"Cherries, wet stones, graphite and balsamic vinegar on the nose with hints of earth and wild herbs lead to a palate that is rather stony and cherry red, finishing with a fresh, herbal burst of mint and fennel." Wine Enthusiast
"The Chianti Classico Riserva 2020 shows notes of preserved dark cherries, mocha, liquorice, cinnamon and new leather. On the palate, the 2020 is deep and rich, with great depth that shows beautifully today. It's a rich, heady Riserva to savour now and for years to come." Wine Enthusiast
"The Chianti Classico Riserva 2020 is a soft and supple wine with plenty of dark fruit, cherry and toasted spice, reflecting a warm growing season. “Ilatraia” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019 (BIO)
Opulent nose of red berries, pleasant smoky notes and fine herbal spice. Opulent and round on the palate, the fine tannins give the wine a delicate but definite structure and the necessary seriousness until the long, soft finish. The well-integrated wood and the fruit of the Cabernet grape find an exciting symbiosis with the rather strict and taut Petit Verdot style in a very harmonious way. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, intense ruby. Opens with slightly smoky notes, then lots of spices, coriander seeds and cardamom, finally dark plum. Full and intense in attack and course, opens with gripping, hearty tannin, grippy, but also shows lots of juicy fruit, long finish." Falstaff
"The 2019 Ilatraia, Brancaia's top wine from Maremma, is racy and lush from the start. A whole range of spicy and savoury overtones envelop the dark blue and blackish fruit. This heady blend is very expressive today. Blackberries, espresso, liquorice and leather climax the lush finish." Vinous
"This wine strides forward with an extremely herbaceous nose, from oregano to thyme to tomato leaf. It also conveys the peppery savoriness of capsicum plus the depth of newly turned soil and a final pop of sour cherries. The palate continues the theme, with more peppers and cherries, but also sundried tomatoes and balsamic vinegar. Polished and consistent tannins make for a fun but slick balance of savory and sweet." Wine Enthusiast
"This is a generous and layered expression with dark fruits, baker's chocolate and elegant spice. I tasted this wine alongside the 2018 vintage, which showed much more balance due to the additional year of ageing. Based on this observation, I recommend a longer drinking window for this wine. The 2019 shows plenty of primary fruit, brightness and concentration." Wine Advocate
"It has aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, black olives, cedar, dark chocolate, pralines, salted almonds and mint. Also some gunmetal and graphite. Creamy and flattering, with velvety tannins and a full body. Delicious notes of salted chocolate. So much power and concentration, yet it remains elegant. Long." James Suckling

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Here comes the debut vintage of Barbara Widmer's Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. It is vinified from the estate's best Sangiovese grapes, all of which come from clay soils at an altitude of about 200 metres. Complex and very aromatic bouquet with notes of red fruits, herbs, leather, liquorice, rounded off by a fine toasted note. Multilayered and radiant on the palate, never opulent or broad, the well-balanced tannins lead it into a deep and refined finish. Brancaia's Gran Selezione combines the unmistakably aristocratic style of a single-varietal Sangiovese with impressive elegance, even at a young age. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red. Bright ruby red with a gently lightening rim. In the nose at first fine leather-spicy, then after pepper and malt, in the reverberation fine fruit nuances. On the palate radiant, very fruity with fine salty notes in the undertone, shows good pressure, at the same time very elegant and finesse-rich, lingers long." Falstaff
"Made entirely with Sangiovese, this opens with aromas of violet, mocha and underbrush. The full-bodied, balanced palate offers Marasca cherry, cinnamon and tobacco alongside fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"Round and solidly built, providing support for cherry, plum, earth and woodsy underbrush notes. Starts out juicy, turning dry and leaving a tactile impression on the finish." Wine Spectator
"Introducing the first-ever Gran Selezione from Brancaia, and making an impressive debut, the organic 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is all Sangiovese fermented with spontaneous yeasts and submitted to a careful 18 months of oak aging. Barbara Widmer and her team hit the right chords in terms of balance, clarity of flavors and intensity. There is a crunchy side to the wine that you only ever taste in the most expertly made Sangiovese-based wines. Freshness abounds with floral aromas, tart fruit and cherry." Wine Advocate

"Sparkling ruby red colour, slight edge brightening. Complex on the nose, sour cherry, cigar box, subtle ethereal notes, reminiscent of eucalyptus. Elegant, prancing on the palate, vibrant acidity, silky tannins, lots of herbs towards the end, lingering finish." Falstaff
"This is another impressive organic wine from the talented winemaking team at Brancaia and owner Barbara Widmer. The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is rich and endowed with dark cherry, spice, clove and grilled herbs. This vintage is a real pleasure to drink straight away." Wine Advocate
"Captivating bouquet of berries and lilac, casually accompanied by spicy notes; the attack is pithy, the lively acidity and excellent tannins well balanced, the finish long on notes of fresh currants and lots of suppleness. Can still mature." Vinum
"Notes of ripe cherries and redcurrants with savoury herbs, ground spices and crushed stones. Full and structured with dense and compact tannins that are ripe and well integrated into the wine. “Il Blu” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020 (BIO)
Since its debut in 1988, Il Blu has been the result of constant striving for perfection. With ultra-fine tannins and a smooth and full finish, this full-bodied wine captivates with its complexity and elegance. Il Blu is made from only the best hand-picked and selected grapes from the two vineyards in the Chianti region. Although Sangiovese plays a leading role in the blend, its influence and signature contribute significantly to the overall identity of this special wine.
Rich, unfathomable ruby red. Explosive aromas of black cherries and blackberries on the nose. The texture is wonderfully balanced, on the palate Il Blu presents itself fresh, persistently powerful and with wonderfully articulated tannin. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red with a subtly lightening rim. Spicy, noble nose of ripe sour cherries, blackcurrants and elegant use of wood. Juicy on the palate, with clear, well-developed fruit, with still young tannin, still needs some time, salty and punchy on the final." Falstaff
"This is an organic blend that enjoys near iconic status here in Tuscany. Thanks to its long track record, you can count on this Tuscan blended red to deliver top quality. The Brancaia 2020 Il Blu is a full-bodied red with sweet fruit flavors and a rich, velvety texture." Wine Advocate
"Shows a resinous note from the oak that envelops ripe black cherry, plum, leather, mineral and tobacco flavors. This red just keeps building in intensity and fruit on the palate, ending with a succulent, fruit- and spice-infused aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"The 2020 Il Blu is superb. Dark and mysterious at first, the Blu offers up an exotic mélange of blue fruits, mocha, new leather, licorice and lavender. Bright acids play off some of the more over leanings beautifully. Il Blu has long been one of the most distinctive wines in Chianti Classico. The 2020 is another fine edition of Il Blu." Vinous
"Attractive blueberries, brambles and cherries with spiced orange peel and lilac blossom, as well as some smoky dark spices and cocoa. Full, concentrated and very tense, with tightly packed but very polished and fine tannins. Shows a succulence and vibrancy to the fruit with a mineral, slightly chalky finish." James Suckling

Deep dark ruby.
"This blend comes from the Maremma and already shows the generosity of the local landscape in the aroma. Wonderfully juicy dark cherries and morello cherries blend skilfully with chocolate and smoky, dark-roasted notes. Elegant in the mouth, the fruit is precise and finely contoured despite its concentration, the grippy, fine-pored and noble tannin and the juicy acidity wonderfully embrace the meltingly dense body, and a fine dark chocolate flashes in the final. Weinwisser
"Rich ruby red. In the nose of ink, graphite, noble wood, then blackberry and truffle. On the palate with great, polished and clear fruit, spreads out nicely, dense and elegant, radiant, stays long." Falstaff
"The 2018 Ilatraia is a heady, potent wine that captures all of the natural density of Maremma. A blast of black plum fruit, chocolate, dried herbs, licorice and copious French oak lends notable exuberance. Ilatraia doesn't quite have the open-knit charm of most Bolgheri reds, likely because of the booming structure of Petit Verdot and its formidable tannic clout. Even so, there is plenty to like, especially for readers who enjoy big Tuscan wines." Vinous
"Fresh and juicy, this red combines density with finesse, offering plum and black cherry flavors that ply the grainy texture, while vibrant acidity keeps this focused and long. Floral, mineral and rosemary accents chime in as this stays persistent." Wine Spectator
"This is a seriously gorgeous wine, seriously. The Brancaia 2018 Ilatraia impresses from the start, thanks to the wonderful intensity and clarity of its dark fruit, spice and delicately toasted aromas. This full-bodied wine does a terrific job of presenting an Italian or clearly Mediterranean side of the blend with rosemary, dried lavender bud and some of the warm earthy aromas that remind me of walking through a grove of chestnut trees in the fall. This offers a twofold punch of power and elegance." Wine Advocate
"Blackberries and currants with some violet and walnut undertones. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, polished tannins that show balance and focus. Stone and mahogany. Just a hint of chocolate. Racy and fine." James Suckling

Full, concentrated and very tense, with tightly packed but very polished and fine tannins. Shows a succulence and vibrancy to the fruit with a mineral, slightly chalky finish." James Suckling

Il Blu occupies a firm place among the top wines of Italy and is already considered a classic by many wine lovers. The noble drop comes from the Casa Brancaia in Castellina. "My parents went on holiday to Tuscany in 1981, fell in love with the area, the people and of course with the good food and delicious wine. So they looked for a holiday home - and bought Brancaia, including the vines," says Barbara Widmer, the Swiss woman who actually wanted to become an architect but then decided to study oenology and in 1998 took over her parents' now highly successful winery.
The career changers from Zurich managed to win first place at a major Chianti Classico tasting after only two years of "hobby wine production". And this in not exactly easy times. The rapid initial success made people want to do more and so a steady expansion of activities developed. In 1989 the Widmer couple acquired the Poppi winery in Radda, which has since become the family estate. And nine years later the third estate was founded, in the Morellino di Scansano wine growing area in the Maremma near Grosseto. There the Supertuscan "Ilatraia" is pressed from the idiosyncratic composition with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
Since 1998, Barbara Widmer has been responsible for the wine production and the vineyards as head and leading oenologist. She is supported by the cellar masters Amar Amarouche (in the Maremma) and Fabrizio Benedetti (in the Chianti area) and the excellent oenologist Carlo Ferrini as advisor.
Environmental protection is a priority at Brancaia. Barbara Widmer works according to the guidelines of integrated production. The vineyards are treated with sustainable care, and individual sick or dead vines are manually replanted and nurtured until the roots are strong enough. With the 2019 vintage, the conversion to organic cultivation is completed and all wines are certified organic from this vintage onwards.
Brancaia has long since joined the top group of Tuscan producers. The wines are always at the top of the list at tastings and are highly praised by international wine critics. The elegant wines are matured in two cellars (Chianti Classico and Maremma), which were built according to the most modern principles, in modern containers. New cement and steel fermenters, up to French barriques and tonneaux. Never perceptible, purity, fruit and elegance are always in the foreground.
The Tuscany parade variety Sangiovese is dominant in the Chianti Classico Riserva and Chianti Classico, but also plays a significant role in Il Blu and the base wine Tre, whose grapes come from all three wineries. SUPERIORE.DE
