    About the winemakers

    Colle Massari

    Together with his wife Maria and sister Maria Iris, Claudio Tipa has built up a small wine empire from several branches scattered throughout Tuscany, starting with the purchase of the Castello Colle Massari winery. Located in the northern Maremma in Montecucco DOC, between Montalcino and the vineyards of Morellino di Scansano, at an altitude of 320 metres above sea level, the vineyard not only fulfilled a long-cherished dream of the family, but also brought with it a significant upgrading of the area of cultivation that was ideally suited to the cultivation of Sangiovese.

    Claudio Tipa, native Sicilian and president of the Consorzio Montecucco, has granted the Tuscan showpiece variety, which was selected in cooperation with the University of Pisa, a lion's share of around 80 percent of the red grapes in the vineyards. The white grape varieties of the Vermentino are of similar importance. Until today, Colle Massari has earned an excellent reputation beyond the borders of the Maremma. It is therefore no surprise that the Wine Guide Gambero Rossohas named the exemplary production site "Winery of the Year" in 2014.

    The owners, who went to work with great passion, not only bought land after the acquisition of the estate, but also undertook a complete restructuring of the company. The vineyards and the cellar were fundamentally modernised with considerable financial means. The estate is situated in an area characterised by a particularly favourable microclimate with good ventilation and wide variations in temperature. The steep vineyards are cultivated according to the traditional methods of the cordon and double Guyot systems. From the very beginning, the winery has been working according to the principles of certified organic viticulture.

    In the imposing cellar the grapes and must are processed on four levels without pumps and other mechanical aids. The cuvées are fermented in 1,000 litre conical wooden vats and only processed manually. All other wines undergo the fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Not least because of optimal conditions in the parcels and in the cellar, the wines of the Tipa family, which radiate a lot of personality, have continuously gained in quality. Most recently, the Riserve of Montecucco Sangiovese Lombrone and Montecucco Rosso Colle Massari were often among the most outstanding crescences. Today Colle Massari Spa includes Colle Massari, Grattamacco in the Bolgheri area and Poggio di Sotto in Montalcino. These also occupy top positions in their respective regions. SUPERIORE.DE
