    La Crotta di Vegneron

    On the slopes of Chambave, at the gates of Aosta, facing the sun, more and more vineyards have been planted throughout history, despite difficult growing conditions. Their grapes are mainly delivered to the La Crotta di Vegneron winegrowers' cooperative. The first wine production of the cooperative, founded in 1980, dates back to the autumn of 1985. Whereas at that time only 25 winegrowers delivered the fruits of their labour to the cooperative in the Valle d'Aosta, today there are around 120 winegrowers from fragmented, tiny estates who transport their grapes, which are mostly harvested by hand, to the cooperative's cellars. The Chambave DOC area comprises the Châtillon, Saint-Vincent, Verrayes, Saint-Denis and Chambave districts. The vineyards of Fénis and Quart also belong to the DOC Nus.

    The policy of the cooperative, which is very important for the region, is to attach great importance to the indigenous Petit Rouge, Fumin and Vien de Nus varieties and to the traditional Muscat de Chambave and Nus Malvoisie grapes in the 500 to 850-metre-high vineyards. The Muscat was already very popular as the most important grape variety in the age of the counts and dukes of Savoy. Nus Malvoisie is the local name for the more famous Pinot Grigio. With the renewal of the production regulations, the local grape varieties Mayolet and Cornalin, which have come back to honour, are now also allowed to use the Denomination of Origin „Denominazione di Origine Controllata“ to wear. The internationally known Pinot Noir, Gamay and Müller-Thurgau varieties are also taken into account for wine production, as they also find suitable soils in the Valle d'Aosta.

    From the grapes of the traditional growing zone in the Valle d'Aosta, a total of 19 wines are pressed in the cooperative, of which the lion's share may bear the DOC seal.
