About the winemakersSilvio NardiTuscany | Montalcino

In the beautiful wooded north of the municipality of Montalcino, where wild boars and fallow deer live, lies the historic winery Silvio Nardi. In 1950 Silvio, father of the present owners, bought the Tenuta di Casale del Bosco more out of passion than for a living. In the meantime, the family estate in the Montalcino area is divided between the heart and two estates in Manachiara and Colombaiole in the eastern part of the cultivation zone. The Silvio Nardi winery was one of the founders of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium in 1967.

A total of 36 plots are cultivated in the Tenute. The 80 hectares of vineyards, located on the eastern and western slopes of the Montalcino hill at altitudes between 140 and 480 metres above sea level, are mainly planted with Sangiovese. But also traditional plants like Colorino or the international grape varieties Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot can be found there. The vines have an average age of about 20 years, which should be reduced in the future by a replanting programme started in 1997.

The bottoms of the land used by Tenute Silvio Nardi for viticulture are usually made of clay with sandy and muddy deposits. The terraces near Casale del Bosco are characterized by shallow but fresh skeleton floors that extend to the jasper quartz variety. In the area of Manachiara the soil consists of clay and silty marl with calcareous and sandy quartz-rich deposits.

Since 1990 Emilia Nardi Silvios, the youngest daughter, has been running the company. Together with her brothers she decided for radical changes. Emilia initiated a process of redesigning both the vineyards and the wine cellar. She also decided to combine tradition with scientific research. SUPERIORE.DE

“Within ten years, Emilia has turned everything upside down with risky decisions from a production and sales point of view - and her actions were good, as Brunello Manachiara impressively demonstrates. Gambero Rosso
