“Vin Ruspo” Rosato di Carmignano DOC 2022 (BIO)
Vin Ruspo means "stolen wine". Originally, the vineyard workers took a portion of the young must every year to drink as refreshment during and after work. Strong, sparkling rosé. Fruity, floral nose, fresh on the palate with good acid wire and a melting texture that makes this wine an excellent food companion or sun-drenched soloist. A sophisticated drop in its own right. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dusty rose and crushed stone give way to freshly sliced green apples as the 2022 Rosato di Carmignano opens in the glass. This soothes with its round textures and crisp orchard fruits as yellow citrus nuances add contrast toward the close. The 2022 leaves a crunchy sensation through the finish, tapering off with tension. A lemon rind concentration puckers the cheeks." Vinous

“Villa di Capezzana” Rosso Carmignano DOCG 2020 (BIO)
Villa di Capezzana is considered one of the longest-lived wines in Tuscany, with a vertical tasting of 20 vintages dating back to 1937 - none of the vintages showed any signs of fatigue. The wine is fermented spontaneously and matured in large and small wooden barrels, a third of the small wood is renewed every year. Dark ruby red in colour. Black cherries, blackberries, cassis and fine woods dominate the nose. On the palate, the wine is firm, well-structured and has a long finish. Decanting recommended. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark, bright ruby red colour. Inviting nose of wax and grated forest fruits, with subtle hints of honey and dried rose petals on the finish. Initially juicy on the palate, with good tension and a slightly salty undertone." Falstaff
"Opening like a veritable spice box, the 2020 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana entices with its autumnal blend of allspice, clove, and star anise before giving way to steeped plums and sage. It’s silky and refined, with supple textures and ripe red and blue fruits that swirl across a stream of vibrant acidity. It leaves a pleasantly chewy sensation while finishing with fine-grained tannins and a staining of primary concentration. Wait a full minute and hints of white pepper still linger. Wow. While richer than usual and easier to appreciate out of the gate, the 2020 is balanced for a long and steady evolution." Vinous

“Ghiaie della Furba” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019 (BIO)
Ghiaie della Furba means "pebbles of the Furba stream" and there is a reason for this, as the vines for this wine grow on the river pebbles on the banks of this stream. It is one of the very first "Supertuscans". After an hour in the carafe, this extremely complex red reveals wonderfully clear, dark fruit, blackberries and cassis, as well as coffee notes, dark chocolate and spices. Its very good structure and personality are impressive. It is already very accessible today (with aeration), but is still hiding its great potential for the next decade. SUPERIORE.DE
"A lively, elegant red wine with aromas and flavours of black cherries, blackcurrants, violets, cedar and tobacco. Balanced, while a sweep of firm, dense tannins support the long, fruity and flavoursome finish." Wine Spectator
"The nose is like a garden after a storm, with aromas of fruit and flowers mixing with the stones crushed underfoot and the saltiness of still-wet air. Red plums, mission figs, roses and violets continue onto the palate, with umami undertones setting up a coffee and chili pepper finish." Wine Enthusiast

“Trefiano 40 anni” Rosso Carmignano Riserva DOCG 2019 (BIO)
The wine comes from a neighbouring walled vineyard around the Villa di Trefiano, which produces a wonderfully elegant variant of Carmignano. Trefiano Riserva remains in used 350-litre tonneaux for 18 months after spontaneous fermentation. Bright, elegant ruby red colour. Black cherry and cassis on the nose, with an intense, ripe and juicy plum flavour. Long, multi-layered and complex on the palate, the Riserva needs a little more air and shows a little more depth than the classic Carmignano. The 10% Canaiolo component ensures its irresistible fragrance and complexity, simply marvellous! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, brightening ruby red colour. Fragrant nose, inviting, of ripe raspberries, cherries, with fine mint flavours, blood orange, wax. Red berry fruit on the palate, juicy, with a fine salinity, very elegant at the front." Falstaff
"The 2019 Carmignano Riserva Trefiano keeps the taster at the edge of the glass, taking in its autumnal blend of clove and cinnamon-dusted black cherries, all lifted by hints of sage. This is youthfully tense with a tart core of wild berry fruits and zesty citrus. Slowly mounting tannins mingle with saline minerals toward the close, finishing staining, long and epically structured, with a crunchy sensation that lingers on. Bury the 2019 Trefiano deep in the cellar." Vinous
"Spicy and a little earthy with ripe dark fruit, notes of cured meat, walnuts and bark. Medium to full-bodied with firm, slightly firm tannins. Polished and chalky with juicy fruit underneath. Velvety finish." James Suckling

“Ugo Contini Bonacossi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018 (BIO)
This impressive red comes from the single vineyard "Vitticciana", which was created by the "Godfather of Carmignano" Ugo Contini Bonacossi especially for a pure Sangiovese wine due to its perfect orientation. It is only produced in the best years, when it presents itself as a multi-layered wine with fine fruit and fine-grained tannins. After a few years of ageing in the bottle, it can easily hold its own with some of the best Brunello di Montalcino. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, medium ruby red with a slightly brightening rim. Red sour cherries and pickled plums on the nose, with some verbena and spice in the background. Velvety tannins on the palate, well-balanced, still a little young on the final." Falstaff
"A hint of floral and spicy notes, with beautiful, pure fruit underneath. Very well-managed tannins and a long finish." Decanter
"A hint of dusty spices and pencil shavings accompany the ripe cherry and plum fruit flavours. Juicy and very lively on the palate with medium to full body and firm, metallic tannins that are firmly attached to the finish. Needs time." James Suckling
"The 2018 Ugo Contini Bonacossi, a varietal Sangiovese, evolves in the glass with a rich blend of cherry and plum sauce, accentuated and lifted by hints of sage and sweet mint. This is velvety smooth yet full of zesty energy, with a core of nervous acidity that enlivens its sour red and black berry fruits. The 2018 finishes long and staining yet light on its feet, leaving edgy tannins to resonate as the cheeks pucker with youthful tension. I expect the 2018 to evolve sooner than bigger vintages, but with that said, it is no less pleasurable." Vinous

Vin Santo di Carmignano Riserva DOC 2014 dolce
Deep dark yellow. Rich, almost opulent impressions of candied apricots, orange zest and traces of fine yellow flowers on the nose. On the palate, fabulously viscous texture, multi-layered, very concentrated taste of candied fruits with a wonderfully polished sweetness. A great Vin Santo with a long, persistent finish and made to last. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dried figs, dried persimmon, toffee and a nutty character. Full and viscous with dried blood orange, spices and some salinity to it. Tense and textured with a delicate sweetness that has some citrusy edge to it." James Suckling
"The 2014 Vinsanto Riserva is a dark amber color in the glass. Spiced orange peels, dusty dried flowers, cloves and baked pears follow a mesmerizing mix of shaved cedar and pine. Frankly, there’s something new each time I return to the glass. This floods the palate with ample weight while showing a sweet and sour mix of vanilla custards, toffee, candied citrus and salted almond, which adds amazing contrasts. This lingers impossibly long yet incredibly fresh, repleting its aromatics throughout as hints of hazelnut and cocoa fade. The 2014 Vinsanto Riserva makes for a fantastic wine experience that should not be missed." Vinous
"Very dense, but with pinpoint freshness and cohesion. Extremely rich layers of apricot jam, dried apricots, and honey with a lovely texture and intensity on the refreshing finish." Decanter

It entices with a whiff of saw dust and crushed toasted almond, giving way to dried apricot, nectarine and finally a dusting of cocoa. The Riserva flows across the palate more like nectar than wine, with a mix of sweet autumnal spice and peach preserves, all held together perfectly by brisk acidity. The 2016 is amazingly long, balanced and complex, leaving a staining of ground ginger and burnt sugar. Through it all, the mouth is left watering as nearly a minute goes by and hints of brown butter and sweet cinnamon carry on. Medium to full body. The tannins are well developed, firm but polished and unobtrusive. Long finish." James Suckling
"The Ghiaie della Furba 2020 opens with a mentholated freshness that combines minty herbs, spiced orange peel and redcurrants. It envelops the palate with a texture of pure silk and quickly gains grip with a core of tart red berries and acidic citrus, while the angular tannins pinch the cheeks. It finishes with admirable length, structure and concentration, leaving a pleasantly bitter aftertaste as notes of cedar and savoury herbal notes slowly fade. The 2020 needs time, and lots of it. Ghiaie della Furba is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Syrah and 25% Merlot." Vinous
"The nose is a garden after a storm, as a fresh floral quality mingles with the stoniness of still-damp air. On the palate, that stony element persists, while a blast of pepper, a flash of astringent red fruit and lively acid sparkle above grippy, persistent tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Our greatest good is our land. It's been feeding us for generations, and we want it to stay that way. So we must treat it with respect," is the motto of the Contini Bonacossi family. Well, that's what almost all wine producers say. But hardly anyone formulated it as forcefully and convincingly as the over 90-year-old senior, Conte Ugo Contini Bonacossi, who was already over 90 at the time.
Of course, this has a background, because the first attempts to switch to organic cultivation ended in a disaster. So you started a second time, slower and more careful. You could say over decades. New vineyards were planted more densely, with 6000 to 9000 vines per hectare, enormous hours invested and finally all vineyards and olive groves were certified organic.
Finally, the splendid palazzo from the early Renaissance, which sits on the hills near Carmigiano, just a few kilometres west of Florence, was renovated in an exemplary manner and transformed into a lively meeting place. It was also Conte Ugo who made Carmigiano a DOC again, against all resistance from the authorities, by proving that Carmigiano already existed a quarter of a millennium ago as a wine-growing region with defined borders. Actually, the Etruscans cultivated wine here 3,000 years ago.
A vineyard Capezzana is documented in writing in the year 804. The Contini Bonacossi family bought the property from the Rothschilds in the 1920s. It is said that the same Cabernet Sauvignon clones grow here as on Château Lafite. Cabernet has a very long tradition here, in addition to Sangiovese. Vittorio Contini Bonacossi, who managed the estate until his surprising death, also loved autochthonous varieties and planted more Canaiolo and Mammolo. Benedetta and Gaddo continue these traditions in cellars and vineyards. The Carmigiano region, which has since been upgraded to DOCG, allows this variety diversity because it wanted to counteract the acidity of Sangiovese. Therefore the wines here are a little rounder, milder than in the rest of the Chianti area and wonderfully fruity, with a very fine tannin structure. To a certain extent elegance with tradition.
Serena, Vittorio's daughter, has now opened the winery to the public and has set up a wine bar, an agriturismo with wonderful rooms and a cooking school. Filippo takes care of the more than 30,000 olive trees, which are cultivated on about 140 hectares and cultivated by hand with the help of countless small farmers. The whole family, not exactly a small one, works in various fields, preserves the tradition and for five generations has carefully linked it with today's times.
The wines have received many awards and prove their maturity potential time and again, as hundreds of bottles of each vintage have been stored for decades. SUPERIORE.DE
