      “Ornellaia” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017

Dense and dark with a bright ruby red edge. In the bouquet liquorice, roasted cereals, vanilla and black berries. In the drink the tight tannin structure paired with fine fruit sweetness and very harmonious acid wire is impressive. SUPERIORE.DE

"Ornellaia 2017 interprets the particularly warm and sunny year masterfully. The intense and dark colour heralds a wine of beautiful concentration. Rich and complex on the nose, it releases aromas of ripe berry fruits, accompanied by notes of sweet tobacco and vanilla. The palate reveals an Ornellaia of great balance, a combination of persistence and pleasant freshness". Olga Fusari (Kellermeisterin Ornellaia)

"2017 can only be described as an extreme vintage in which sun and heat played a decisive role. That's why I decided to name the character of Ornellaia 2017 "Radiant". The wine is dominated by notes of dark berries and liquorice, underpinned by velvety tannins typical of hot vintages. At the same time, excellent smoothness and acidity give the wine a splendid Mediterranean character". Axel Heinz (Direktor Ornellaia)

"Coming from one of the hottest vintages, this vintage shows a deep dark colour. In the nose with dark fruits like cassis and also blackberry. Somewhat smoky. Presents itself on the palate with tart and still present tannins. The tart notes are carried by a fresh and demanding acidity with juicy, strong black cherry fruit. Long finish." Vinum

"Though well-oaked, this features ample black cherry, plum and loam flavors to match the vanilla and sweet spice elements. Harmonious and accessible at this young stage, but will be better in a few years once the components harmonize. Vibrant and long." Wine Spectator

"A big, rich wine for the vintage, yet poised and lively with firm, chewy tannins that give form and intensity to the wine. It shows loads of blackberry, blackcurrant and walnut flavors. Ripe yet polished tannins. Give this three or four years to come together." James Suckling

"This vintage of Ornellaia is called Solare and represents the 12th edition in the estate's Vendemmia d'Artista series featuring artwork by Tomás Saraceno. His beautiful art depicts a radiant sun halo and is intended as a symbol of sustainability. That theme of sunshine and warmth is particularly well suited to a vintage such as this. The Ornellaia 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is generous and fruit-forward with dense richness and concentration all driven by the smaller and more compact berry size that characterizes this dry, hot growing season. Black and purple fruits segue to spice, tobacco, leather and some of those beautiful Mediterranean notes of black olive and wild sage. These various moving pieces work together in perfect harmony. The tannins are beautifully managed here. If you consider the more astringent and rougher approach of the mid-tier Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, this wine shows a whole other level of magnificent tannic management that could not have been easy given the diminutive berry size. This vintage sees a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 9% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard soils are characterized by reddish sand with calcareous rock. The wine is fermented in both stainless steel and cement and is transferred over to barrique to finish malolactic fermentation." Robert Parker

"A stunning wine, the 2017 Ornellaia offers a captivating interplay of richness and energy. Picking early was the key. Young vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc were harvested in August for the first time ever. In the glass, the 2017 offers up an enticing mélange of mocha, cedar, tobacco and licorice, with soft curves that add to its sensuality and allure. The 2017 is sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tend to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone. In a word: superb!" Vinous

“Ornellaia” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017 · artist label “Solare” Vendemmia d’Artista

We are pleased to be able to offer some of the strictly limited special edition "Solare" each year as a single bottle! For the interpretation of the character "Solare" (radiant) of the 2017 Ornellaia vintage, the decision was made in favour of the visionary artist Tomás Saraceno, who is internationally renowned for his interactive installations. Ornellaia and the artist share a common philosophy of sustainability: only an intact ecosystem can produce an authentic expression of the terroir. With minimal intervention, the vines are stimulated to the point where they can activate their spontaneous, natural self-regulating powers. Inspired by the radiant character of Ornellaia 2017, Tomàs Saraceno looks at the connection between the sun and the earth and invites us to take a more careful approach and a new attention to the most important source of energy on our planet.

    • "Ornellaia" Bianco Toscana IGT 2017

      “Ornellaia” Bianco Toscana IGT 2017

Ornellaia Bianco is a cuvée of mainly Sauvignon Bianco from three selected small vineyards of the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. It ferments on the yeast for 12 months, which gives it freshness, precision and a fine citrus note. Delicate golden yellow. In the nose a cornucopia of light fruit, with a wonderful mint and citrus note. On the palate complex, rich and multi-layered. One of the great white wines of Italy, completely in the style of the house. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Ornellaia Bianco is impressive, especially within the context of the warm, dry year. Bright and focused, the Bianco shows the natural richness of the vintage - that is impossible to escape - but it also retains quite a bit of energy. Orchard fruit, citrus and floral notes are beautifully delineated throughout. Once again, the Bianco is a wine of real distinction." Vinous

"The previous vintage of this wine was made soley with Sauvignon Blanc, but as expected, the Ornellaia 2017 Ornellaia Bianco sees a small percentage of Viognier added to the blend. The exact percentage of the two components is 91% Sauvignon Blanc and 9% Viognier. If you are a fan of these grape varieties, as I am, this wine will appeal to all your basic pleasure points. Showing medium rich concentration and a creamy textural fiber, it reveals some of the weight that we associated with this hot and dry vintage. However, any trace of over-ripeness is mitigated by the cool soils that, in this case, consist of deep calcarious clay broken up by rocks at a breezy 80 to 100 meters above sea level. This consistency is perfect for locking in moisture even in drought vintages. The wine is fermented in oak, but no malolactic fermentation occurs, and the wine instead rests on the fine lees with frequent stirring. Orchard fruits and Cavaillon melon give the wine a sturdy center of gravity." Robert Parker

"A really beautiful, layered white with sliced lemons, limes, stones and hints of steel. Some lemon curd. Tight and solid with fine phenolics that give it structure and focus. Extremely poised and dignified." James Suckling

“Le Volte” Rosso Toscana IGT 2017 · METHUSALEM 6 Liters in OWC

Fruity bouquet of sweet red berries, balsamic notes, fine aromas of tobacco and chocolate. On the palate very harmonious of dark cherries, flattering full taste, perfectly balanced tannins, fresh acidity and good length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Le Volte dell'Ornellaia 2017" is the result of a particularly hot and rainy vintage year and presents itself in its usual intense ruby red colour. In the nose, pleasant aromas of ripe berry fruits and spice notes captivate, supported on the palate by a crisp acidity and a balanced and velvety tannin structure". Olga Fusari (Winemaker Ornellaia)

"Sparkling ruby violet. Clear and present nose, fine fruit, of cherry and blackberry. Tannins on the palate, ripe plums, good pressure on the final. Falstaff

"An opulent Le Volte with ripe redcurrants, caramelized orange peel and lilacs on the nose. Medium body, fine but round tannins and a fruit-driven finish." James Suckling

"Lots of big, dark fruit and a lack of water in the grapes define the unique personality of the 2017 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia. This is a highly extracted and succulent expression that delivers abundant fruit sweetness. The key to this vintage was waiting for proper ripeness, says estate manager and winemaker Axel Heinz. "The grapes continued to get smaller throughout the summer," he says. That lack of water resulted in very concentrated fruit, giving this entry-level wine a rich and modern feel as a result." “Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia” Bolgheri DOC 2018 · Double-MAGNUM in OWC

Bewitching scent of sweet, dark berries with a hint of cassis, cedar wood and antique leather. Very well balanced and elegant on the palate, of beautiful viscosity with an elegant enamel. Fine-meshed tannin, restrained mineral tones and a wonderfully fresh and polished fruit accompany a remarkable finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shining, rich garnet. In the nose noble but reserved, a touch of mint, ripe wild berries. On the palate then extremely polished, excellent wood use, with pressure, tightly woven, spreads elegantly, powerful, long and compact." Falstaff

"Really beautiful second wine from Ornellaia with blackcurrant and blueberry aromas and flavors. Full body and round, soft tannins that caress the palate." James Suckling

    About the winemakers
    Tenuta dell' Ornellaia
    Tuscany | Bolgheri
    Tenuta dell' Ornellaia

It is a model for viticulture in Italy, especially in Tuscany, and a brand that does not have to fear comparison with the largest wine houses in the world. We are talking about the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. The importance of this picturesquely situated winery in Bolgheri has been growing for years. The house's wines were a safer investment than gold between 2007 and 2013. Moreover, price fluctuations were comparatively low. This has an investigation by the auction house Sotheby's and Liv-Ex, an international wine exchange in London. The exceptional Tuscan estate was founded in 1981 by Lodovico Antinori. Mondavi later took over the majority of the capital. Today the company belongs to the Florentine Frescobaldi family. The products of the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia are enjoyed in 60 countries around the world, with an export quota of around 30 percent. The deliveries go to prestigious customers and important collectors. Demand regularly far exceeds bottle production.

The vineyards of this imaginative family-run business stretch partly along Via Bolgherese and in Bellaria, northwest of Bolgheri. The almost perfect winery relies on classic Bordeaux varieties in its plots. Depending on the subzone, the soils are of alluvial, volcanic or marine origin. The proximity of the sea and the protection provided by the neighbouring hills favour a microclimate in which the grapes can ripen perfectly. Gentle sea breezes soften the summer heat, in winter the hills protect against icy winds.

The elite wines of the Tenuta dell, blessed with expert staff'Ornellaia are flawless in their modern style and technique. They reflect the character of the terroir and the great skills of their producers. The grapes from each vineyard are fermented separately, as each base wine must express the different facets of its parcel of origin - the soil, the sunlight and the grape variety. Only after one year of barrel ripening are the wines „wedded“. Even in difficult years remarkable drops succeed in the good.

The prestigious winery not only produces wines of the highest quality, but also attaches great importance to culture. In 2009, for example, the Vendemmia d’Artista from the baptism lifted. Its aim is to revive the tradition of Renaissance patronage of the arts and to place it in a contemporary context each year with a strictly limited edition (large formats only). SUPERIORE.DE

"The Ornellaia is an immensely lavish wine with a wonderful depth of taste. The Masseto is usually more massive and powerful. Both are among the best (and most expensive) red wines in Italy. Even the second set, Le Serre Nuove and Le Volte, are delicious." The Great Johnson

"The Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is 91 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (43 ha), Merlot (33 ha), Cabernet Franc (7 ha) and Petit Verdot (8 ha). At the moment only 76 hectares are in production: 30 hectares in the original vineyard, a further 46 hectares in the Bellaria vineyard just behind the end of Bolgheri, which has belonged to Tenuta since 1993. A revealing vertical sample of 10 Ornellaia vintages – presented by Leonardo Raspini, the director of the winery, in Zurich – showed that the quality of Ornellaia has improved markedly over the last few years thanks to the ageing of the vines, more rigorous restrictions on quantities and the introduction of a second wine. It could also be stated that the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia succeeds in producing remarkable wines even in difficult years."Weinwisser
