    • Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2017 (BIO)

Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2017 (BIO)

Brilliant ruby red. In the nose sour cherry, blackberries and notes of black cherry, delicate scent of vanilla. Warm and smooth on the palate, good structure and very balanced tannins. A fresh, harmonious Tuscan that does not deny its origins. SUPERIORE.DE

"Aromas of cocoa, sunbaked earth and toasted almond lead the way. It's ripe and chewy, with taut polished tannins that accompany juicy black cherry, raspberry and ground clove." Wine Enthusiast

"Good red color. Fresh, straightforward red cherry, herb, and gentle pepper aromas. Then firmer cherry and berry skin flavors are framed by dusty tannins and complicated by earth tones. The cherry note lingers on the refreshingly energetic finish. Made with organically grown grapes from the south-eastern section of Montalcino, this is a declassified Brunello." Vinous

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Medium bright, shiny ruby red. Juicy dark cherries, rose petals, spicy herbs, mint and wild flowers. A wine with depth, silky tannins and a round, smooth finish that will delight lovers of fruity Brunello. The 2015 edition is a prime example of harmony and expression, very successful! SUPERIORE.DE

"Shiny, rich ruby garnet. Intense and dense nose with aromas of ripe raspberries, some liquorice and plums. Shows fine tannin with a firm bite, fine fruit, in the final firm pressure, clear and straightforward." Falstaff

"A more delicate style than many 2015s, this displays cherry, strawberry, mineral and tobacco flavors. Builds in weight as the solid matrix of tannins asserts itself on the lively finish. Best from 2022 through 2038." Wine Spectator

"The ripe red fruit here is so expressive and floral, featuring dried rose petals, hibiscus, poppies, dried strawberries and raspberries. It falls inwards on the palate, compressed and captivating, gathering rough-edged strands of tannins as it goes, threading them through an iron-fisted, central core of flavor and texture. Drink from 2025." James Suckling

"Wild berry, camphor, tobacco and cocoa aromas fill the glass. Smooth, juicy and delicious, the full-bodied palate delivers ripe black cherry, raspberry compote and licorice while firm fine-grained tannins offer support. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced." Wine Enthusiast

    • Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2012

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2012

Intensity, harmony and elegance - this is San Polos Brunello Riserva from the very good year 2012. Compact bouquet of ripe dark berries, inviting and clear. Very fruity on the palate, opens wide with polished tannin into a never-ending finale. SUPERIORE.DE

"A slim version for the vintage, this linear red displays cherry, strawberry, floral and spice aromas and flavors. Sweet fruit holds the center, with refined tannins following up on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator

"For the Riserva, a selection is made at harvest of the thinnest bunches with the smallest berries. It's a classy, polished example with a cherry and vanilla core offset by thyme, sous-bois and cedar notes. Layers of sturdy tannin provide a solid frame for the ripe fruit." Decanter

"Aromas of ripe plum, underbrush, eucalyptus and star anise emerge in the glass. Polished and firmly structured, the palate delivers fleshy black cherry, strawberry jam, licorice and tobacco set against a backbone of youthfully assertive fine-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Dark red with some amber at the rim. Sweet red cherry, Asian herbs and woodsy underbrush on the nose. Enters rich and ripe, then slightly more angular and tart in the middle, offering red berry and cherry flavors that are less flinty and herbal than those of the 2013 Brunello from San Polo. Finishes with lipsmacking acidity and an austere quality. Really needs a few years in the cellar to round out. This will likely turn out to be a very good food wine." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"This is a darkly saturated Sangiovese with a very etched and precise fruit profile. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva offers immediate aromas of black cherry liqueur and pressed blackberry. Those berry notes are followed by spice, cinnamon and toasted coffee. This Riserva hits the palate with direct force and precision. It does not show the jammy or cooked notes commonly found in Sangiovese made in this hot vintage." Robert Parker

"Reserved and cool for this opulent vintage with red fruits and delicate herbal notes. This is a concentrated and deep wine with a ton of dry tannins. Great balance, too. I love the long finish with its minty freshness." James Suckling

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Podernovi" DOCG 2015

Brunello di Montalcino “Podernovi” DOCG 2015

One of the best vintages of the last twenty years and San Polo's first single vineyard Brunello. Ruby red colour, not too deep, with light garnet reflections. In the nose floral aromas of violet, cyclamen and jasmine, notes of fresh fruit and spice. In the mouth it is round, full of harmony, with good structure and acidity and very soft tannins, which show an excellent persistence overall. A wine of almost endless length, depth and with a distinct character that will be remembered. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, sparkling ruby with garnet edge. Very dense and inviting nose, notes of ripe plums, liquorice and dried porcini mushrooms. Fills out the palate, but shows not only fullness, but also a lot of juice and elegance, a very polished, elegant Brunello, long finish." Falstaff

"Firmly structured, this opens with aromas of underbrush, exotic spice and whiffs of eucalyptus oil. The firm palate evokes black-cherry extract, orange zest, licorice and tobacco set against assertive, close-grained tannins that leave a rather austere, drying finish. Give it time to fully unwind." Wine Enthusiast

"San Polo's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi is dark and earthy, with notes of moist soil, savory herbs, and minerals that wafting up from the glass. Mineral-encased ripe red fruits, propelled by vibrant acids with sweet spices and a hint of youthful tannin develop with air. The finish is long and buzzing with zesty acids and spice, along with a coating of fine tannin that tugs at the cheek. There’s a great blending of earth and fruit that makes the Podernovi quite attractive, yet a few years in the cellar should yield an even more balanced wine." Vinous

"Lush and fruity, featuring plum, cherry, strawberry and iron aromas and flavors. Bright acidity and dense tannins form the structure as this plays out on the long finish. The excellent youthful balance shows promise for the future." Wine Spectator

"A dense and layered red with plum, cherry and chocolate character. Full body. Dense and ripe tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Shows layers of fruit and rich tannins. New and exciting wine from here. Try after 2022." James Suckling

    About the winemakers
    San Polo
    Tuscany | Montalcino
    San Polo

On the eastern slope of Montalcino lies the road that leads to Castelnuovo dell'Abate, which is located in Val d'San Polo Winery, located in Orca and accessible only via a gravel road. In 2007, Marilisa Allegrini and Leonardo Lo Cascio, the well-known dealer for Italian wines in the USA, had acquired the winery near the hamlet of Podernovi, which is equally convincing for aesthetes and environmentalists. The two winegrowers, who also successfully cultivate Poggio al Tesoro in Bolgheri in Tuscany, are pursuing the ambitious goal of developing the 22-hectare vineyard uncompromisingly into a world-famous winery. That's why they do their utmost to maximize the potential of the terroir.

The new landowner's wife, who had already gained fame in Veneto - more precisely in Valpolicella, the cradle of the famous Amarone - and whose name is by no means unknown in Italy's wine industry, did not immediately start production, but first tested the soil and clones in detail. She also took a closer look at documentation on vine grafting. Today, outstanding plants thrive in the densely planted vineyard plots cultivated according to near-natural criteria at high altitudes. Half of the 17 hectares of vineyards are registered for Brunello.

The ultra-modern cellar, completely underground and built according to bio-architecture guidelines, contains barrels of various sizes. The volume of the containers ranges from small barrique barrels to barrels with a capacity of 30 hectolitres. In malolactic fermentation, farmers prefer cement tanks to stainless steel tanks.

The wines of San Paolo have in the past been featured in many magazines such as "Wine Spectator", "The Wine Advocate" and "Wine Enthusiast" with awards. For example, the Brunello years 2003 to 2007 were regularly rewarded with 90 to 95 points. SUPERIORE.DE

"The acquisition of the estate by the Allegrini family ... has finally brought to the surface the full potential of these wonderful vineyards, which due to adverse circumstances could not be used by the previous owners."Gambero Rosso
