility and lip-smacking tanginess, this lingers with fragrant earth, tobacco and crushed stone. For the long-haul." Decanter
"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a dense, packed wine. It is also surprisingly, almost shockingly backward. That is probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers hoping to get an early glimpse into the 2017 before it shuts down may have a hard time doing that, as today acids and tannin dominate. I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years." “Camartina” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC
Camartina 2016 has exceptional finesse and elegance. Elegant, deep ruby red. Rich aromas of black and red berries such as black cherry and blueberry, joined by notes of ripe plum and tamarind. With further aeration then multi-layered notes of ivy, forest floor and freshly cut bark with hints of leather, sweet tobacco and liquorice. The full and silky body is framed by firm but well-integrated tannins supported by excellent acidity. Then, just before the long finish, ripe black fruits enriched by nutmeg and sweet spices. Great its Tuscan identity full of energy and liveliness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Shiny, dense ruby. Opens on the nose with fine spicy notes, cinnamon blossom and clove, followed by cassis and plum. Substantial and powerful on the attack, opens with many layers of present tannin, lots of juicy berry fruit." Falstaff
"Very pretty and precise with tight tannins and polish. It's linear and compact with blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry character. Racy and polished." James Suckling
"Ripe, sweet black currant, black cherry, iron, leather and tobacco flavors mingle in this tightly-wound red. Balanced, dense and remains focused and persistent on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2016 Camartina is superb. As always, Camartina is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese, all from Greve's Ruffoli district, where Querciabella is located. At this stage in its development, the Camartina is driven by Sangiovese in its red-toned fruit, aromatics and acid profile. The 2016 is vibrant, saline and full of energy. I am so intrigued to see how it develops in bottle." Vinous

“Tignanello” Toscana IGT 2017
"Brilliant, rich ruby colour with a slight violet hue. Opens with fine spicy notes, some rosemary, then dried tomatoes, lots of blackberry. Grippy, rich tannins, savoury and gripping tannins, many layers, salty and long on the final, great Storage potential." Falstaff
"This red wine, which is somewhat shy in aroma today, shows flavours of plums, black cherries, earth, red chalk and toasted oak. It is muscular and dense and firms up on the finish. Well proportioned and long." Wine Spectator
"The aromas of plums and cherries are accompanied by black pepper, cloves and the floral notes typical of the Chianti Classico region, such as iris and violets. The palate is darker and shows chocolate notes with a balsamic character - peppermint in the depths - and a delicate coconut finish. It is full and powerful, with a strong acidity and compact tannins that are very balanced thanks to its amazing fruit concentration." Decanter
"The 2017 Tignanello is dense, exotic and extravagant. Red berry fruits, cherries in liqueur, blood oranges, wild flowers and sweet spices take centre stage in this lush, racy Tignanello, which is probably wonderful to drink straight away. The Antinori team did an excellent job with the 2017, a year in which heat and drought affected 30% of production." Vinous
"A dense, very precise red with plums and hazelnuts. Full-bodied and very polished with fine, creamy tannins and a long, flavourful finish. Shows real finesse for the vintage. Better after 2023, but already a pleasure to taste now." James Suckling
"The Marchesi Antinori 2017 Tignanello (made from Sangiovese and smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) is a dark, lush and inviting wine. I tasted my sample after a double decant and was delighted by the depth of the wine and the immediate openness of the flavours. It is a symphony of dark fruit with black cherry, plum, spice and sweet tobacco. I particularly like a distant hint of medicinal or mentholated herbs, which I have detected in other wines with fruit from the Tignanello estate in 2017. There is also a drying mineral note of crushed chalk. The heat and dryness of the vintage have increased the aromatic intensity of the wine (yields were reduced by a third), but the mouthfeel is carefully crafted to maintain its softness and suppleness. The fruit comes from a 57-hectare section of Tenuta Tignanello from a vineyard 390 metres above sea level, composed of Alberese limestone and soils of marine origin." Wine Advocate

Powerful, very attractive exceptional wine. Smells of strawberry and cherry, spices and a hint of leather. Tastes juicy, very special and impresses with taut tannin and persistent length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich, rich ruby with a fine garnet shimmer. Appealing, intense nose with notes of plums, wild raspberry, underlaid with delicate cinnamon. Lots of juicy cherry fruit on the palate, opens with fine, grippy tannin, clear and smooth, firm pressure on the final." Falstaff
"The nose shows real elegance and spice and subtle notes of dried herbs. Such firm tannins that are backed up by wonderful fresh acidity. The palate has a light peppery note and seems to glide over the palate, stopping only to tickle the roof of your mouth. Savoury and sapid, extremely impressive." Jancis Robinson
"This is suave and expands on the palate, with cherry, black currant, mineral and woodsy underbrush notes. Shows purity to the fruit, along with support from the fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. Excellent length." Wine Spectator
"A blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino from three far-removed vineyard parcels in different areas of Tuscany, the 2016 Colore is something of a pan-Tuscan wine. This ambitious wine gives voice to three of the region's most important red grape varieties as well as its most diverse territories (Lamole in Chianti Classico, Vincigliata near Florence and Siena province in the southern part of Tuscany). As a result, this is a statement wine with a lot to say to those careful enough to listen. It's important to be attentive to the details, the small berry fruit aromas that intermingle with nuances of spice, granite stone and pressed blue flower. Pure summer cherry is the dominant aroma on first nose, but it slowly disintegrates as the wine takes on more air to reveal those lighter and more delicate aromas at the back. This vintage offers an ideal dose of structure matched against freshness. Bibi Graetz tells me that fruit in 2015 was beautiful, perfect to look at. Fruit in 2016, however, appeared more sculpted with more darkness and weight. On some level, those descriptions also apply to the character of these two gorgeous back-to-back vintages." Wine Advocate
"The aromas are always so complex with cherries, blackberries, rosemary, sage and spice. Full-bodied, very tight and polished with a dense and powerful palate, which opens and grows, yet remains agile and beautiful. A solid red. Wonderful segue from the 2015. Try after 2022." James Suckling

Siepi is developing more and more into a cult wine that can easily keep up with the very big reds of Tuscany. The 2018 edition presents itself powerful and very nicely centred, here all elements fit together perfectly. Ripe dark berry fruit, forest floor and roasted almonds. Intense and powerful on the palate with complex and layered hints of plum, tobacco and forest floor. The tension of extract sweetness and polished tannins leads into a fresh, spicy finish with an interesting salty note. SUPERIORE.DE
"This is one of the 50 wines that changed Italian wine culture." Gambero Rosso
"Shiny, rich ruby with a fine violet shimmer. Very clear and memorable nose, full of cassis and blackberry, balsamic notes in the background. Very precise on the palate, showing lots of fresh fruit of black cherry, polished, finely meshed tannin, fine melting on the final." Falstaff
"A lush, polished version, this red is bursting with black cherry, plum and violet aromas and flavors. It's heady, showing a touch of heat on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"Mazzei 2018 Siepi is a dark and robust Tuscan red with a heavy center of gravity. This medium to full-bodied blend of Sangiovese and Merlot offers plenty of spice, plum, tobacco and blue flower. This wine offers beautiful intensity and richness with an especially smooth texture. It wraps thickly over the palate, imparting more dark fruit and savory spice along the way." Wine Advocate
"There is a sweetness here that is enveloping and seductive with baked heart undertones set again rasperry, plum, black cherry and sandalwood. Soft and caressing tannins where the grace and aromatic power of Sangiovese is giving a satiny texture and enveloping mouthfeel by the Merlot. A brilliant wine that has an identity and a sense of place. First vintage 1992. Located in Chianti Classico, the Estate has a 600 ha forest that practices sustainable agro-forestry and is more than carbon neutral, in fact having a positive carbon balance where the Estate absorbs 5 times as much CO2 as it emits." Decanter
"Extremely perfumed and crystal-clear with violets, plums, raspberries, walnuts and black olives. It's medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are extremely polished and refined. The length is long and very precise. Chocolate and hazelnuts." James Suckling
"Siepi, Fonterutoli's Merlot/Sangiovese blend, is absolutely gorgeous in 2018. Rich, pliant and creamy, Siepi offers all of the seductiveness of Merlot with the bright acids and grip of Sangiovese. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, dried herbs, spice, licorice and new leather meld together in an open-knit, inviting Tuscan red with no hard edges and tons of allure shaped by alberese soils with a good bit of clay. The 2018 is an undeniably sexy wine with so much immediacy. The 2018 is positively stellar and also one of the very best editions in recent memory. Don't miss it." Vinous

Deep dark ruby violet. On the nose, cassis, blackcurrant and a powerful herbal spiciness with a good dose of pipe tobacco, tar and crushed boulders. On the palate, dark berries, chocolate and a cornucopia of herbs define the full body. This wine monument has precisely integrated tannins, an enormous silkiness and a seemingly endless finish. "Rich, sparkling ruby with a slight violet shimmer. Complex nose with notes of cedar, black truffle, then lots of cassis and blackberry. Round and supple on the palate, showing well matured fruit, exceedingly precise, fine, polished tannin, very long, dark chocolate in the finish." Falstaff
"This is a dark, concentrated and full-bodied expression that exudes black fruit and blackberry with spicy tobacco and savory spice. Despite the Bordeaux blend in its DNA, the wine is fully Tuscan in character and spirit, with the softness and fullness that comes from fruit cultivated under the golden sunshine of Central Italy." Wine Advocate

As every spring, the leading wine magazine FALSTAFF is dedicated to central Tuscany and highlights not only the classics, but also the current vintages of the so-called Supertuscans without the strict corset of grape varieties or vinification of the DOCs or DOCGs.
Chief taster Othmar Kiem notes: "In the heart of Tuscany, some of the best wines in Italy are produced. The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione as well as the so-called Supertuscans of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 vintages were tasted by Falstaff. Sangiovese is the leading variety of Tuscany and finds its highest expression in the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione and in some of the so-called Supertuscans. And since the "wine revolution" in the 1980s, it has been known that Cabernet & Co also thrive here.
The interior of Tuscany is a wine-growing region rich in tradition. The most important areas are the Chianti Classico hills between Florence and Siena, the adjoining wine-growing zones such as Valdarno, Carmignano or Rufina, and the countryside around Montalcino. But outstanding wines also come from the surrounding areas. The dominant grape variety is Sangiovese, which is characterised by fine cherry fruit, juicy acidity and grippy tannins. In all Chianti Classico, Sangiovese is the main component. The new category of Gran Selezione unites the best Chianti Classico wines, many of which are single-varietal Sangiovese. The Consorzio's plan is that in future Gran Selezione may only consist of Sangiovese. Pure Sangiovese, however, also exists in the category of Supertuscans. These are mostly wines that originated in the 1980s and were deliberately not declared as Chianti Classico at the time.
2016 was a perfect vintage in these areas. This is confirmed again in our tastings. 2017 was difficult, hot and dry as a vintage. Often these wines are characterised by dry, rough tannin. Nevertheless, there is also excellence here. Finally, 2018 shows itself fresh, with juicy fruit and already very balanced despite its youth. Here, it is above all wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc or Merlot that inspire." Falstaff
We are pleased to have compiled the highest-rated wines in our range for you in this tasting. Have fun browsing!
