“Belguardo V” Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC 2021
This Vermentino cru is the result of a study project in the vineyard and in the winery and comes from two clones each from Corsica and Sardinia. "Belguardo V" (formerly "Codice V") displays the most distinctive characteristics of Tyrrhenian Vermentino and thus epitomises the typical Vermentino as the Mazzei family understands it.
Fresh and bright citrus flavours with white flowers, honeysuckle and cut grass. Sunny, savoury and very mineral on the palate with the typical Vermentino structure. Taut on the final and with promising ageing potential. 30% of the wine is matured on the fine lees in amphorae. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, sparkling straw yellow colour. On the nose, initially fresh asparagus, then citrus fruit, elderflower, medium-bodied. Fresh on the palate, on stone fruit, salty and racy, slightly phenolic on the final." Falstaff
"Intense straw yellow colour. Restrained but concentrated on the nose, with hints of cedar, salty minerals and a hint of bread crust. Still somewhat restrained on the palate, with notes of lemon, rhubarb and peach and a fine citric nerve running through the fruit." Jancis Robinson
"Notes of peach stones, sliced apples, crushed almonds and acacia blossom. Medium-bodied, somewhat waxy and phenolic, with taut acidity and a long, somewhat tight finish. With a mineral backbone." James Suckling
"The Belguardo V is a white wine that is exemplary for the Maremma. The aromas of lemon, lime and apple mingle with floral and almond nuances, while the powerful, creamy, slightly honeyed palate combines juiciness with a savoury line that runs through the core of juicy green and yellow fruit. Soft and soothing, airy and fresh, this is a fantastic wine for the table that will also cellar well." Decanter
"The Belguardo Mazzei 2021 Maremma Toscana Vermentino Superiore Belguardo V is somewhat closed at first glance, but it slowly reveals fruit, preserved lemon, quince and soft honey that runs through the entire nose. It opens up and is very generous to all the senses after a minute or two in the glass. The wine has undergone a long maceration on the skins and matures on the fine lees in a combination of amphorae and stainless steel." Wine Advocate
"The tart nose is both citrusy and floral, with aromas of lemon, lime, daffodil, jasmine and yellow and green apple. The palate remains simultaneously sour and lush, with melon and grapefruit flavors joining the fun, before a salty, nutty finish and a lightning bolt of acid provide a welcome contrast." "Intense and deep dark ruby red. Noble nose of fine wood spice, dark chocolate, blackberry, sage and ripe wild strawberries, balsamic. Dense and rich on the palate, spans a wide arc, dark and ripe fruit, multilayered." Falstaff
"An earthy, meaty version, this is nonetheless saturated with fruit, exhibiting plum, cherry, earth, leather, sanguine and saline flavors. Dense with tannins, this leaves a mouthcoating yet fresh impression on the finish." Wine Spectator
"A pretty blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc with dark berries, blueberries and hints of walnuts. Full body, firm tannins and a polished and caressing finish." James Suckling
"This is a terrific wine, both opulent and generous. The 2016 Maremma Toscana Tenuta Belguardo is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc that adopts a playfully rich and contemporary style with plenty of southern Tuscan sunshine locked deep within the dark ripeness and softness of the fruit. This vintage, with its hot sunny days and cool nights, delivers precision and balance throughout. This is the top-end wine from the Mazzei family's property, Tenuta Belguardo, along the Tuscan Coast." Wine Advocate

The Marchesi Mazzei family has been inseparably linked to Tuscany and viticulture since the 11th century. Ser Lapo Mazzei was the author of a historical document in which the term "Chianti" was first mentioned. The Castello di Fonterutoli has been the ancestral seat since 1435 and is known to every lover of Italian wine. In the 1990s, the Mazzei family also acquired the Tenuta Belguardo, with 70 hectares of land in the hills between Grosseto and Montiano in the southernmost part of Tuscany, the Maremma.
After an elaborate and long analysis of the unique terroir on partly quite steep hills, which are foothills of extinct volcanoes and the Ore Mountains in the hinterland, it was decided to plant mainly autochthonous grape varieties such as Vermentino, Alicante and Sangiovese and only a few international vines such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah. 5,500 to 6,000 vines per hectare are relatively large in this region. The extremely good aeration of the Tyrrhenian Sea, only a few kilometres away, its light reflections and the low precipitation make it possible. The limestone and sandstone soils are mineral - the Etruscans already mined iron ore, silver and copper in the "Colline Metallifere Grossetane" of the mountains at the back. In freshly ploughed fields, the earth still shines a distinct reddish brown. The 34 hectares of vineyards lie between 50 and 180 metres above sea level and drop steeply to the south and southwest.
This influence of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the interplay of microclimate, light and soil enables the cultivation of a wide variety of vines. For this reason, many grape varieties are experimented with on newly acquired areas. One can be curious. The Marchesi Mazzei have achieved one thing in a very short time: to set new quality standards with the Tenuta Belguardo in the Maremma and to achieve the highest ratings in the region with their wines.
In addition to Castello di Fonterutoli and Tenuta Belguardo, the Zisola winery near Noto in southwestern Sicily belongs to the Mazzei family, where olive oil and citrus fruits are also cultivated. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Maremma branch of the Mazzei family gained general recognition, virtually in the form of a lightning action, thereby underpinning the already undisputed reputation of one of the most prestigious Italian wine houses."Gambero Rosso
