“Cremisi” Rosato Toscana IGT 2022 (BIO)
That Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara is not only clearly ahead with the famous Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the family winery also proves with its Rosato Cremisi. Enticing and captivating nose of dried orange peel, flowers, ginger and nectarine. Soft and supple on the palate, yet very dynamic and energetic after citrus fruits, peppery herbs and green melon. The drinking flow is enormous, the salty tension combined with a subtle tangerine note provides lots of fun, excitement and freshness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, bright salmon colour. Fruity and inviting on the nose, on fresh strawberry and raspberry, plus a hint of herbal spice. On the palate a combination of pleasant fruit sweetness and invigorating acidity, juicy to the finish." Falstaff

“Campo della Pieve” Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG 2021 (BIO)
The Campo della Pieve vineyard (approx. 380 metres above sea level) faces south-west and has thicker soils and more tufa. The most recent parcel, which was recently acquired, is the highest to date at 400 metres above sea level. The site is more susceptible to wind and has good water retention thanks to the heavier clay soils.
Bright, light golden yellow colour. Delicate nose of fresh yellow apple, some peach, lemon balm, flint in the background. Round and smooth on the palate with a lovely balance between acidity, freshness, citrus and tropical fruit, plus a subtle minerality. In keeping with the characteristics of the Vernaccia grape, the wine is not overly fruity, but displays an exciting spiciness that lends it personality and an additional arc of tension. SUPERIORE.DE
"Superb fruit flavours; pleasing with its polish, elegance and finesse, which it also gets from the longer maceration." Vinum
"Pale straw yellow with a golden centre. Fragrant and elegant bouquet of yellow apple and lemon balm, with a flinty aftertaste. Fresh and almost sparkling on the palate, with a direct attack, very fresh and taut, with a long finish." Falstaff
"The Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara 2021 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Campo della Pieve has a fresh and bright bouquet. There are aromas of orchard fruit, golden apple and hints of spicy saffron that I always find in my favorite Vernaccia-based wines. This cement-aged expression is primary and young, but it also has the depth and spicy mineral notes to give this bottle an extra edge." Wine Advocate
"A Vernaccia of crystalline elegance. Fermented in steel, matured on the lees. Citrusy on the nose, especially Sorrento lemon and apricot, a beautiful floral profile with hawthorn that enhances the sense of smell. Spicy on the palate, with good freshness and crispness until the end of the sip." Luca Gardini

In the region around the imposing towers of the medieval town of San Gimignano, oenologist Alessio Logi has dedicated himself to what is probably Tuscany's most famous white wine. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is one of the oldest white wines in Italy, mentioned in records dating back to 1276 and in Dante's Divine Comedy. This white wine is therefore characterised by a centuries-old history of great storage potential and complex flavour aromas.
The Tuscan Vernaccia grape variety, which however should not be confused with the red Vernatsch from South Tyrol, captivates with a great expressive potential, through which it shows how the territory and its cultivation affect the taste. The young winemaker was inspired by his father Mario to extract the complex flavours of this white variety from his vineyards in an environmentally friendly way.
In a region as famous for red wine as Tuscany, Alessio has been passionately pressing his highly awarded Vernaccia white wines at his Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara winery since 2002. He is assisted in the cellar by his older brothers Giampiero and Stefano, while their eighty-something father Mario still sets the pace in the vineyards.
"My father taught me that the vines are a reflection of the soil and that you can improve the quality in the cellar, but not change it," Alessio tells us in conversation. That is why the clayey soils of his vineyards have been cultivated only according to organic guidelines from day one. Since working closely with the gifted oenologist Nicola Berti, the winemaker has also been working with much shorter maceration times, bringing out the fruity, spicy taste of the Vernaccia grape and its typically fine, tart almond note much more precisely.
What impresses us most about this family-run winery is the combination of the father's many years of experience and the contemporary awareness of the three sons to dedicate themselves to their Vernaccia production with respect for the environment - which is undoubtedly reflected in the great personality, structure and storability of their organic white wines.
From the refreshingly fruity Selvabianca, fermented in stainless steel, Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara's portfolio ranges to creamier, richer versions such as the powerful single-vineyard Campo alla Pieve or the 25-hectolitre barrel-aged Riserva Albereta. This diversity does credit to the history and reputation of this ancient white wine from San Gimignano and is a guarantee of uncompromising top quality. SUPERIORE.DE
