    • "Fontanelle" Chardonnay Toscana IGT 2017

      “Fontanelle” Chardonnay Toscana IGT 2017

Fontanelle comes from a single vineyard of the same name at 250m altitude from its own vineyards. Banfi has adapted the concept of his Chardonnay with the vintage 2017. The first edition of this new white top plant presents itself soft, with a delicate wood note, invigorating fruit acid and notes of peach, apple and apricot. It is dry and of high elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is a delightful Tuscan chardonnay with just the right combination of freshness and concentration on the nose – all the more impressive, given it's from the difficult 2017 vintage. Freshly picked daffodils, apricots, peach pit, fresh mangoes and a touch of vanilla. Full-bodied and very oily on the palate, but the medium acidity does well to keep this taut and on topic." Striking Brunello, smelling of fresh roses, sweet red berries, tobacco and mint. Flawless on the palate, pure, sensual, silky, generous. SUPERIORE.DE

"Aromas of spearmint, plum, currant and berry. Full body, firm tannins and a walnut, berry and shaved-chocolate finish. Fresh mushroom and meat." James Suckling

"This wine is on an impressive upward swing in recent years. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura is a dense, full and generous Brunello. It presents classic aromas of blackberry, dried cherry, pressed rose, cola, tobacco and grilled herb. In fact, it really doesn't leave anything out. The vintage heat has been well-managed thanks to careful fruit selection and custom farming studied for this special vineyard plot. Castello Banfi rarely gets anything wrong. • Brunello di Montalcino "Poggio alle Mura" DOCG 2012

Brunello di Montalcino “Poggio alle Mura” DOCG 2012

Of great substance and seductive softness, balance and fruitiness, Poggio alle Mura 2012 shows its best side. Ruby with violet reflections, the fragrance elegant, concentrated and bodily. Great potential for maturity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fresh berry bouquet, sandalwood and leather notes; supple attack, pithy, tannins and acidity well balanced, solid fruit finish, slightly woodsy. Vinum

"Maturing ruby with bricky rim. Big nose with hints of fruit cake and minerals. Sweet palate tightly packed with tannins. The rich fruit closes up on the finish, and the tannins take centre ground at the moment." Jancis Robinson

"Plummy aromas mix in the glass with whiffs of pressed blue flower, vanilla and mocha. The taut structured palate offers dried black cherry, coconut, licorice, espresso and black pepper while firm fine-grained tannins provide the framework. A note of pipe tobacco closes the tight finish. Give it a few more years to unwind and fully develop." Wine Enthusiast

"A dense, burly style, displaying cherry, iron, leather, earth, tobacco and spice flavors. Unyielding and compact now, yet also complex and long." Wine Spectator

"Very ripe and dense with lots of dried-fruit, spice and cedar character. Some cigar box, too. Full-bodied, velvety and rich. Powerful. Give it two to three years of bottle age." James Suckling

"Bright and generous, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura opens to a darkly concentrated appearance and bold aromatic intensity. The wine is forthcoming and immediate in appeal. The bouquet is redolent of blackberry, cherry confit, exotic spice, cola and dark chewing tobacco. The mouthfeel shows a higher degree of tannic astringency, however that may come from the oak. Poggio alle Mura sees up to 80% aged in barrique for two years and the rest in botte grand. I'd suggest giving it a few more years to let that firmness subside and soften." Robert Parker

Brunello di Montalcino “Poggio alle Mura” Riserva DOCG 2010

The 2010 Poggio all Mura Riserva is balanced and refined. Powerful ruby-violet, clear, very berry scent, floral and tobacco aromas. The palate is supple, structured and complex, with polished tannins and excellent length. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is very tannic and powerful with blueberry, blackberry and milk chocolate. Full body, firm tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Shows length and power. A wine for decades ahead. Greatest Banfi red ever."James Suckling

"I'm confident this is the best wine (as a new release) I have tasted from Castello Banfi. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Alle Mura offers rich intensity with seamless integration between its primary fruit aromas and background oak shadings. It is distinguished by elegant tones of licorice, dark mineral and cola that are associated with the six-year aging process required of Brunello Riserva. The bouquet shows enormous depth and fluid nuances of spice and chocolate that add plumpness, opulence and softness. The wine shows a rich and well extracted mouthfeel that is impressive both in terms of consistency and persistence. A bright flash of acidity bodes well for this wine's future cellar evolution."Robert Parker

"The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio alle Mura pushes the Brunello boundaries to an extreme. It will probably not appeal to everyone, but no matter how you cut it, this Riserva does indeed offer a memorable and delectable experience. This was a difficult vintage that shows beautifully in this bottling. A dark, inky appearance gives way to bold aromas of pressed fruit, prune and dark spice. The tannins show a degree of softness and are utterly void of that green, astringent after-bite you sometimes get with Brunello. Tangy black pepper and licorice add liveliness to the long finish." "Dark and impenetrable, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio alle Mura offers heavy notes of savory spice, teriyaki, tar, darkened fruit and Spanish cedar that contribute to the wine's overwhelming sense of density and richness. The fruit sees a beautiful level of ripeness that is neither heavy nor too sharp. The lavish oak tones add an enormous sense of grip, extraction and power. In fact, the alcohol reads 14.5% and you feel it. Yet, the mouthfeel is surprisingly more elegant than you might expect with a firm tannic skeleton fitted to a fleshy frame of dark berry fruit and blackcurrant. The balanced acidity also heightens the wine's sense of liveliness. This dark Brunello is ready to drink in the mid-term." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Castello Banfi
    Tuscany | Montalcino
    Castello Banfi

The beautiful Castello Banfi winery is not only the largest of its kind in Tuscany, it also uniquely combines tradition with modernity. The one in Sant'Angelo Scali, located near Montalcino, was founded in 1978 by the Italo-Americans John and Harry Mariani from New York. In the homeland of their grandfathers, the two brothers created a huge wine empire in close cooperation with the pioneer oenologist Dr. Ezio Rivella, who has since retired. After purchasing the almost 3,000 hectares of land, the Marianis selected the most preferred sites from different vineyards. Today the estate has a vineyard area of 850 hectares and is connected to a large restaurant and a wine cellar.

Castello Banfi was the first winery in the world to receive an award for its exceptional commitment to the environment and its strong social and ethical commitment. The breeding of new Sangiovese clones has also brought the company much recognition. The vineyards are mainly planted with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, but also with Syrah and white varieties. The Swiss oenologist Rudy Buratty and the agronomist Maurizio Marmugi are responsible for the outstanding and continuous quality of the fifteen outstanding top wines. The interests of the owners are represented by Cristina Mariani-May and her cousin James Mariani. As General Manager, Enrico Viglierchio has carried out the comprehensive control of over 100 hectares of DOCG Montalcino vineyards. Each vineyard is considered individually and vinified separately. All the steps to be taken in the high-tech cellar - from the grape mill to fermentation and bottling - are computer-controlled. The steel and wooden barrels are developed by our own team of technicians.

Cristina Mariani-May succeeded years ago in initiating the rebirth of Brunello. She was instrumental in promoting the reputation of this truly royal wine as an important ambassador for Italy. In addition to the award-winning Brunello di Montalcino, the Chianti Classico from Banfi has also received many awards. SUPERIORE.DE

"Castello Banfi should be proclaimed the winner of all price categories. The estate of the Italian-American family Mariani offers something for every purse, the best kind is guaranteed."Gambero Rosso
