    Things to know aboutRarities 

    In particularly good vintages, particularly fine wines ripen naturally. The winegrowers often bottle wines from rare vintages separately. In large bottles, because the maturation takes place a little slower in them. And because they are of course also sought after as collector's items or as gifts.

    These special bottles usually come in a specially designed gift box or an original wooden cassette, also abbreviated OWC. For the protection of heavy bottles, as collector's items or for counterfeit protection. Particularly valuable wines are therefore often only offered in 6 or 12 OWCs. These bring, if one collects these under yield aspects, then also with auctions clearly higher values.

    This is what these rare large bottles are called. From France. But not even there uniformly. It may well be that a bottle in Bordeaux and Champagne has the same name, but has a different number of litres. A little confusing, then. Internationally, however, these designations have become established for wine: Magnum (two standard bottles) 1,5 l, double magnum 3 l, Jeroboam 5 l, Methusalem 6 l, Balthazar 12 l and Nebuchadnezzar 18 l.
