The latest addition to Vajra's Barolo line-up comes from a 1.5 hectare parcel in Coste di Rose, a small MGA (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive) in the Barolo region. This is a steep slope at 310 metres above sea level with a high proportion of sandy soils with good drainage, whose vines and soils are cultivated in a natural way. This very accessible Barolo presents itself straightforward, forward and impresses even at a young age with its refreshing frankness. A very precise bouquet of cherry, plum, liquorice, spices and menthol. The grapes for the house's classic Barolo come from the sites/communes of Ornato, La Serra, Briccolina in Serralunga d'Alba, Gustava and Garretti in Grinzane Cavour, Roncaglie in La Morra, Ravera in Novello and, from the 2015 vintage, Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba. It is more of a traditional, classic Barolo with an exciting bouquet of deep, dark fruits and a pretty potpourri of rose petals, spices, smoke and tar. The palate is full-bodied and firm, opening with lots of tightly woven tannins, very powerful, with pressure and rich bite on the back end, laid out for a long life. SUPERIORE.DE

Rio Sordo Riserva is particularly dense, rich and balanced. On the nose we find roses, spices and raspberries. On the palate, it is very complex and has a wonderful depth and juiciness. Rio Sordo offers a taut and sharp fruit on the surface, which is rounded off with some tannin and crispness on the finish. Muncagota is rich, deep and super-expressive every year, hitting all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, spices, leather and liquorice all come out, but all very hesitantly and with a lot of aeration, better: with further bottle ageing. Muncagota is one of the examples from the famous series of nine Riserve that clearly needs time. And time should be given to it, and the patient will be richly rewarded. SUPERIORE.DE

Pajé is a small vineyard near the village of Barbaresco, whose calcareous soils usually produce bright and floral wines, and this wine impressively fulfils that expectation, combined with an already remarkable density that it is only beginning to reveal. On the nose, it shows intensity and purity, with penetrating aromas of red fruits. On the attack, it is supple, luminous but weighty and very focused. The site Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is, as always, one of the outstanding wines of this series. The palate is full-bodied, with flavours of crushed raspberries, juicy Marasca cherries, liquorice and nutmeg, and firm, tight-knit tannins. The fresh acidity adds tension and balance. The Barbaresco Montefico 2017 is a jewel of a wine. Freshly cut flowers, minerals, crushed rocks, rose petals and lavender are all finely cut. As always, the Montefico is taut and angular in style. Its sense of transparency is simply beguiling. Sage, mint and sweet pipe tobacco are some of the nuances that linger. Montefico is a Barbaresco for lovers of tighter red wines, whom it will delight. The Sottimano winery has five vineyard sites, with the Pajorè site near Treiso having the poorest soils of all. These wines are therefore more elegant and ripe. Pajoré is a super-classic, explosive wine, with tremendous depth and character. Although it has a lot of breadth and texture, it remains light on its feet. Lavender, mint, liquorice and purple berry fruit are beguiling and wonderfully vibrant in the glass. Pajorè is a spicy, elegant and sweet Nebbiolo that is fine yet covers the mouth well - and we are always impressed by its lovely salty mouthfeel. SUPERIORE.DE

The vivacious Chiara Boschis has been a rather modernist Barolo winemaker for over 25 years, although she now uses much less new oak than in the past. She is best known for her Cannubi, but her Mosconi, from 1 ha of this top vineyard in Monforte d'Alba, can be just as good in some vintages.

Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2018 is unusually open and seductive, as it is normally rather shy and needs time before it shows the full range of its personality. In the drink, then, the typical, medium-heavy characteristics of Bricco delle Viole, at the same time the contours are soft and the wine's personality demands the next sip.
