For some years now, Matteo Catania has been holding back a few hundred bottles of his wines in the best vintages in order to offer them to his most loyal importers after a few years. From this "private reserve" comes Nerobaronj 2014, which is now - in spring 2023 - being offered in small quantities with 5 years of further bottle ageing quasi in Riserva quality.
"Perfumed and remarkably pretty, the 2014 NeroBaronj emerges from the glass with a dusty mix of autumnal spices, sweet rose and vibrant, freshly squeezed black cherries. It has a creamy texture with a pleasing inner sweetness, while cool acidity enlivens the crisp wild berries and contrasting sour citrus tones within. The grapes for the Vigna Pedale come from vines that are over 30 years old. The vines are planted in a sapling system, which allows only a few grapes per vine. The harvest does not begin until mid-October, which is very unusual for this location so far south. Purple dark red colour. Spicy aroma of cherries, thyme, wild mushrooms and earth, the typical, unadulterated flavour is strong and concentrated with a subtle sweetness. In particularly good vintages, particularly fine wines ripen naturally. The winegrowers often bottle wines from rare vintages separately. In large bottles, because the maturation takes place a little slower in them. And because they are of course also sought after as collector's items or as gifts.
These special bottles usually come in a specially designed gift box or an original wooden cassette, also abbreviated OWC. This is what these rare large bottles are called. From France. But not even there uniformly. It may well be that a bottle in Bordeaux and Champagne has the same name, but has a different number of litres. A little confusing, then. Internationally, however, these designations have become established for wine: Magnum (two standard bottles) 1,5 l, double magnum 3 l, Jeroboam 5 l, Methusalem 6 l, Balthazar 12 l and Nebuchadnezzar 18 l.
