Historisch gesehen befinden sich die Weinberge von Castello di Fonterutoli in den Gebieten von drei benachbarten Gemeinden des Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga und Radda in Chianti. Mit dem Jahrgang 2017 hat die Familie Mazzei erstmals alle drei Großlagen separat als Chianti Classico Gran Selezione vinifiziert, um der Vielfalt des Terroirs Rechnung zu tragen: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 und Badiola.

Castello di Fonterutoli stammt aus 11 verschiedenen Parzellen in 420-510 m Höhe rund um den Weiler Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. Er ist quasi das "Château" und das zugleich älteste Cru des Weinguts und wurde erstmals 1995 als Vorgänger der heutigen Gran Selezione produziert. Satte Farbe und der klare Duft nach Brombeeren, Kirschen, nach Veilchen und Blumen, dazu etwas Nougat. Dieser vollmundige Castello Fonterutoli besticht durch seine betörende Extraktsüße und das geschliffene Tannin. Der intensive und konzentrierte Geschmack umgarnt die Sinne.
