Italian grandmothers love to give their grandchildren nicknames. And because Gigliola Gianetti's two daughters were so lively, loud and lively as children, Nonna called them "Potazzine". This is what coal tits are called in Montalcino. These little birds also chirp loudly at the high-altitude winery and thus became the heraldic animal. They also adorn the labels of the award-winning wines.
The two daughters Viola and Sofia Gorelli are not only the namesakes of Tenuta Le Potazzine. They are also the actual founding members. The first three hectares of vineyards around the lovingly renovated estate, which dates back to the 14th century, were planted in 1993, practically at the same time as Viola was born. The remaining two hectares, a little further south near Sant'Angelo in Colle, were acquired in 1996, the year daughter Sofia was born. Today, mother and daughters work together very successfully.
The estate is located just four kilometres south-west of Montalcino on a high plateau at an altitude of over 500 metres. When Gigliola Gianetti came to Montalcino in the mid-1980s after her job at Biondi Santi and started a wine shop and restaurant in Piazza Garibaldi, these high locations surrounded by forests were not particularly popular. The sites were labelled as too cool and too windy. Three decades later, nobody would have thought that these high locations would be among the best in terms of climate change. Today, it is precisely here that organic cultivation can be practised much more easily; the constant breeze and the longer vegetation cycle provide precisely the elegance that one can only dream of in some lower, warmer regions.
The rocky soils, interspersed with clay, limestone and iron, and the typical Galestro regulate the more extreme rainfall just as well as the longer periods of drought. If you need a little more warmth and fullness in leaner vintages, the batches from the southern vineyard near Sant'Angelo in Colle compensate for this wonderfully.
For many years, the company has deliberately avoided using barriques and instead ages all its wines in 3,000 to 5,000 Liters Slavonian oak barrels. They ferment only with their own yeasts from the vineyards and their own cellar. Only around 35,000 bottles are produced each year. Mainly Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino. The Brunello Riserva is only available from a few particularly good vintages.
Female power is not an everyday occurrence in Montalcino, but it is a reality at Le Potazzine, where mum Gigliola Gianetti and her two daughters form an energetic team. The numerous national and international awards they have won prove that they are on the right track. SUPERIORE.DE
