“Barco Reale” Rosso di Carmignano DOC 2017 (BIO)

Purple red with light red reflections. Intense fruity nose of small red berries, cherry and a touch of cedar wood and spices. It is already very accessible at a young age, its rich spectrum of aromas and the finely woven tannin framework ensure great drinkability and a lasting impression. SUPERIORE.DE

"Orange zest, dried cranberries, notes of ash and tar, as well as rosemary all spring from the glass on the nose. There’s impressive polish to the strands of lightly indented tannins which are melded together with bright acidity. Medium-bodied and medium-chewy on the finish." James Suckling

    • "Vin Ruspo" Rosato di Carmignano DOC 2019 (BIO)

“Vin Ruspo” Rosato di Carmignano DOC 2019 (BIO)

Vin Ruspo means "stolen wine." Originally, the winery workers used to divert a part of the young must every year to drink it during and after work to strengthen and rennet it. Strong, sparkling rosé. Fruity, floral nose, fresh on the palate with a good acid wire and an enamel that makes this wine an excellent accompaniment to food or a sun-kissed soloist. A demanding, independent drop. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant orange with a delicate pink tint in the glass. Fine spicy notes, of China bark, white pepper and ripe raspberries. On the palate with pressure, shows fine enamel, straightforward, in the back with present body, good food companion." Falstaff

    • "Villa di Capezzana" Rosso Carmignano DOCG 2016 (BIO)

“Villa di Capezzana” Rosso Carmignano DOCG 2016 (BIO)

Villa di Capezzana is considered one of the most long-lasting wines in Tuscany, a vertical tasting with 20 vintages went back to 1937 - none of the vintages showed signs of fatigue. The wine is fermented spontaneously and aged in large and small wooden barrels, one third of the small wood is renewed every year.

Dark ruby red. Black cherries, blackberries, cassis and noble woods dominate the nose. On the palate the wine is firm, well structured and with a long finish.
      Decanting recommended. SUPERIORE.DE

"Plum and dried orange-peel aromas follow through to a full body and tight, firm tannins. Savory finish. Succulent. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will age nicely." James Suckling

"This pretty red features rose, cherry, strawberry and mineral flavors, staying lean and toned, with terrific balance and energy on the long finish. The mineral element prevails." Wine Spectator

"A mild winter was followed by a rainy spring, giving great water reserves for the summer. The growing season was without extremes, the grapes reaching ripeness after three days of rain in the middle of September. 'All the grapes were perfect,' said Filippo Contini Bonacossi. Indeed, 2016 is one of the best recent vintages in Tuscany. This wine, crimson and dark, is full of concentration and extract without losing grace. Fresh bramble fruits dominated by raspberry are joined by violet, leafy notes and liquorice. The tannins are grainy and masculine, yet precise on the finish. Refreshing and balanced, this is the wine representative of the estate's postmodern winemaking: the first to be officially organic and partially aged in large oak vessels. A great Carmignano." • "Ghiaie della Furba" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

“Ghiaie della Furba” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

Ghiaie della Furba means "pebbles of the Furba stream" and there is a reason for this, because on the pebbles on the banks of this stream the vines stand for this wine. It is one of the first "Supertuscans" ever.

After an hour in the carafe, this extremely complex red wine reveals a wonderfully clear, dark fruit, blackberries and blackcurrants, along with coffee notes, dark chocolate and spices. Impressive its very good structure and personality. It is already easily accessible (with ventilation), but still hides its great potential for the next decade. SUPERIORE.DE

"Lots of spice and intensity here with chocolate, blackberry and coffee aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish." James Suckling

“Trefiano” Rosso Carmignano Riserva DOCG 2013

The wine comes from an adjacent walled vineyard around Villa di Trefiano, which produces a wonderfully elegant variant of Carmignano. Trefiano Riserva remains in used 350-litre tonneaux for 18 months after spontaneous fermentation.

Deep ruby red. In the nose black cherry and blackcurrant, in addition an intensive, ripe and juicy plum. Long, complex and multi-layered, the Riserva needs a little more air and shows a little more depth than the classic Carmignano. The 10% Canaiolo content ensures its irresistible fragrance and complexity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fascinating aromas of blueberries, orange peel and watermelon following through to a full body. Round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Lots of toasted oak showing now, but it should come out beautifully with bottle age." James Suckling

"Balance and harmony are the hallmarks of this red, despite the youthful exuberance. Black cherry, blackberry, plum, iron, earth and underbrush flavors are supported by assertive, dusty tannins, offset by ample fruit and energy." Wine Spectator

"In the 2015 Carmignano Riserva Trefiano, Sangiovese (80%) is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Canaiolo. This wine offers steady elegance and a compact, crisp approach that comes from the two Tuscan grapes. That small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, on the other hand, adds textual richness and firm tannins. This is a beautifully fleshed out and generous red wine from a very warm and sunny vintage in Tuscany." Robert Parker

This impressive red wine comes from the single vineyard "Vitticciana", which was created by the "Godfather of Carmignano" Ugo Contini Bonacossi because of its perfect orientation especially for a pure Sangiovese wine. It is produced only in the best years, in 2015 it is incredibly complex, with fine fruit and fine-grained tannin. After a few years of ageing in the bottle, it can easily compete with some of the best Brunello di Montalcino. SUPERIORE.DE

    About the winemakers
    Tenuta di Capezzana
    Tuscany | Chianti
    Tenuta di Capezzana

"Our greatest good is our land. It's been feeding us for generations, and we want it to stay that way. So we must treat it with respect," is the motto of the Contini Bonacossi family. Well, that's what almost all wine producers say. But hardly anyone formulated it as forcefully and convincingly as the over 90-year-old senior, Conte Ugo Contini Bonacossi, who was already over 90 at the time.

Of course, this has a background, because the first attempts to switch to organic cultivation ended in a disaster. So you started a second time, slower and more careful. You could say over decades. New vineyards were planted more densely, with 6000 to 9000 vines per hectare, enormous hours invested and finally all vineyards and olive groves were certified organic.

Finally, the splendid palazzo from the early Renaissance, which sits on the hills near Carmigiano, just a few kilometres west of Florence, was renovated in an exemplary manner and transformed into a lively meeting place. It was also Conte Ugo who made Carmigiano a DOC again, against all resistance from the authorities, by proving that Carmigiano already existed a quarter of a millennium ago as a wine-growing region with defined borders. Actually, the Etruscans cultivated wine here 3,000 years ago.

A vineyard Capezzana is documented in writing in the year 804. The Contini Bonacossi family bought the property from the Rothschilds in the 1920s. It is said that the same Cabernet Sauvignon clones grow here as on Château Lafite. Cabernet has a very long tradition here, in addition to Sangiovese. Vittorio Contini Bonacossi, who managed the estate until his surprising death, also loved autochthonous varieties and planted more Canaiolo and Mammolo. Benedetta and Gaddo continue these traditions in cellars and vineyards. The Carmigiano region, which has since been upgraded to DOCG, allows this variety diversity because it wanted to counteract the acidity of Sangiovese. Therefore the wines here are a little rounder, milder than in the rest of the Chianti area and wonderfully fruity, with a very fine tannin structure. To a certain extent elegance with tradition.

Serena, Vittorio's daughter, has now opened the winery to the public and has set up a wine bar, an agriturismo with wonderful rooms and a cooking school. Filippo takes care of the more than 30,000 olive trees, which are cultivated on about 140 hectares and cultivated by hand with the help of countless small farmers. The whole family, not exactly a small one, works in various fields, preserves the tradition and for five generations has carefully linked it with today's times.

The wines have received many awards and prove their maturity potential time and again, as hundreds of bottles of each vintage have been stored for decades. SUPERIORE.DE
