    The vineyards of Poggio il Castellare are in the best position outside Castelnuovo dell'Abate, close to the magnificent panorama of Sant'Antimo Abbey and opposite the picturesque Orcia Valley, where Monte Amiata rises majestically. The winery is owned by the old Baroncini family. Already in 1489 Antonio Bastiano Baroncini, a rich landowner, had started the winemaking in the Montalcino area in San Gimignano. In the course of history, the family achieved social prestige and was able to steadily expand its possessions. Today the winery is run by Stefano and his wife Bruna. The Fattoria Querciarossa in the Maremma and the Tenuta Il Faggeto in the Montepulciano area also belong to the estates of the Baroncinis.

    On eight hectares of vineyards the Poggio il Castellare estate mainly cultivates the very robust Sangiovese grosso grape variety. The soils contain an advantageous mixture of different minerals such as limestone. They also have slate and skeletal parts and clay marl.

    The five estate wines produced are well structured and convince with a favourable price-performance ratio. No other grapes are added to the Brunello and Rosso. While the Rosso can be enjoyed like a little Brunello in good years, the Passo dei Caprioli, a cuvée of Sangiovese and Merlot, is a wine for many occasions. Brunello di Montalcino from the house of Poggio il Castellare made it to 11th place in 2009. "Top 100" of the US trade magazine "Wine Spectator". The Brunellos are aged in Slavonian oak barrels and in barriques.

    The recently completed wine cellar contains stainless steel tanks for fermentation as well as barrels for traditional vinification methods. In a second part, the plants mature in barrels of between three and 30 hectolitres and in barriques. In the upper part of the cellar there is a glass veranda which can be used for wine tastings and meetings. (superiore.de)
