“Torricella” Chardonnay Toscana IGT 2022
According to Francesco Ricasoli, Torricella is "the white soul of Brolio" and comes from a vineyard that was originally planted with Malvasia Toscana vines and was located near a well-known Tuscan estate. This estate was called Torricella. Since 2003, this vineyard has been planted entirely with Chardonnay vines, producing a white wine with enormous ageing potential. Francesco comments: "With Torricella, a very great white wine was created from the very first vintage, which is able to give its best even after many years of ageing. It is surprising that even 50 or even 70-year-old vintages are still lively and fresh. Take a look at the analysis data - alcohol, total acidity, pH value and volatile acidity - which very often prove the longevity of this wine."
The complex bouquet is reminiscent of citrus fruits, white flowers and honey, with a wonderfully fresh and velvety balance on the palate. The full and fresh fruit is joined by a fine hint of vanilla and cinnamon, and this white wine also has a discreet minerality and subtle spiciness that make it unique. The finish is long and harmonious. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant straw yellow with delicate golden reflections. Delicate flint, dried banana pieces and peach on the nose, reminiscent of salted lemon, slightly toasted. Hearty on the palate with great expression, well-integrated wood, clear, has a lovely freshness at the back, paired with light phenolics, very well done." Falstaff

“Brolio” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2020
Everything is just right here: Brolio Riserva is classic in its composition, in its ageing, in its overall impression from the label to the last sip. "Bright ruby red colour. Dark berries on the nose, fine, spicy notes with a blood orange aftertaste. Medium structure on the palate, polished, present tannins, fresh acidity, lingering finish." Falstaff
"This Chianti Classico is a savoury version with aromas of green olive, tomato leaf, iron and tobacco clustered around a core of macerated cherry fruit. Although lean and sinewy, it is also intense and focused, with a lingering aftertaste that feels the pull of both the savoury and fruity sides." Wine Spectator
"A firm and fresh Chianti Classico with a light to medium body, sour cherries, orange peel and hints of sandalwood. Crunchy finish." James Suckling
"The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio is a dark, brooding wine. Black cherry, licorice, sage, tobacco, incense and leather fill out the layers as this strapping Riserva shows off its imposing personality. This is nicely done." Vinous
"In the bottle with the black label, this is a very pretty, relatable and well-priced wine from Tuscany. Made with 100% Sangiovese, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio offers blueberry, plum and sweet spice thanks to 18 months of tonneaux aging. I especially appreciate the wine's pronounced mineral signature that gives the wine a salty or savory side, which is perfect for food pairing." Wine Advocate
"Its versatile aroma is reminiscent of redcurrants, Mediterranean maquis, peony and pepper leaf. Sip with powerful tannins, tension and juiciness, finish with a fruity-floral return." Luca Gardini

The flavour reveals precision, structure and freshness. The tannin and acidity are well-balanced and promise a long life and an interesting ageing period. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Barone Ricasoli 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio is one of the winery's most important and successful bottles. It is full-bodied and rich with warm, vintage flavours of blackberries, juicy cherries, spices and soft earth. It is aged for 22 months in tonneaux, of which only 30% is new oak, but this is more than enough to give this full-bodied Sangiovese spicy tones, soft tannins and a rich structure." Wine Advocate
"Complex bouquet of forest fruits, black pepper and tobacco; has flesh, fullness, skilfully balanced tannins and acidity, long finish. Convinces with its charismatic style." Vinum
"Castello di Brolio is the flagship of the winery and combines Sangiovese from higher-lying vineyards near the castle, planted on the three main soil types found here: Macigno (sandstone), Galestro and Alberese. This 2020 has a balsamic bouquet that is accompanied in the mouth by a rich concentration of flavoursome, tangy red and black fruits and wonderfully silky tannins. Structured enough to age well, but soft and approachable enough to enjoy immediately, it's a great all-rounder." Decanter
"Bright and floral on the nose, with orange blossom and vibrant sliced cherry character. Medium-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins that are supple and gentle. Beautiful aftertaste of cooked peach pie and cherry. Delicious now, but even better in 2028." James Suckling
"Pure Sangiovese from three vineyards around the castle, an expression of three different soils. Black cherry on the nose, with notes of eucalyptus and cinnamon. Spicy tannins on the palate, dense, persistent with a balsamic finish." Luca Gardini

“Sanbarnaba” Bianco Toscana IGT 2020
Here comes the debut vintage of a great white wine from a classic red wine region. In a small edition of less than 6,000 bottles, an elegant and at the same time very independent Trebbiano was created, which rightly bears the label based on the famous "Castello di Brolio" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The white Trebbiano grape variety has a tradition of over a hundred years at Brolio, and the grapes for this white cru come from a small 1.18-hectare plot in the company's own Tarci vineyard. According to tradition, a monument was erected here to San Barnaba, the protector of the vineyards from hail.
Its production is as special as the wine itself: it was matured in Tuscan cocciopesto amphorae, with the skins macerating for around three months. The wine was then aged for a year, 40% in amphorae, 30% in stainless steel tanks and 30% in second and third passage tonneaux.
Sanbarnaba surprises with its elegance and intensity. It has a golden yellow colour with amber reflections. On the nose, it opens with floral and fruity notes, followed by honey flavours, spice and herbs. It is soft and very harmonious on the palate. Its acidity and freshness with a fine mineral note accompany the extremely flavoursome experience right through to the long finish. Very exceptional! SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, light golden yellow colour. Notes of jasmine blossom, pear and some baked apple on the nose. Lots of taut acidity on the palate, gives tension and juiciness, salty, slightly phenolic notes on the final." Falstaff
"An attractive wine with notes of bruised apples, pear skin, savoury herbs, young walnuts and ripe cheese. Full and waxy, structured and rather fluid, but also interesting. Spicy and savoury with a delicate phenolic impression on the finish. 100% Trebbiano from 1.18 hectares of vineyard." James Suckling
"This is a wine that promises modest potential for cellaring, and thanks to its natural structure it could be paired with mature cheeses or even a plate of cacio e pep. The Barone Ricasoli 2020 Castello di Brolio Sanbarnaba is aged in a combination of amphorae, stainless steel and neutral oak. Only 5,600 bottles were produced. It opens with a medium golden colour and offers nutty aromas with mango, apricot and candied orange. It finishes on a glycerine-rich note. It should be interesting to taste this bottle again in five years' time." Wine Advocate

“Casalferro” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018
A study commissioned by Francesco Ricasoli showed that there are 19 different types of soils on Brolio. Thus, it was possible to precisely define the sites that are particularly good for Merlot, from which wines with a unique structure and unmistakable taste emerge. With the 2018 vintage, Francesco Ricasoli now presents the "new" Casalferro, whose grapes come from the three different vineyards Vigna Casalferro, Vigna Pecchierino and Vigna Sodacci. This has drastically reduced the production volume, but the result is impressive!
A Tuscan Merlot as it is written in the book. On the nose, multi-layered aromas of dark red fruits, delicate cedar wood, leather, very spicy. Initially taut and dense on the palate, it opens up as it progresses and spreads out in an impressive elegance. The play between bouquet and complexity on the palate is perfectly balanced and its impressive size is already unmistakable. This Merlot will have a great future. SUPERIORE.DE
"Pure-varietal Merlot from (for the first time) three selected vineyards particularly suited to the variety and a hit right from the premiere: complex nose with intriguing notes of blackcurrant, sandalwood, tobacco and pepper; harmony on the palate, increasing in richness and density with aeration, yet retaining elegance." Vinum
"Noble, bright ruby red. In the nose barrel-spicy and after noble woods, plum, blackberry, peppery-malty tones in the finish. Very fresh on the palate with crisp acidity without missing its body, tightens up nicely, polished and with lots of juice, keeps coming, put it away, will be a long distance runner." Falstaff
"The 2018 Casalferro, Brolio's (Merlot) is a powerful, brooding wine packed with dark-fleshed fruit, espresso, dried herbs menthol, licorice, incense and cloves. This juicy, flavorful red delivers plenty of impact, that much is pretty clear." Vinous
"Cool-climate fruit, sourced from various sites, including one that is located 500 meters above sea level, is the Casalferro secret. It delivers vertical power and intensity with dark fruit, spice and dried mint. This wine is drinking beautifully right now." Wine Advocate
"A very precise and beautiful merlot with violets, spices and blackcurrants. Extremely perfumed. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and a long, lustrous finish, showing finesse and complexity. Delicious to drink now, but will improve with age." James Suckling

"A rich, dark expression of Merlot, this red walks the line between austerity and generosity, the latter gaining ground as this builds to the fine finish. Dense, with the tight texture working in tandem with black cherry, blackberry, iron and spice flavors." Wine Spectator
"The Barone Ricasoli 2019 Casalferro flaunts its potential in a classic vintage. Made with all Merlot, the wine's DNA is shaped by the variety, but territory also plays a huge role in this presentation. You know you are drinking a wine from Tuscany thanks to a delicate flutter of aromas that includes wild cherry, purple fruits, violet and spice. This wine lends an Italian personality to a French grape." Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Casalferro is terrific. Ripe dark cherry/plum fruit, licorice, spice, new leather, menthol and mocha are nicely dialed up in a generous, plush Merlot that offers plenty of Chianti Classico vibrancy." Vinous
"Super aromas of fresh violets, black olives, crushed raspberries and blackberries. Hints of dried flowers, too. Full-bodied, yet compact and polished, with superbly crafted tannins that compress the palate, giving it a fine-velvet texture. Tight and focused. Most precise and sophisticated Casalferro ever. This needs at least three or four years to show what it has, but great potential. Best from 2026." James Suckling
"Produced for the first time not only with the best grapes from the vineyard of the same name, but also with contributions from the Pecchierino and Sodacci vineyards, this is a pure Merlot of stature, with intense aromas of blueberry, currant and balsamic herbs on the nose. The taste is elegant and spectacularly clean. Salty-savoury tannins, excellent drinkability." Luca Gardini

“Roncicone” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019
As a result of extensive soil research, Francesco Ricasoli was able to identify three microlocations, which will be vinified separately from the 2015 vintage onwards. The range of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione now includes, in addition to the famous Castello di Brolio, three cru sites (Colledilà, Roncicone and Ceniprimo), all of which are 100% planted with Sangiovese. They differ in structure and taste in close correspondence with their terroir and impressively demonstrate the complexity of the Chanti Classico region.
Cru Roncicone comes from soils with maritime deposits. It is a 10.1 hectare plot planted between 1998 and 2000 at a density of 6,000 plants per hectare. The soils are rich in marine fossils with sand at the top and thicker clay under the topsoil. Our impression of this wine is that it is the most immediately and softly structured.
Deep dark, fruity-smoky bouquet. On the palate then dark, violet fruits, paired with notes of forest floor, tobacco and a nice spiciness. The volume is full and deep, the tannins very accessible even at a young age and the finish is flanked by a well-structured acidity framework, which will also ensure a very good ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Roncicone shows the more ethereal side of Sangiovese in this vintage. Sweet red cherry, mint, crushed rocks, orange peel and rosewater lend notable aromatic brilliance. Deceptive in its mid-weight, translucent personality, the Roncicone delivers plenty of intensity." Vinous
"This spicy red is introduced with a blast of bright cherry fruit, along with strawberry, currant, eucalyptus and tobacco notes. Reveals an underlying mineral element, and dusty tannins present on the finish. All the components are there." Wine Spectator
"The aromas and structure to this single vineyard Chianti Classico are something else this year. The orange-peel, meat and cherry aromas are lifted and spirited. It’s medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins that are dusty and fine-grained. Structured and sturdy with a granite-like presence. Try after 2025, but impressive to taste." James Suckling
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio Roncicone reflects soils that are rich in shells and marine fossils. These conditions deliver sharpness and focus with beautiful minerality, both salty and chalky. To the eye, this textbook Sangiovese is lean and elegant. The bouquet is finessed and layered with wild cherry, mint, blue flower and blood orange. There is an element of rustiness as well, and the mouthfeel is polished and extremely fine. The tannins melt away. Francesco Ricasoli assures me that he and his team "have learned to work the grape." I'd certainly say so. These are stunning results." Wine Advocate

Everything is just right here: Brolio Riserva is classic in its composition, in its ageing, in its entire impression from the label to the last sip. Velvety, dense ruby, dense nose with rich fruit, especially blackberry, some elderberry and a nice herbal spiciness. Supple on the palate, the course is polished with fine-grained tannin and a long-lasting final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Varied aromas of small wild berries, Mediterranean scrub and spices; the attack is juicy, the acidity invigorates and prepares a nice transition into the pleasantly fruity finish." Vinum
"Bright ruby red with a slightly lightening rim. In the nose of ripe sour cherry and rich plum, in the aftertaste some leather and black truffle. On the palate with well-integrated tannin, lots of red fruit, with traction, fun, long final." Falstaff
"Youthful ruby. Fresh cherry with a soft oak note. Supple, round, accessible sweet cherry fruit with lots of acidity on the palate. Sweet oak and succulent fruit on the finish. I am sure this will make lots of friends." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio is packed with dark cherry fruit, plum, mocha, chocolate, sweet oak, leather and spice. This racy, overt Riserva is on the flamboyant side, but all the elements are nicely melded together." Vinous
"Spicy nose of nutmeg, paprika, pine cones, cherries and iodine. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins. Compact and focused. Stones and lemons at the end." James Suckling
"Well-marked by new oak, offering cherry, plum, iron and spice aromas and flavors, this red is concentrated and vibrant. Delivers dense and interwoven tannins, with a lingering aftertaste echoing cherry, mineral and spice." Wine Spectator
"Intense notes of sour cherry and vanilla, then violet and blood orange. The palate opens with juicy tannins with subtle leathery flavours and sour cherries, followed by a very long blood-orange aftertaste. Beautifully textured with a well-padded palate and a polished structural frame. A wonderful wine." Decanter
"Oak aging plays a larger role in shaping the intensity and texture of the Barone Ricasoli 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio. You can count on a solid 10-year aging window for this wine. Made with all Sangiovese, the wine is balanced and especially bright with dark fruit, spice and cured tobacco. It offers soft tannins, ample volume and lingering hints of toast and spice. This is another terrific value." Wine Advocate

“CeniPrimo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2020
As a result of extensive soil research, Francesco Ricasoli was able to identify three micro-vineyards, which will be vinified separately from the 2015 vintage onwards.
CeniPrimo is a single-varietal Sangiovese from soils shaped by a former river course. It is a 6.4 hectare site planted in 1998 with southwest exposure. This site is in a valley on the Arbia River, and the soils are very complex at this point with alluvium and clay that is low in organic matter and lower in limestone. From our tasting, it seems to be the most nuanced and diverse of the three single vineyard Gran Selezione.
Intense, fresh and bright bouquet of violets and wild spicy notes. In the drink, an elegant acidity and fine mineral slate traces. Cherry, blackberry, plum, white pepper and a little rosemary lead the perfectly structured drop into a never-ending and multi-layered finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"A complex, concentrated red wine with seductive aromas of cherries, blackcurrants, violets, minerals and spices. Dry and powerful, with a firm, mineral finish. It shows good balance and a long-lasting aftertaste, combining the fruity, mineral and spicy elements." Wine Spectator
"Straightforward fruit and floral aromas, then subtle spice too; the tannins powdery, well underpinned by the acidity, the finish on notes of sun-ripened berries. Pleases with its verve." Vinum
"The CeniPrimo, the lowest of Ricasoli's three crus, comes from a site 300 metres above sea level in the Arbia Valley on river soils. As a result, it is darker and earthier compared to the other two crus, grippier and also with an amazing acidity. There is a hint of creaminess in the background, with notes of earth, pepper and wood. It's very tasty and vertical, with balsamic freshness and beautiful purity, but definitely needs more time to show its best side." Decanter
"The Barone Ricasoli 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio CeniPrimo opens with a medium-dark, saturated appearance and a slightly more concentrated feel, with aromas of cherry liqueur, blackberries, spices and sweet earth. Thanks to the lower-lying vineyards and silty riverbed soils, this wine is a little fruitier and richer in texture. However, this wine also offers a touch of lively freshness on the finish, and that makes a big difference in a warm vintage like this. It remains very balanced throughout." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of firm-to-the-bite cherries with citrus peel. Flowers, like red roses, also come through clearly. Medium to full body, with open-grained tannins that cling like cashmere. Powerful, fresh and lively. Give this wine three to five years to develop." James Suckling

They differ in structure and taste in close correspondence with their terroir and impressively demonstrate the complexity of the Chanti Classico region.
The grapes of Colledilà come from the soils of Monte Morello. The 7.6 hectare single-vineyard plot was planted in 2002 on very rocky soils rich in calcium, clay and organic matter. These characteristics give this wine its sharpness and concentration, promising long ageing in the cellar.
Ripe, dark cherry fruit and blackberry aromas, followed by tar, liquorice and potting soil. On the palate, a fine earthiness, cherry and plum, plus finely knit and slightly sweet tannins. The dense fruit and pleasant acid wire the Sangiovese provide the necessary freshness. Masterfully composed! SUPERIORE.DE
"Like a laser beam in profile, this red wine evokes aromas and flavours of cherries, currants, minerals, wild herbs and sweet spices. The lingering, incisive finish leaves a hint of fine tannins. Needs time." Wine Spectator
"Juicy, ripe and bright, it shows a delicious freshness of blackcurrant fruit with classic chalky verticality and length, but it needs more time to reveal all its complexity." Decanter
"Of these 2020 releases, I think the Barone Ricasoli 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colledilà is the most sensitive to the warm growing season. You sense more fruit ripeness in this wine with savoury spices, leather and roasted espresso beans. There is plenty of plum and purple fruit framed by gravel and campfire ash. Indeed, this 2020 expression offers a nice, balanced freshness in terms of mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"Intense perfume of stone fruit, dark chocolate and tobacco; tightly woven, the tannins polished and in perfect unison with the well-integrated acidity, the finish on notes of black cherries, clear and spot-on. Also very successful in this vintage." Vinum
"Very perfumed with aromas of hibiscus flowers, citrus and fresh cherries leading to a medium body with layers of fruit and very fine tannins that go on and on. Fully integrated. A joy to taste and drink, but it will develop beautifully in bottle. Pure harmony." James Suckling
"Elegantly bright ruby red with a delicate garnet rim. Expressive nose, of rose hips, blood oranges, fresh cherries, very inviting and fragrant, red peach, with delicate floral components. Very juicy entry on the palate, polished and clear, with great brought out red fruit, plus bright spice, long and very elegant." Falstaff

"The Roncicone, first released in the 2015 vintage, comes from a vineyard with richer soils with marine sediments and large pebbles. It is the most floral and fragrant of Ricasoli's three crus, intense and fleshy, with good spice of black and red cherries, spices and balsamic, finishing with sweet, floral red fruits - a very nice style." Decanter
"The spicy nose is reminiscent of a soothing café, with notes of balsamic vinegar and herbs, and a gentle fruitiness that lingers over the smell of the beans. The velvety texture on the palate is balanced by a sharp acidity and a peppery kick on the finish." Wine Enthusiast
"Offers aromas and flavours of cherry, blackcurrant and plum, underlined by iron and mineral notes. Accents of tobacco and wild herbs emerge on the long, delicious finish. Excellent balance." Wine Spectator
"Ripe and rich Roncicone with plums, currants and jam accompanied by fresh flowers and walnut undertones. Full-bodied, a little chewy and structured, but crisp with fine tannins. Long lasting finish. Needs at least two or three years to develop." James Suckling
"Exquisite bouquet of stone fruit and sandalwood, spiced up by fine spice; harmonious tannin-acid framework, pressure on the finish and yet full of elegance." Vinum
"This is the wine that blew me away last year (when I tasted the excellent 2019 vintage) and convinced me of the innovative work Barone Ricasoli is currently doing. Today, tasting the 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio Roncicone, I am reminded of the quality fruit that comes from this particular 10-acre site with marine fossils in the sandy topsoil. Carefully aged in oak, this Sangiovese shows brilliant clarity and focus, with aromas of roses, dried cherries, campfire ash and delicate mineral notes. This wine paints a beautiful portrait of this grape variety." Wine Advocate

Although lean and sinewy, it is also intense and focused, with a lingering aftertaste that feels the pull of both the savoury and fruity sides." Wine Spectator

“Castello di Brolio” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019 · MAGNUM in OWC
Ricasoli's classic is now made from 100% Sangiovese. The grapes come from a south-facing plot at an ideal altitude of 250 to 450 metres above sea level. Castello di Brolio Gran Selezione is a beautiful wine with great richness and depth. The bouquet intense of small red berries, violets and spices. On the palate you can feel the precision, structure and freshness. The tannin and acid structure is well proportioned and promises a long life and an interesting ageing period. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with a sparkling core. In the nose of pomegranate, blood oranges, some incense, then again rich cherries, noble wood. Very clear and very juicy on the palate, opens on fine orange tones, pithy, light-footed tannin, seems very purposeful and finesse-rich, great length." Falstaff
"Polished and balanced, this red offers cherry, plum, floral, iron and tobacco flavors, with a kiss of vanilla. Focused, exhibiting a dense line of tannins, yet this is balanced and complex. Youthful, so be patient." Wine Spectator
"The Barone Ricasoli 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio represent a new chapter in the history of this popular wine. The wine is 100% Sangiovese selected from various parcels. There has been a shift to fruit from higher elevations and cooler growing conditions. The three main soil types - sandstone, schistous galestro and limestone alberese - are all faithfully represented here. This wine is streamlined and elegant, and its freshness is superb. That crisp and tart character of Gaiole comes through clearly, along with polished mineral, clover, spice and forest fruit." Wine Advocate
"A polished and reserved Castello with cherry, orange-peel and chocolate aromas and flavors. Tight and round-tannined, in a very subtle and curated way. The precision in this wine is impressive. Needs time to open." James Suckling

The family estate Castello di Brolio sits peacefully on a picturesque hill in the Chianti mountains - surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and cypresses. It was at this magnificent location in the municipality of Gaiole that Baron Bettino Ricasoli first determined in the late 1860s which grape varieties a Chianti could contain.
The most famous wine of the house - Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio - is made from 100% Sangiovese and aged for 23 months in barriques. Other premium wines include the single-varietal Merlot Casalferro and the three single-varietal Sangiovese Colledilà, CeniPrimo and Roncicone, vinified as single-varietals, all of which are in the top Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category. They are the result of a development that began back in 1993: At that time, Francesco Barone Ricasoli took over the winery. He immediately launched an ambitious quality offensive: New vineyards were planted, and a scientifically underpinned programme for selecting and propagating the best old Sangiovese clones was set in motion. The youngest scion of the famous noble family also analysed the individual sites - a total of around 240 hectares of vineyards on 1,200 hectares of land - in order to better understand the characteristics of the vineyards and the influence of the soil on the wine and to be able to avoid mistakes on the way from the grape to the bottle. Oenologist oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who knows Chianti and its wines inside out, has also played a big part in Ricasoli 1141's qualitative soaring. SUPERIORE.DE
"The history of the Ricasoli estate is inseparably linked with that of Chianti Classico. Even today, the winery is considered a model winery in the growing region." Gambero Rosso
"Exciting work is underway at Barone Ricasoli to study and map the soil conditions on the Brolio property. To commemorate these efforts, the winery now has three single-vineyard Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines, two of which debuted in 2019. Francesco Ricasoli and his team have identified 19 different soil types in their planning. The five main soils are Macigno del Chianti (well-draining sand and rocks called arenarie), Scaglia Toscana (or shale-based Galestro), Monte Morello (also known as Alberese limestone with calcareous claystone), Marine Depots (with Pliocene marine sediments and sandy deposits) and finally Ancient Fluvial Terrace (or poorly structured silty deposits with clay). The three new wines represent the last three soil types in this list.
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colledilà represents the Monte Morello soils. The 7.6 hectare single vineyard plot was planted in 2002 on very rocky soils rich in calcium, clay and organic matter. These characteristics give this wine its sharpness and concentration, promising long ageing in the cellar.
The second wine is the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Roncicone, which represents the soils of the marine deposits. It is a 10.1 hectare plot planted between 1998 and 2000 at a density of 6,000 plants per hectare. The soils are rich in marine fossils with sand at the top and thicker clay under the topsoil. My impression of this wine is that it is the most immediate and softly structured.
The third wine, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione CeniPrimo, represents the old river terrace. CeniPrimo is a 6.4 hectare site planted in 1998 with southwest exposure. This site is located in a valley on the Arbia River, and the soils are very complex at this site with alluvium and clay that is low in organic matter and lower in limestone. To my palate, this expression was the most nuanced and diverse. I would expect this wine to evolve slowly and go through many different incarnations over the years." Monica Larner (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate)
