Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2016 (BIO)
Poggio di Sotto | Tuscany
Collemassari S.p.A. s.a. | Via Di Porta Pinciana 6 | IT 00187 Roma
Poggio di Sotto has indisputably released one of the best wines of the vintage here. This 2016 Riserva fulfils the promise of its category. This wine offers intensity and complexity in abundance. The bouquet is more refined and deeper than that of the Annata, alongside dark fruits and blackberries, this wine shows an added dose of cloves and spices. In the mouth, the wine is supple and silky, but it also shows impressive power and length. If you are willing to wait ten years or more, you will be rewarded in the most excellent way with this Riserva! SUPERIORE.DE
"Just mid ruby with just the beginning of orange tinges. At first, a little closed and with notes of dark spice. Takes lots of time to open up. Great purity of fruit emerging with aeration. Succulent acidity melting into the ripe raspberry fruit on the finish. Lots of suave tannins of lip-smacking quality and then closes up. Simply gorgeous." Jancis Robinson
"Impresses with a scent of red berries, flowers and perfectly integrated wood; harmonious in the mouth, the ripe acidity and the fresh, fine-grained tannins enliven, beautiful progression towards a complex elegant final. Can still mature." Vinum
"Sparkling, medium dense ruby garnet. Intense and very appealing nose, of rose petals, fresh wild raspberries and dark cherries. Unfolds on the palate with lots of grippy tannin, filled with fine melting, long final with notes of raspberry and cherry, exceedingly polished." Falstaff
"Bright and vibrant, this Riserva captivates with gorgeous aromas of orange oil, rose, pomegranate, raspberry and even sun-dried tomato. The palate is tightly closed, denser than usual but gracefully composed. Tactile tannins coat the mouth with a powdery texture. Finally, a juicy core of currants reveals itself. The long and detailed finish shows smoke, pepper and orange peel." Decanter
"This elegant, detailed Brunello shows beautiful, pure cherry and strawberry fruit. Rich and saturated with fruit, but also lively and long. It has floral, mineral and tobacco accents that give it depth. This balanced red wine is characterised by finesse rather than power." Wine Spectator
"This wine is very perfumed with aromas of cherries, flowers, hot stones and chalk that develop into a medium to full body with velvety and slightly dusty tannins. Bark and truffle add to the complexity of the finish." James Suckling
"Dark and brooding in its youthful state, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva offers a seductive bouquet of dried cherries, currants, cloves and dusty flowers, as if opening a cedar box lost many years ago. It laps silky waves of red berries and liquid flowers on a core of bright acids, becoming spicier and more violet as the palate progresses. The inner harmony and elegance achieved here is remarkable, as if there is no hard edge in sight, yet it is structured and savoury - almost salty, even. After a full minute, there are still notes of liquorice, pomegranate and cinnamon. As stimulating and lively as this wine is today, it will need a few more years in the cellar to show itself at its best. The 2016 Riserva is stunning from start to finish." Vinous
"A Riserva that starts in the cellar, from the choice of the most suitable oak barrel to be aged to 60 weights, plus 12 more in bottle. Spontaneous fermentation, no filtration, a lush and intense wine. Redcurrants on the nose, with notes of eucalyptus and nutmeg, with a hint of peony. The mouthfeel is tight and dense, with spicy tannins and a long finish." Luca Gardini
"The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016 is a stunning wine and an archetype of the classic Sangiovese from Montalcino. This Riserva is extremely fine and nuanced with the thinnest of fibres washing over the palate like fine silk. The certified organic fruit shapes aromas of cassis, cranberry, peony, tea leaves, orange and rusty nails. The aromas are dense and restrained, but become more expansive and expressive as the wine opens in the glass. It has some power and, above all, a relatively moderate alcohol content of 14%, which makes all the difference in terms of balance and elegance." Wine Advocate
